I got the Ledger Nano S Wallet but I have NO IDEA how to Set Up my Hardware Wallet with Electrum which is what I'd much rather prefer to do than Set it Up with a totally new and entirely different Bitcoin Wallet that is Hardware Compatible.

Keep in mind I have no idea how the Ledger Nano S is supposed to work but what I understand it needs a Bitcoin Wallet of some type to start getting it to work. Or does the Ledger Nano S come with it's own Bitcoin Wallet in the Software as I only just literally got it out of the Package and have Written down the Back Up Phrase and have my Wallet "Set Up" or at least I think/hope it is all set up, working and ready to go.

I would be extremely grateful for anyone that can provide assistance... even though I gave another User Account my very first and only Reputation Point.

It has app called ledger live. You need to download it and install it to get started. But I think before that you will need to configure your ledger device. All the instructions are in their support page.

You can also use it with electrum and same again, the instructions will be in their support page. It's not much complected. By the way you made a good decision to have a hardware wallet for your crypto.

PS; Always make sure you have backed up your passphrase and the pin number you will use. Never use any passphrase which is given by anyone not even the seller who sent you the device. You have to be the only one who know the passphrase.

Edit: if I am not wrong then here is the page where you will get necessary information: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002481534-Check-if-device-is-genuine

The ledger support link above got almost all the info you need, for example,
How to set-up Leger with Electrum: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005161925-Set-up-and-use-Electrum
How to setup Ledger live: Download and install Ledger Live | Take your first steps

For the basic guides, click "Ledger Nano S", "Getting started", then read all of the contents of the drop-down list,
check if you correctly followed "Set up as new device".

But I can't completely comprehend the title/1st sentence, what do you mean by "replaced Electrum"?
Do you want to restore your seed from old Ledger? Then read: Restore from recovery phrase

I think he was trying to say that he got the Ledger device to replace his Electrum wallet, meaning he no longer wants to use Electrum to store his Bitcoin and wants to replace Electrum with Ledger.

@Thomas29
Since you are new with hardware wallets you need to be absolutely certain that the seed you wrote down is 100% correct. No misspelling or misplacement of words.
Download Ledger Live from the official website and ONLY from the official website. Your seed words should never be entered into a software or online. Ledger Live will never ask you to enter your seed words. If it does it is a phishing software and not the official Ledger software. Your seed words are only presented to you on the screen of your Nano S.
Once Ledger Live is downloaded and installed you click on Device Manager and install the Bitcoin wallet. Your Nano S needs to be connected and unlocked to access the Device Manager and install apps.
After that you can create your wallet and the type. Click on Receive and Ledger Live will generate a new receiving address. That is the address of your newly created wallet.

It's just called "Manager" within the Ledger Live software... not to be confused with Windows "Device Manager" Wink

More correctly, that is one address in your newly created wallet... Ledger Nano S uses HD wallets, so you'll get multiple different addresses... once an address is "used" (ie. it has received funds), Ledger Live will give you a new, unused address the next time you click on "receive".

Alternatively, if the OP wants to continue to use Electrum as their interface... just use "File -> New/Restore -> Standard Wallet -> Use a hardware device" in Electrum and then follow the prompts:

This will allow you to combine the safety/security of the Ledger device with the features (and familiar UI) of Electrum. Wink

Yes, of course. I am aware of that I just didn't want to confuse the OP with too much information. Ledger Live gives you one new receiving address. If that address doesn't receive any Bitcoins and you request another one, Ledger will still show you the first address again since it has not been funded.

Good point on the Device Manager part of my post, no idea how I put that it there.  Wink

It won't work on my computer because I got Windows 7 and it requires Windows 8 or higher/newer. I borrowed my friend's laptop with Windows 10 on it until I can get Windows 10 on my computer.

Would it be better to use the Ledger Nano S Wallet that it comes with? Or would it be better to use the Ledger Nano S with Electrum Wallet since that's what I'm used to using? I've finally have learned how to use the Electrum Wallet properly and easily... I probably should mention I am fairly new to using Bitcoin in general.

