Where's the source regarding that hearsay? AFAIK before the killing, there's already some incidents that Trump just let pass until another incident came and he can no longer stay quiet.

Calling it WW3 is stupid and arrogant (USA and Iran are NOT the world), but a "new" conflict to "unite" the masses back home sounds pragmatically correct. Maybe he could be re-elected (or thinks so) from this?

Trump just held a Press Conference and he said he isn't going to retaliate to the bombings of American bases in Iraq.
That is definitely a good thing it could defuse the situation and hopefully not cause a war, if he would choose to retaliate, the situation would only get worse and actually cause a war indeed. 
Luckely Trump didn't go to far and stopped the escalation.

Well I think that it is possible.
At least we are going to see a huge bloodshed in Middle East soon. Iran attacked 2 US military bases in Iraq. If the US responds again then we are going to face a really difficult situation.
