Using Crypto at Gas Stations

It's 2020, yet crypto and Blockchain technology are still in their infancy. The introduction of smart contracts (via the Ethereum blockchain) to the mainstream world, has opened up a plethora of possibilities that were never imagined. Many companies have launched their own tokens via ICOs, IEOs, and even STOs. On the hand, stablecoins have been the hottest trend within the crypto space as they provide the convenience of Fiat with the security of the Blockchain.

Now, imagine if a mainstream company creates a Blockchain token that could be used at Gas Stations worldwide? This would definitely increase adoption of crypto and Blockchain tech within the mainstream world like never before. After all, paying for gas is a necessity these days for transportation. This, coupled up with self-serve, could be quite revolutionary. I'd imagine people driving to a gas station and paying with crypto from their phone in their own car to get their gas tank filled automatically. This hasn't been implemented yet, but it would be cool to see it happen someday.

What are your thoughts?

In my own opinion, it could be really a great idea to use cryptocurrency as payment method at a gas stations because cryptocurrency will be more popular and using it as a payment would be convenient that you don't need to wait for your change. But i think it will not yet implemented because there are still countries does not yet accept cryptocurrency in other countries due to increased of scams in ICO projects, so i think it will take long for it will be implemented

Isn't it dangerous if the transaction signal queue can trigger the gas to overflow and become a fire? unless previously ordered with the application system in advance. if they don't use stable coins, many will be confused by the ever changing rates. On the other hand, it might be effective if applied at electric vehicle stations.

Very good opinion, I agree if this works through the application before we refuel, the buyer will get a purchase code or voucher before finally being exchanged at the refueling station. I hope this kind of thing can happen as crypto is growing rapidly and surely this will really happen in my country.

crypto is the same as stock, so it will be a little difficult to implement it as a payment instrument, because in seconds the price of crypto is always changing, even though now it is a stable coin trend, but it is still difficult to implement.

It actually might be implemented in some time in the future. There is no doubt that blockchain technology along with cryptocurrencies are the future of the global payment system, so crypto will be used everywhere.

I was about to say that it is gonna be a great addition to the use of Blockchain. In fact I can see the use of it in basic ways in our daily lives, but I had the thought of seeing the sign in gasoline stations about the not using mobile pones while refueling.
The way of refueling might be different in other country, because in my country we tend to stay in our ride as a crew aids the refueling.
Other countries tend to just pay first inside of the convenience store before it gets refueled so I think it is gonna be applicable and somehow less dangerous for them.

For gas station, in my country if it possibly happen, maybe only a few who will do it. This is just if because in my country no other than fiat can be used as payment. Since people will afraid to use phone in gas station, people will faster to pay with physic money because sometime it will need time when people pay with other payment.

Not only in your coutry, but most of the countries people is afraid using their mobile phone, also it is prohibited using mobile phones in a gas station. It is a bad idea since there are risk of using phones in a gas station.
It is true, they will prefer to use fiat instead, however, if crypto will be develope more, maybe this could possibly happen in the future. The idea is good, but the thing is, this community still lacks the capability to implement it.

Maybe crypto will really helpful like when foreigner want to pay something in merchant in other country. So he don't need to exchange his money first in money exchange. With that, people wouldn't need to worry anymore if they don't have physic money anymore. But for that happen, will need time.

I am interested in the system to be used, it would not be dangerous to use a customized drive-thru system, where the transaction screening is still done at the first gate, such as an electronic entry ticket in general, and then can enter the refueling zone afterwards, things This is not too difficult if applied correctly.

imagine the sketchy shit people could do, form evil shit, to simply getting free gas
of course, ATMS still run on Windows XP and thats considered an acceptable risk, so maybe a few hacks would be as well
some projects claim they are working on ways to verify, like checksums, smart contracts, so maybe that wont be an issue tho one day

That could be great idea, it could be a great business if we use blockchain in many establishment, I am sure the first company that will adopt this one could have many clients and investors that would like to buy their system since this is a unique one, and yes even in ATM there are a lot of it in the market, crypto payment will be like what we are doing using card transactions, and we chat pay and so on.

It's easy to implement that to use crypto to pay at the gas station because the main thing that is needed should be a high scalability blockchain that makes the gas station able to convert it into the local currency.
But if that was about to use it in the crypto form and that's almost impossible.
Some people can pay it to use the existing crypto card like CRO or even crypterium right now. Basically this idea is to exist right now and some people use it but they still need the card to be able to convert their crypto.

