"The Dutch gambling authority (Kansspelautoriteit) fined companies offering online betting and casino / gambling games in the Netherlands a total of €3.5m in 2019, an increase of more than 50% the 2018 fine total.
.... the rise is due to both a rise in the maximum fine (to €200,000) and a rise in the number offenders being penalized."

"The Netherlands senate voted to open the gambling market to domestic and foreign gaming operators as early as 2021. Gambling firms will need to apply for a licence, and will be forced to pay gambling taxes at 29%, - one of the highest rates in Europe."

"Most of the major European gambling and online casino groups have now been fined by the Dutch watchdog - so many of them will need to wait for a cooling period before their application can be accepted." - source

Is online gambling in Netherlands is prohibit? they should open it by 2020 instead of 2021 as they can see how much money is flowing to the gambling operators.

It is really one of the biggest tax contributor while others still doesn't see the point of its existence. The article didnt mentioned if some of them are crypto related casinos.

No, it's not prohibited. As I understand, there is just one official legal casino in Netherlands - Holland Casino. It's owned by state, what is really strange and not common thing, especially in EU.
So, it means that all others casinos worked illegaly in Netherlans and got fined for that.

Additional with that is I think their government is fighting for gambling addiction for their country, as what I saw on another article here: https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2019/12/dutch-gambling-authority-fines-10-companies-a-total-of-e3-5m-this-year/
Quote
The new law, which will not come into effect until at least 2021, is restrictive and contains a number of element to try to combat addiction. Players have to register and state their limit and will be periodically reminded of the risk of addiction on screen.
They are extremely strict regards with gambling. And I don't think if this is bad news for everyone since for sure that their government is just protecting their people on gambling addiction.

You are right they should do it as soon as possible not 2021, there is a lot of gambling company there that has already a lot of loyal customers this will hamper their operation, or they can just go overseas to get a license, so instead of retaining and regulating they will end up losing them.

Isn't it kind of a setback in the Netherlands to only hold one legal casino? Like, they themselves are hindering the possible developments the industry could've provided through the country. Seemingly because of this, most foreign countries actually try and take advantage of this, offering Dutch language services in their casinos, basically making them lose more customers than they should originally have.

Still, it seems like they regard the security and welfare of their users since they have quite strict regulations with gambling casino implementation. Had a look on a list of their criteria, which basically lists a guarantee of KYC on their system.

Gambling firms will need to apply for a licence, and will be forced to pay gambling taxes at 29%, - one of the highest rates in Europe."

It will be interesting to see the long term effect of these high taxation policies. A question will need to be answered as to whether high taxes represent an effective and responsible utilization of money.

Or whether they're more prone towards destroying the wealth, productivity and living standards of nations. Without providing citizens a cost effective amount of tangible positive returns for the high taxes they pay.

Oh all right, I understand it now. So, that's the reason why the other casinos got fined.

With that allowance on the given year, these operators can still have time to think of other way if they can't wait for that year. The huge taxation can also make them refuse about the said applications to be accepted if they have found other countries to be a good place to operate.

Well, Netherlands is a country of contrasts. You can buy weed without any restrictions there, but you're not allowed to gamble where you want Smiley
By the way, it would be interesting how crypto casinos is working in Netherlands. Obviously, they are under restriction too, so they should be blocked. Do we have people from Netherlands here who can share their experience?

Are they punishing it with fine because it is directly competing with the government-run casinos, here in our country all our casinos are government-run so they can get funds for their infrastructure if the government don't want to give them license because they want to monopolize running their own casinos, then these illegal will really have to wait some time to get a license, they might not even give them license to operate.

I'd actually bet on them going to other countries while retaining their customer base. With how the casinos in Netherlands are restricted by much rules and regulations, customers who are willing to spend on gambling would surely find ways to retain their membership to some foreign casinos that they have used for quite some time already.

It will be interesting to see the long term effect of these high taxation policies. A question will need to be answered as to whether high taxes represent an effective and responsible utilization of money.
Isn't it too high? I really doubt a lot of casinos would register their businesses towards such amount. Plus, it isn't even guaranteed that Netherland gamblers would actually register on their casino, since just as said so, a lot of casinos were banned already meaning a lot of the people of Netherland already had a casino beforehand. Plus, them enforcing strict regulations upon gamblers themselves, this just made life much more hard for them (most likely).

on what country you are living  ? you mean they are registered under government ? or you mean the casino were owned by a government  ? if its govt registered then they should have thier owns license but if not then those are considered illegal and should have been fined of  punished if caught  . on our country alot of casinos here were also illegal and more have already caught  . that is nice to know because authorities were working to hunt them  .

I'm just not sure why the companies are still operating even though they are being fined a hefty amount. There might be something between those companies and those who let them run there. In the year 2021 would be different for them if they happen to open gambling in foreign and local markets. The situation they have now with gambling companies are strange. Gambling companies are wealthy, so they could quickly pay the fine.

I wonder if each of those companies knew what they were doing, and whether the Holland authorities also informed them well in advance or if they just delivered the fines without warning.

This is proof though that even licensed casinos still break the rules,,, I am sure these are all licensed otherwise they would have even been dealt with criminal lawsuits, right?

Is online gambling in Netherlands is prohibit? they should open it by 2020 instead of 2021 as they can see how much money is flowing to the gambling operators.

It is really one of the biggest tax contributor while others still doesn't see the point of its existence. The article didnt mentioned if some of them are crypto related casinos.
No, it's not prohibited. As I understand, there is just one official legal casino in Netherlands - Holland Casino. It's owned by state, what is really strange and not common thing, especially in EU.
So, it means that all others casinos worked illegaly in Netherlans and got fined for that.

Right, I have never heard a state run casino, so it's really weird that of all the countries, Netherland is one of them.

29% taxes is huge, but I guess casino operators are willing to pay because we all know that gambling industry is a billion dollar business. Government wants to take a piece of the action as well so it's going to be interesting to see how Netherlands gambling industry will be in 2021 and beyond.

29% Taxation for that particular country? Thats a horrible situation for gambling site/place owners on that particular place.
We dont know if this would have snowball effect and be considered with other countries as well but i would say that this wont really be
good into their sight.

It's a huge percentage for the tax but if they can really see that their customers are loyal on that country, they'll stay and wait for that approval. But it's a business and they can't let the current customers wait until they launch again because for sure they'll look for another place to gamble.

They are too strict with their rules and it will push the potential operators that are looking to their country as a place to make their headquarters. Perhaps, they can make an amendment and adjust the fine with the taxation that they want to implement against casinos.

I think it is extremely expensive for any casino to pay 29% taxes. It looks like Netherlands don’t really want gambling in their country as I think not many casinos will be teased to open up there.I also think there is not a lot of population in Netherlands too that would make casinos pay that crazy tax amount.

I think the Netherland governments are thinking that the market of gambling is getting congested and many are just making their online gambling site that this is the best thing to do in fining companies right now, I don't know what is their reason but I guess this is for a good cause and certainly if it will really going to the public for infrastructures and to benefit a country that is,

I surely think that some governments are working on establishing ways of getting extra credits in their booming gambling casino's mostly for improving their country.

Of course the time allotted can be changed. If the authority can make a certain adjustments on their laws, maybe they can open it by 2020. It needs a thorough observations and studies to pursue this kind of legalities since it involves money.
