I do not think that it would be right to highlight individual members for this. If you find some post by a member to be against the rules, you can always report it. The merit whores have some common characteristics though that can be used to identify them like they just rewrite the top merited posts, try to post attention seeking threads in meta and so on. Howerver, the merit sources have got used to all this and can identify them from so far.

So imho while Merit is useful, Karma is not.

@NeuroticFish Depends on how you define the word "Useful". Having a higher amount of Karma allows you to post on certain subreddits, they are basically "sub-boards". On more popular subreddits like "r/videos" newbies can't post/share a link. Since these subreddits receive millions of impressions every day. Having a top post on one of these Subreddits can be quite beneficial if we are talking from a monetary perspective. There are special subreddits that you can only join when you receive X amount Karma. I remember a board for only "Merit-earners" was proposed here as well but I think it never became a reality.

An analogy I could find is the Ivory Tower, just I guess it's not so "important" as r/videos. I will correct my post.

Indeed maybe there are some flaws or whatever, but merit discourage a lot of members to create new account and spam all over the place with useless posts.

There is merit in the merit system.

Also those that completely don't care about ranking up or sigh campaign etc those members can still talk free, ask questions and have non problems from anything.... only those with some wrong intentions have a few more problems cause of the system...

Indeed, merit has more than one use - money/bounties as it maybe could be understood from my post.
I just tried to find one of the uses of Merit and actually the use case for which people are trying all the "tricks" OP was disgusted about.

No, that's not how comment karma works. In order to get comment karma, your comments have to be upvoted by others, you don't get it by simply commenting. So those that write nonsense get nothing at best, and they can even be downvoted and loose karma.

Karma is used as a relative measure of activity which is why subreddits have metrics of minimum karma to participate. Bitcointalk already has an activity metric. I don't see a point to merit at all other than bragging rights.

You can be very active shitposter on reddit, and you probably won't receive much karma, therefore preventing you from joining most popular subreddits. It is similar with bitcointalk, you can be very active shitposter here and you will gain activity, but you will never reach higher ranks and some benefits that it offers.

So i would say that both reddit karma  and bitcointalk merit  have its purpose.

Is there a "karma whores" list on reddit!? Do you have a link to it?
If you believe someone is cheating or abusing the merit system then you can leave a negative feedback on his trust page. This is how we are supposed to deal with merit abusers.
With all the drama going on here, "merit whores" list is the last thing we need.