Will you use it exclusively for Bitcoin?
If yes, you can stick with Electrum; otherwise, install both for different purposes.
Ledger Live for multi-currency management and transactions.
Electrum for Bitcoin transactions with extra features like freezing addresses & UTXO.

Ledger is stopped with support for Windows 7 some time ago, which means that Ledger Live is not working on W7, but you can still use Nano S+Electrum on W7. You can also use the Nano S on your smartphone, and for that, you need an OTG cable and mobile version of Ledger Live.

Since you only use Bitcoin, I think Electrum is enough for you, you can use it on your old computer too because in combination with hardware wallet it provides very good protection. You only need Ledger Live if you want to use some altcoins, and for firmware update which is available once or twice a year.

Windows 7 is outdated for a long time now. It is missing a ton of security features which are built into Win10.
You should switch to Win10 as fast as you can.

Note that the upgrade to windows 10 is still completely free.
So, just backup all of your important data and upgrade it via the "Windows 10 Update Assistant". This is an official tool from Microsoft.
And Win10 will accept your licence key from Win7 without any hassle.

No one with even the slightest sense for security should continue to use Windows 7.

bob123, except you repeat yourself countless times regarding W7, why do you think someone who is using a hardware wallet should be too concerned about the fact that it is running an operating system that still has full customer support? None of the alleged security threats you have already mentioned in your previous posts is not to my knowledge, caused any loss of user assets (cryptocurrency).

Windows 10 is much worst OS then W7 in terms of privacy (it is one big spy software), and some of the security benefits it brings are practically negligible. If you are already giving advice then advise people to switch to Linux, which is better than W10 in every way possible.

Recently, we were able to read the news that Russian President Putin is still using Windows XP - so I wonder how one of the most powerful people in the world manages to stay protected from hackers who would be very happy to peek into his computer?

None of the alleged security threats you have already mentioned in your previous posts is not to my knowledge, caused any loss of user assets (cryptocurrency).

There is no (known) risk to a hardware wallet.
And if there would be a risk, it would apply to every OS.

I didn't mention anywhere that the cryptocurrencies stored on a hardware wallet should be the reason upgrade the OS.
It has been more of a general advice, not related to hardware wallets at all.

Windows 10 is much worst OS then W7 in terms of privacy (it is one big spy software)

I fully agree with that.

and some of the security benefits it brings are practically negligible.

The operative word here is some.
The majority of the introduced security features make quite a big difference and are by far not negligible.

It is out of the question that Win10 is more secure than Win7.

If you value your privacy, don't use windows at all.
If you don't value your privacy that much, you can as well use Win10 which offers better security overall.

If you are already giving advice then advise people to switch to Linux, which is better than W10 in every way possible.

That's usually the first thing i do. But since a lot of people either don't want to get used to a new OS/new software or rely on windows software too much, the only option for them would be to upgrade to the newer version of Windows.

I also wouldn't say linux is better in 'every way possible'.
For me, the upsides of linux highly outweigh the downsides when compared to windows. But each person has to decide that for him/herself.

If people don't want to switch to linux (which is understandable imo), then they should at least upgrade to Win10.
Win7 misses security features and soon won't receive any security updates anymore (End of Life reached in less than a month).

Recently, we were able to read the news that Russian President Putin is still using Windows XP - so I wonder how one of the most powerful people in the world manages to stay protected from hackers who would be very happy to peek into his computer?

He himself can't stay protected at all.
It is his IT department which keeps him secure (if at all).

1) According to several internet resources, he is not allowed to use any windows OS newer than XP due to the missing certification from the FSTEC which is required for an OS to be used in such a position.
2) They are working on an own OS called 'Astra Linux' which most probably will replace his ancient OS
3) Who knows whether he really uses this computer to access the internet.
4) Who knows whether he hasn't been infected already (The IT department might just do daily backups and restore his PC without making things like that official)
5) I doubt there aren't good security mechanisms in place (Firewall, IDS/IPS, etc..) which would stop any threat entering their Network, way before it could even reach his computer.

He probably can stay pretty safe using his ancient computer due to their network security. But in the end.. it is just dumb.
However, the real security measurements which protect his computer are definitely not the OS itself (regardless of which OS he is using) and neither any software installed on his computer (random AV etc.).

