This thread caught me by surprise. I haven't setup a headless rig yet but I'm
thinking about it.

Is this really a mobo issue? I thought it was a software/driver issue.
These mobos are for AMD CPUs, most mining-suitable AMD CPUs have no IGPU.

With no IGPU in the way what doesn't the mobo have to do with it?

Right now I'm more interested in using both the IGPU and adddon GPUs at the same time
with the monitor connected to the IGPU. I believe that requires BIOS support.

Well, It is actually a compatibility issue.
If the AM4 motherboard doesn't have the updated bios which can boot the system even without any eGPU or iGPU then headless rig can be achieved.

As Ryzen doesn't have iGPU, it is not possible to configure the system without an external GPU but once all the configuration and startup scripts are configured to execute accordingly for the purpose it is built for, then one can easily remove the connected GPU and use it as a headless rig.

Here are some threads where people used Ryzen CPU and the system as a headless rig for their home servers. As one has quoted, any watt saving counts so a headless rig is a way to go for it.

Myself i have only the asus b350-f gaming/ b450 f-gaming ..  They all worked out of the box for me. Ofcourse need initial setup with  a graphics card and install miners, some kind of remote desktop like  teamviewer or what not.

I have also tried runnning headless on a Msi x370 sli plus and it seems like a common problem with msi motherboards that they just show up "gpu error"  on the leds on motherboard.. So they dosent get passed the post when taking off the gpu.

Asrock and Asus dont seem to have a problem with this, found alot of guys that  got diffrent asrock am4 motherboards to boot up.

I am thinking of running 1 or 2 gpus and the 3900x.  I have a power deal that will make them earn profit.

setups  would be

1x 3900x
1x vega 56

1x 3900x
1x vega 56

1x 3900x
1x vega 56

1x 3700x
1x vega 56

I would run these  and contact via team viewer.  they  would earn about 1.50 usd in coin x 4 = 6 usd a day.

I would keep 3 usd. I don't need to run headless.

Update:   So MSI are in upcoming bios release for am4 boards making the headless mode work in all of their lineups from a320  to x570.

With MSI bios flashback button on the B450 boards and up this will be pretty amazing.
