Reminder:
  • Checking name of coin, ticker and read warning when you create receiving address.
  • Checking prefix of coin address because in some cases, it can help you to differentiate coins.
  • Asking for confirmations on receiving addresses from receivers, if you doubt that they give you addresses on wrong chains before sending funds
  • Being as careful as possible, double- or tripple-check, and make win-win transactions on right chains !

Moving funds from one account to the others is the first lesson newbies have to learn and start their lives in crypto. Bitcoin is the King of crypto so moving bitcoin is a mandatory lesson to learn.

If you have already read news, articles on "Losing funds (bitcoin) after sending its to wrong address, or to address of another coin", it is good because you will know how serious that mistake is.

If you have not yet read anything like this, now let's read my thread.

To understand how serious that mistake is, I invite you to read these 2 threads:
The excellent answer from @DannyHamilton

It means if receivers (your friends, relative, whoever) or the exchanges (have role as receivers) don't have control on your private keys or don't want to use private key (of receiving address) to do technical steps and credits mistakenly-sent coins back to you, you lose your money.

All platforms have warnings when you create deposit addresses. I don't highlight words in these images, you have to read them to improve your carefulness and patience.  Wink
Poloniex
Binance
Huobi Pro
Bittrex
BitMex

Even you are receivers, you have to read these warnings before finishing your works. Because if the mistake belongs to your side (as receivers who give wrong address on wrong blockchains), it's unacceptable to request senders taking that loses and resend another fund to you.

As a receiver, what to read and check?
  • Name of coin: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV, etc. Being very careful with any coin that have Bitcoin as prefix.
  • Ticker: BTC, BCH, BTCSV, etc.

As a sender, what to do?
  • Name of coin: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV, etc. Being very careful with any coin that have Bitcoin as prefix.
  • Ticker: BTC, BCH, BTCSV, etc.
  • Checking prefix of receiving address. You might have clue to differentiate between different coins.

Double-check or tripple-check will help you staying away from unexpected problems with transactions from and to wrong blockchains.

There are abundant coins with Bitcoin as prefix or suffix in their coin-names. Here is results from Coinmarketcap's Search tool.

For altcoins, being careful for some coins which have requirements to give correct address and MEMO (or other alternatives) to have valid transactions. If you give incorrect details for one of them or both, you will lose your money.

Great topic tranthidung 🙂 as always  Wink
You responded to what came into my mind just today when i was about to look for a transaction hash by checking the transaction's history of some addresses. I used blockchair explorer and this is the result i've got by searching the first btc address : https://blockchair.com/search?q=1QFWxRby6Nxf3jd2seW7XAMQvuh4Q18pST
I was surprised see that the address is used in three different blockchains BTC BCH and BSV  Huh
The address is valid supports three tokens but each one has a different private key. And those private keys cannot be owned by one person . I think am not mistaken and there is no connections between the three blockchains, right?
You can imagine what/how much disasters could happen by mistakenly send wrong token to right address or right token to wrong address .

You have created good threads like this one. Newbies should be learning this information and always read everything when sending coin or token to another address to avoid losing funds. Is there a situation like this where a coin or token is sent to wrong address ex: btc to bch address?. Even I am a newbie before I did not mistakenly sent a coin to another coin address.

To understand how serious that mistake is, I invite you to read these 2 threads:
Im affraid if people making such mistake they are not really focused. I mean not mistake from just beign not focused but too spread in terms of crypto coins. Focus on BTC. Focus on BCH (?) but not both.
Many people lost  BTC because they tried to cash out BCH and failed miserable due to trojan horses, mistakes made like this topic describes or many more.

another good suggestion is to stay away from scam website such as bitcoin.com that would dump an altcoin on you and call it bitcoin. there has been many cases over the past 2 years where a newbie went to this site and bought what they thought were bitcoin but ended up with a shitcoin called bitcoincash.

I was surprised see that the address is used in three different blockchains BTC BCH and BSV  Huh
there is nothing to be surprised about. when you copy something you are copying everything including address formats. and that's just the tip of the iceberg because blockchair only has 2 of these altcoins otherwise you would have seen about 50 different addresses from 50 different copies of bitcoin.

Thank you for your reminder. Initially, I forgot to add that important information in OP. Now we have it.  Cheesy

Nice post buddy, this should be read by all the beginner out there, btc address and bch address is really different thing so don't send your BTC to the BCH wallet because the money won't be sent if you do that and if you did you cannot return the money anymore, so double checking the wallet address is really important when transferring the money, I know that there are some people who are tired of doing such double checking of things but one things for sure, if you do that you may assure yourself that you are doing it right.

Well said mate because once the money has been sent it cannot be recovered anymore, so learning this things is really importsnt to avoid some mistakes.

I have highlighted it patiently ... thank you for reminding it.

Although BTC is a bitcoin symbol (maybe officially) widely used everywhere, from the OP post I found that some services still use old Bitcoin symbols like XBT
BitMex

Before using BTC, Bitcoin had used XBT and BC as symbols. However, because BTC is now a global symbol, if you find XBT or BC to represent the Bitcoin symbol then you need to contact support to ensure that it is a bitcoin address.

The bitcoin symbol is currently only BTC, nothing else.

OP, I think that this should be added in a way or another, but with big fonts and colors, to the first post.
Since bitcoin . com keeps advertising that their altcoin is the true Bitcoin, newbies will keep getting fooled and many of them will also send those to Bitcoin addresses.
(Though unfortunately in many cases they also come here only after making the mistake.)

I had experienced this in the past where I had sent coins to the wrong address but I was lucky enough that the exchange has recovered my coins. But we all should double-check the address while sending the coins to the exchange.

Many people have experiened this as I read in reddit posts made by different people with the same problem and not one of them replied about getting their btc back from where thet have sent it to. You are lucky that you are able to get your coins back but I don't know what will might happen if you have sent it to a wallet address that you own instead of an exchange wallet address.

Though all exchanges warn you won't get coins back from the wrong addresses and have a disclaimer saying so, some will sort you out. I can't remember which one it was, but one exchange bills customers $200 an hour for the work required to recover wrongly sent coins.

Even if it does happen it's worth contacting them to see if they're willing to do anything.