An attacker would not try to enter his computer, once in their network. I am sure that there are way more interesting targets than the XP of Putin.
But i also believe, if one enters their network.. it would be extremely easy to get access to his computer.

I think it should go without saying that I plan to upgrade to Windows 10 due to the fact Windows 7 is no longer supported starting early January. Plus I am Upgrading my RAM and Graphics Card, I simply just haven't got around to it yet. My friend actually has a two Hard-Drives one with Linux on it since Windows 10 is getting like someone just said pretty invasive. My friend simply just wants to be able to have the choice of using Windows 10 or Linux least that's what he told me.

I am only using Bitcoin I have no idea yet if I will use any type of Altcoins in the future it is quite possible though. Thank You for the responses which based on the replies I will try using it with Electrum just wanted to give an Update that I figured out the problem basically.

I am only using Bitcoin
If you're going to use your Ledger exclusively for bitcoin, you don't need Ledger Live. Electrum is a much more advanced wallet than Ledger Live. I have a Live Ledger installed, but I've never used it to send bitcoin, because Electrum is much better.

I'm confused with Ledger Live as it won't let me use the "manager Tab on the left. It's saying "go to the dashboard on device" or some like that with a rotating icon next to it on the right that just keeps trying to connect to something but is unable to.

Is my Ledger Live set up properly with my Ledger Nano S and I'm confused by Electrum with the Ledger Nano S Wallet I tried Re-Installing it since I saw in the instructions you want to set it up for "hardware wallets" or some during the initial part of setting up.

Except when I Downloaded it again and Re-Installed it I plugged in my Ledger Nano S and I got no idea if it's working with the Ledger or not as I never saw the initial part of the set up asking what type of Wallet I want to set up so I could choose "Hardware Wallet" but I think it's working since when I tried opening Electrum it told me to plug in my Ledger, I tried opening it a different time it and it just gave an Error. It's definitely not working as a regular Electrum Desktop Wallet that's all I know for sure 100% other than that I'm just guessing.

Are you actually on "The Dashboard" on the device? That is to say... it's connected, unlocked and sitting on the list of coin apps+settings...

To access the Ledger Manager your device needs to be connected and unlocked with your PIN. You shouldn't have a wallet app open on your hardware wallet when trying to access the Manager. Just like HCP shows in the picture, unlock it and request access via the Manager button in Ledger Live. After that you need to give your Ledger permission to access the Manager by clicking on the corresponding button on your hardware wallet.

Is my Ledger Live set up properly with my Ledger Nano S and I'm confused by Electrum with the Ledger Nano S Wallet I tried Re-Installing it since I saw in the instructions you want to set it up for "hardware wallets" or some during the initial part of setting up.

Ledger Live and Electrum are only user interfaces, and to use Nano S with them all you have to do is follow the instructions. These are things that are discussed in detail, and there should not be any confusion that is happening in your case. You get the error because you're doing something wrong, and to avoid this in the future, my advice is to read the following : Set up and use Electrum+Ledger

In short, first plugg in your Nano S to PC, unlock it with PIN, and navigate to Bitcoin app, open app (by click on both buttons). Then open Electrum and select wallet you want to open (if you have only 1 wallet it will be automatically offered to you) and just click next until a new window opens. This is all you need to do, but you can not have Ledger Live and Electrum working at the same time with one Nano S.

The Ledger Nano S is compatible with Windows (7+), Mac (10.9+) and Linux. However, if you are using a Windows 7 device, you will need to finalize the update on another device. Once the firmware is updated, the device is fully compatible with Windows 7.Jun 28, 2018

I just googled about using Hardware Wallet on Windows 7 since I am having problems with the Internet Wi-Fi not working on my friend's laptop right now. I can't wait for my Computer Upgrade to Windows 10 I'm getting a New Hard-Drive it would be longer than i'd like to wait if it's possble to use it on Windows 7.

I saw a Version Update on my Device from Firmware 14. something to 15. Does anyone have know what firmware Version is required for it to work on Windows 7 does it need the absolute newest version. I read some people say the new firmware update works fine and others say there is all kinds of problems with it so I just left it since I figured it was truly a necessity they would make the Download Required or recommended.
