Thanks for the informative replies @everyone. Other than the provably lost coins of 182+ btc and the 7,500 btc thrown away by James Howells, it's really hard to determine how many were lost to date. I think there's only a small percentage of the zombie coins with lost/forgotten private keys but that's just my opinion.

Someone shared about quantum computers and basically claimed that those lost/forgotten coins will be recovered sometime in the future but that's still speculation imo.

this is just another advertisement done by this blockchain analysis service. they are trying to gain popularity so they keep releasing this type of stuff that the news sites also love to report (copy paste as news). otherwise this has been discussed thousands of times and same statistics were released just as many times by either individuals or similar blockchain analysis groups trying to gain popularity. and they all inflate their numbers by making a false assumption that if a coin hasn't moved for X days it is lost. and they do that because if they don't the number is going to be 90% smaller.

It is difficult to say exactly how many coins have been lost at the moment. But, of course, there are a lot of these coins and people will continue to lose access to their wallets for various reasons. Personally, I would be very offended to get into a situation where I can’t get access to my bitcoins.

Since Peter Schiff's tweet is what lead to this thread, an update might be in order:

My #Bitcoin mystery is solved. I mistook my pin for my password. When Blockchain updated their app I got logged out. I tired logging back in using my pin, which was the only "password" I had ever known or used. I also never had a copy of my seed phrase. Honest but costly mistake!

To clarify my last tweet I was not able to recover my #Bitcoin.  Since I never actually knew my password, just the pin, and never had a copy of my seed phrase, I have no way to recover the Bitcoin. So the problem was not a corrupted wallet, but my confusing a pin for a password.

Learn how to use wallets, folks! You can't have financial sovereignity without personal responsibility!
