Why? We don't need Bitcoin to be quantum proof for now because there's no actual quantum computer in our age. Google claiming that they have quantum supremacy doesn't mean anything to Bitcoin. They might have the fastest computing computer but it still will won't affect the security of Bitcoin.

Well they have to break up Bitcoin's 256-bit ECDSA before Bitcoin developers mitigate the risk and upgrade it to make quantum resistant.

I'm not expert in this field, but I would advise everyone to read this thread, I don't believe Quantum Computing will ever threaten Bitcoin.

in my opinion quantum computers will be a threat to blockchain or bitcoin technology because basically blockchain is only protected by public key cryptography, which is very easily solved by quantum supremacy.
and it is possible that in the future blockchain technology will have to adapt and transform with the supremacy of quantum computers.

Isn't the gist of making it quantum-proof, requiring a lot longer private keys and therefore much higher encryption. I'm assuming that the developers would all need to re-create bitcoin and possibly open up some previously closed holes for such things to happen.

We are likely going to see more issues with the supply of BTC running out before we actually see quantum technology being developed to a useful state, I think Google's inaccurate showcase of "quantum computing" is prompting a lot of panic, which is pretty useless to be honest.

it was said that quantum can only break and possibly hack an address that had been used once since its public key is already known in the record. but if the address hasn't been used even once, then  its safe to assume its not going  to be affected. but this  isn't even 100% sure yet so possibly just a softfork.

quantum isn't real yet so maybe it would take another decade before it could happen. we'll never knew. it may be use to once again bring the price down so the institutions can get more btc for cheaper price. quantum  is probably just for  fud.

That's right as of now. But think ahead. Quantum computing would possibly be the next thing. Prevention is better than cure as they say, and while it may seem quantum computing is still not a thing, researchers of cryptography should start thinking of methodologies and algorithms that would be considered quantum-proof. Because if not, then once quantum computer get a hold of the required computational power, time is shorter to protect the network.

Doing some upgrades or otherwise..   Huh
Bitcoin is designed in such a way that it can be upgraded in both the signing algorithm and the hashing algorithm. Quantum computing or not, at some point we will need to change algorithms for one reason or another. Bitcoin could be hard forked but would no longer be backwards compatible with previous versions so I suspect a soft fork from ECDSA and SHA-256 would happen while changing the difficulty rules of SHA-256 at the same time.

Yes,,, people are making a huge fuss about something that does not even exist. If a quantum computer somehow for some reason breaks bitcoin,,, that will be the day they will use it to break something else. 1000s of other things more sensitive than Bitcoin have weaker security. Try hacking bank databases. Probably do not even need quantum for that!

As of the moment the google sycamore processor that they claim to be quantum supremacy today but only has 54-qubits which is far from what the minimum requirement qubits for cryptography's breaking point. But with bitcoin to upgrade to make quantum resistant, we must first who will be doing it ?

I'm not expert in this field, but I would advise everyone to read this thread, I don't believe Quantum Computing will ever threaten Bitcoin.
Quantum technology is just opened recently, so it means it is on its early stages and these tech companies will be going to improve more and more. For now quantum computing is not a risk for cryptography, however it is possible to become eventually.

Make Bitcoin 'QUANTUM PROOF'!

That is possible, Bitcoin developers have already post quantum solutions.
But there are lots of 'shalecoins', https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5134441.0 coins with no owner. With quantum computers, even with a quantum resistant blockchain, these coins will become active and change the Bitcoin ecosystem.

This! Bitcoin is much "quantumproofer" than any old bank IT - network - database - server - security - ... whatever.

Well they have to break up Bitcoin's 256-bit ECDSA before Bitcoin developers mitigate the risk and upgrade it to make quantum resistant.

It would be foolish to wait until ECDSA is actually broken. Due to current practices like key reuse and xpub usage, quantum computers breaking ECDSA would leave at least 5 million bitcoins on the table, ready to be stolen. As Pieter Wuille points out -- correctly, I believe -- Bitcoin would have no value at that point.

Quantum resistance needs to be implemented long before the threat is real. The problem is that all known post-quantum signature schemes will massively bloat the blockchain, so timing these changes won't be easy.

In my opinion, we don't need an upgrade, the Blockchain technology is good as it is and it is not yet feasible or has any assurance that if someone had a quantum computer they will able to break the security of Bitcoin but let me say that Bitcoin is still advance and can sure be good on its own, maybe some developers would like to upgrade into quantum ones lets just wait for the upcoming halving if this can be possible maybe they will create a Bitcoin Quantum that is advance to Bitcoin but I doubt that is possible.

We think that the developers had made huge gains in that area and that they - large enough for any calculation - already exist. But the digital world is not prepared for quantum computing so they are introducing it step by step - like Google's sycamore - to have a smooth change to post quantum computing.
