Hi, I use breadwallet on an iphone and now have a new iphone. Is it safe to synch the phones via bluetooth, to transfer all the data from the old phone to the new phone, including breadwallet ? ie, will any crypto balance reflected on the wallet app be the same once ive synched the phones? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No.
This may work, but it is not the safest neither the most effective.

Do you have the seed? Seed is usually a set of 12 to 24 words.

Just download the new wallet and insert your seed there (usually the option is import new wallet)

As you are already using a new phone, why don't you download a better wallet?
I would recommend download Samourai Wallet or Electrum wallet

Just insert your seed in any wallet and it will work.

So far you can download the wallet again through the official site, I will recommend you to download the wallet again using the official site.
The only reason why you may not be able to use the wallet on another phone is when you enable 2FA on your old phone. And, if you do, you can disable it on your old phone and enable it on your new phone after you have your wallet back with your coins.

2fa Will not make any difference.
2fa works only locally in your phone. If any user is able to get his seed , he will be able to get the funds without any 2fa request.

2fa is useless in terms of security when using bitcoin. It is useful only when accessing exchanges, which only make off chain transactions

every  on chain transaction (which includes importing a wallet) will ignore 2fa/fingerprint/pin completely

From your statement, it seems the old phone is still going to be in use maybe not by you but then, it's best you just download or open a new wallet if you've got the link and just import your previous address through your seed phrase to the new one and your all set. Duplicates is kind of risky.

OP i would advise you to follow Bitmover's advice.  Just do everything on the new phone as thou you were starting a fresh when it comes to bitcoin wallets. Just download the wallet apps then import your wallets using the seed.

If i were you i would even create a new wallet with a new seed( i mean there is no limit to creating a new wallet) then send my bitcoins to the new wallet... just to be a little more secure in case someone has access to my old phone

Follow what bitmover suggested.

And just to add, since you have a new iphone like you said, don't forget to make a complete factory reset on your older phone especially when you're going to give your phone to someone else. Just to remove the traces to your old crypto wallet, and for privacy reasons in general.

Using seeds to move your funds from old phone to new one is a good method. It help you to:
- Understand the mechanism of wallet backup (with seeds) and recovery (from seeds).
- Move your funds without any loss as fees for transactions.
There are risks if you don' reset your old phone after import seeds to new phone, and if you leave your phone out of your control, you might lose your funds when someone get access to your old phone as well as your wallet from that phone.

There is another method, but you will have to take some minor loss for transaction fees.
Install new wallet, with new seed on your new phone; then move your funds from old wallet (on old phone) to new wallet (on new phone). It is always an option if you have large fund enough compares to transaction fee.

I still would advise you to do the first method.

A reminder:
If you use Electrum wallet, you have an option to expand seeds from 12 (default) to 24. When it comes to the step of seeds, choose the Option, and tick on "Extend this seed with custom words"

Thanks for the prompt replies! The new phone is not activated yet. There is nothing on it.  I will be keeping the old phone, but need to transfer everything from it to the new phone and the easiest way to do this is to synch them via bluetooth. I do have my seed phrase, but not with me and I won't be home until Saturday. I want to use the seed phrase to recover my funds, as I think you learn better via experience. Is it safe though, to synch the phones in the meantime and then recover via seed when I get home ? I'm not clear if synching between phones will alter the breadwallet app in some way, making it difficult to recover via seed? (or am I not properly understanding exactly what happens when you use the seed to move/recover funds?). Also, I can't send the funds to a new wallet on the new phone as it is not completely set-up yet, and part of the set-up process is synching the phones! I can send the funds to my girlfriend, and she can send them back to me once the new phone and wallet are set up, but that's 2 sets of transaction fees. Not a lot, but a bit unnecessary? I've also noticed that transactions on breadwallet take a rather long time to process, so far up to several days! I would use Samurai but its not available for iOS.

I guess that you have not yet move your funds with seeds, even one time, haven't you?
If that is the answer, now it is the right time for you to practice both:
  • Moving your fund from one device to another with seeds
  • Recovering your fund with seed
When you finish it the first time, you will become familiar with it and won't fall into paranoid when you lose your old phone.

There is no risks when you moving your fund with seeds if:
  • You don't import your seeds to fake wallets (from phishing sites)
  • Your new devices are clean from threats (viruses, malwares, etc.)
  • Your seeds' backups are saved and kept off-line
I don't advise you to save your seeds' backup online. It is too dangerous.
Additionally, don't trust, verify fisrt before doing anything with your 'real' fund.

Newbies - Read before using exchanges or investing
Electrum wallet - Update safely and avoid phishing wallets?

Though I don't really know how it works technically, but probably just do the iPhone sync thing. If you encountered a problem with the syncing of the breadwallet app and data between two phones, no problemo! You have the seed phrase anyway so you can simply clear the data(or re-install) of the breadwallet on your new phone and simply re-import the seed then you're good to go.

Personally though, just to be extra sure, I'd probably just generate a new wallet on the new phone and send over the funds. Transaction fees are next to nothing right now anyway so I'd just send the funds using a 1 sats/byte transaction fee if I don't need to use the funds asap.

Your addresses and balances to it are linked to seed phrase, hence you should be able to recover your funds via seed phrase irrespective of if you sync or not.

I agree on generating new wallet but if op doesn't want to generate new wallet then any of those option can be used. Synching the new phone with the old phone would work I think and downloading the app again is the same. Anyway, I suggest that op should generate new wallet just to be safe then transfer the funds.

(....)
Can you share with us if you able succeed doing the syncing the two IOS mobile phone via bluetooth without resetting anything in your breadwallet like it's completely normal after syncing it to another device. Since as you said, you still have your backup seeds, I think it will be safe.
Since I also don't anything in IOS environment, I'm a little bit curious and amaze about this.
