If you're worried for the outcome then its better not to gamble at all unless you're just using your spare money and hoping to grow it but prepared even you lose it.

I think it is better to start gambling in the new years since it is a new year it could be a great win for you. Also, I think it is better to spend your money for a gift for your family or maybe you could just treat them in a great restaurant. Personally, I prefer to do both as long as I have money to play. It doesn't matter to me when to play as long as I am having fun then I will play. It depends on any situation if you want to enjoy after or before christmas with your friends and they wanted to gamble why not enjoy playing gambling with your friends. Small amount is a great start you don't need to spend too much while enjoying both of you and your friends.

It depends on you if you will gamble before or on the new year because other people like me would rather spend more time with our family in holidays like this because we don't usually have time to have a family bonding in non holidays. Why bother on having second thoughts when the result when you pick either one of you have mentioned is just the same? The only reason for me to not gamble around this time would be as I will be spending time with my friends and family. I personally dont believe in taboos associated with gambling around new year time, but maybe I would have a resolutions to restrict the time I spent on gambling.