I also always think about this, and furthermore pay the cost of electricity and water bills using crypto. because electricity and water are also unavoidable daily necessities and that is certainly every month. if crypto becomes a medium for these payments, then automatically everyone in the world will use crypto, because no one can avoid these two bills every month.

But in reality we don't see any merchant which accept that for now since we are lacking of government acceptance and citizen adoptions and users are few compare to the numbers of person around the world and if this happen for sure we can see  the price of bitcoin bounce and the other utility companies will follow to accept bitcoins as payment options.

I completely agree with this. Imagine the ease of paying for a gas station with a single QR scan without paper money.
But the problem is how to promote it. In my country, every gas station can pay with e-money. And what I saw was that it was still lacking in public interest. Most of us still pay by fiat.

The issue is not whether it's cool to pay with crypto for gas, but the main hindrance is that use of phone is forbidden in gas stations. Maybe if this will be implemented, it might require a better approach, but if not competitive with the traditional FIAT payment for gas, then it's somewhat baseless. Well, I guess that was really interesting in a sense that the concept of using cryptocurrency to buy gasoline as gas stations will be in lined with the latest technology in which crypto will be the mainstream or the ones that will be used for payment options. It will be another great service to be provided once that idea of yours will be implemented because indeed that your idea of using cryptocurrency will provide the user convenience on filling up tanks of their car and by just easily processing payment in terms of cryptocurrency from your phone will provide a fast and hassle free payment option because gasoline stations have been part of our daily lives and it will truly push people to adapt on using cryptocurrency.

I think it will increase the crypto market demand so much that every top company will want their own token. But it's not possible worldwide right now because crypto is still illegal in so many countries.

I have never noticed your posts or account in the past, but you seem to make some really good points out here in spammy Altcoin Discussion.


I always go by the idea of one world one coin (the primary fact behind which bitcoin was evolved). I admire the technology behind some of the major alts like Ethereum and Monero while the latter is the only alternative for bitcoin and the former is a kind of a decentralized computer. Ethereum can be used for blockchain projects but I don't get the idea of why should they be listed and traded? They can be used for the creation of blockchain based decentralized applications but Bitcoin and Monero are the only coins which can be used to dethrone the shitty fiat money.

Libra was created just to create a fake FUD among bitcoiners with facebook backing them but being advertised as a decentralized currency. So does the same goes with other so called decentralized currencies. These coins would stay for a shorter term and there would be only 3 coins in existence i.e Bitcoin for global payments, Ethereum for creating decentralized applications and Monero for privacy based transactions. If people doesn't want to get noticed while transacting, they would go with Monero and if an organization needs to create a decentralized application, they could use Ethereum for the process and certainly if common people want to transact they could use Bitcoin.

Scams should be taken into consideration as many investors have lost millions in ICOs and this why we shouldn't be favorable for creation of another coin but rather think of ideas (like LN, Schnorr Signatures) for making bitcoin scalable to quite an extent and create various apps which could ease up the bitcoin and monero transactions in gas stations. When Bitcoin's LN has a wider reach they would surely dethrone and destroy the whole ICO market and so called scalable coins (apart from Ethereum and Monero). We are just 10 years into the creation of bitcoin and we will probably see the 24000+ transaction per second (the current Visa speed) processing sooner than we think.

Smart Contracts as introduced by Ethereum Blockchain may seemed fascinating in the starting but with time even Ethereum chain has shown lots of vulnerabilities. During the season of high usage of chain, fees peak over $1. When Crypto Kitties launched, ETH network became so slow that transactions took 2 days to process at regular gas and wei.
We need more scalable solution than Ethereum chain to make crypto as medium to pay on Gas Stations.

I think the idea is great but we have to consider the safety of the users. The setup could be fire hazzard and result a possible explosion since mobile phone and a gasoline station was involved.

But to solve this problem, I think the crypto payment can be done thru a drivethru paying station that is quite in a safe distance from the gasoline/fuel pump. The user will pay to the paying station then the paying station will provide a QR code slip with code (the code will be manually inputted as backup when the QR code fails to register on the reader).

I've seen one gas station in the Philippines that accepts bitcoin but I think the problem using bitcoin is not that convenient or the transaction speed is not that long. Some altcoins can make this happen and it should be instant so that the driver don't need to be wait for the transaction to happen. But the real problem for this is adoption, do the gas companies accepts to use this?
