What did I do wrong with this debate thread?

I believe there will be a soft fork in the Bitcoin blockchain later this year. This will introduce some more improvements and efficiencies to it function. I started that thread in the hope that I could provoke some interest and debate about the changes. It is topics like this that I would like to see discussed on the more general boards like Discussion and Beginners. Apart from JackG there has been no response or interest in the topic ( thanks JackG ). I'm going to give him 5 sMerit, and maybe that will stimulate some interest.

So where did I go wrong? Is the topic too technical? Do Bitcoin Talk members not care about these changes? Should I have included more details in the OP, and not left it to readers to make the comments?

I think you should add a short introduction part on the main post even if JackG posted some guides on his post. People (including me) tend to be lazy and not read if there is no explanation of the discussed topics. Your post inspired me to be more active in the Bitcoin part of the forum and should inspire many more people to do so because we have a lot to learn from it.I saw that you try so hard to be useful for the beginners of the forum and you deserve more than you received.

1. Most people that surf the Bitcoin Discussion board are spammers looking for megathreads for a quick repetitive and useless post.
2. Because they only care about “what do you think about btc” kind of posts, they focus on that. Do they want to read your thread, think, research and make a constructive post? No. What they want is something they can answer in 1 minute and move to the next.
3. Because Bitcoin Discussion is filled with these type of posts and people, good users do NOT go in there so easily.

Result: your post is “too hard” for “your user base”.

Nothing wrong, sir. You did the right way as OP. But most bitcointalk members may don't really understand about it, so it is better to have an introduction or a simple explanation at the beginning of your thread, as @HBKMusiK stated above. Or you can give links to some articles/videos describing those 3 major upgrades of Bitcoin. IMO

the topic that you make is too difficult to understand maybe some people who already understand about bitcoin or about the topic you are talking about might be just a little, legendary, hero, sr member, just many don't understand, I don't mind if you say I am one of them

Well that is why I wanted to start these discussion topics. It is really up to us to determine the content on that board ( and the moderators of course). If nobody starts any decent topic discussions, then of course there won't be any decent threads on the board. Also, if members don't take an active part in such discussions, then they will just drop away.

I don't visit the local boards, as I am primarily an English speaker, but from reading various posts, I'm starting to get the feeling taht the best discussions tend to be on the local boards. The only explanation for this that I can think of is that the English boards are clogged with spam, and this discourages decent discussions. Inappropriate moderation can make this situation worse.

With regards to the comments that the topic is too complex - These are important changes to Bitcoin, and I believe that they will improve the system. Because of this, we should all try to gain at least a basic understanding of the improvements.

Jet Cash, you didn’t do anything wrong. It’s a thread suited to tech gifted posters to be honest & I don’t think there are all that many here these days.

I’ve been heavily invested financially & emotionally in bitcoin for many years now but I’m far from a techie. I very rarely get involved in threads like the one you made there for a number of reasons, primarily that I don’t understand a lot of it & I don’t want to make myself look stupid.

I’m proud to be have been able to keep my bitcoin’s safe, secure & offline let alone start trying to understand highly strung tech stuff.

The reason not many people get involved in threads like the one you made is because the majority of posters here aren’t even as tech minded as me, let alone able to understand blockchain development etc.

Take a look around mate, the quality of poster here is lower than I’ve seen it in 6 years.
You’d get more interaction if you made a thread giving away 1 Merit

Pretty much this... Historically, I found the Bitcoin Discussion board was basically a cesspool of megathreads "discussing" useless topics that are of zero value... "When moon?"... "How did you get interested in Bitcoin?".. "how tell friends about Bitcoin?"... "Is trading easy/profitable/best way to make money?"... "Is gambling easy/profitable/best way to make money?"... Etc etc etc

They all basically end up with quote pyramids, "good project" or "I concur" or "I like Ferraris but also VW but I think Ferrari is better because it is not VW" type posts that people spam over and over to make post counts.

There is no debate or critical thinking (at least there wasn't until you posted that thread!)... So I generally never look in there.

I shall go have a browse when I get a chance.

Well it looks as if the trick is to start the thread, and wait until it drops to page 2 in the index. Then create a promo thread in Meta to gain some interest.

Maybe I should start one for the beginners board.

You did nothing wrong with that thread... It's just that not many people are familiar with the technical side of bitcoin... I clicked on the links which @Jackg shared turns out there were some terms ^{( E.G P2SH, MAST )} in the article which I wasn't familiar with as I never understood the technical side of things ^{( or let's just say I never bothered to learn about them )}. Anyway one of my new year's resolution was to learn the technical side of things I saw that themoneymongers website had a crash course on Bitcoin, I signed up for it but turns out it isn't technical enough but they do have some useful articles... E.G I now know what P2SH means, what are UTXOs and What Language the Bitcoin is programmed on. There is no point in me by just replying thanks for sharing the articles I'm reading more about it. It just adds up the spam...

Meh, pretty much that...sadly nobody realizes that.

I think members of this forum also need to realize that not everyone is tech-oriented but that should not repel them from a certain thread. Sometimes reading replies made by some users can give them an idea of the topic being discussed, even if they may feel bored. Each of us come from a different background and this is normal to happen.

As an ex mainframe systems programmer, I've always thought of myself as a computer techie, but I am so out of date, that I need to realise that it is no longer true. Understanding the function of system interrupts might be great if you are writing anti-virus software, but it doesn't help if you are trying to build a 3-D graphics image. My early exposure to micro-computers was with devices like the Adds System 70 running a special purpose OS so that it emulated an IBM 3780. Totally useless experience these days, except to make post like this of course.

Myself lacking from the technical knowledge of cryptos so I never post on a thread where I am nothing to say but I love to read those threads and wants to increase my knowledge more in the way I can.

Yes, most of the crypto community members are infants even if they are techie on other things since blockchain is fairly undiscovered by people for a very long time.

People are lazy that is why Tesla is manufacturing self-driving and autopilot cars.

I think that's exactly the reason why Jet Cash's thread hasn't sparked the level of discussion he'd hoped for.  Bitcoin Discussion is basically just a spam trap, and it's almost as bad as Altcoin Discussion (but not quite).  If the thread title isn't an easy "question" to respond to with a cookie-cutter response, it'll get ignored.

I've had the same issue with some of my threads from last year, but I pretty much knew why I wasn't getting a lot of intelligent responses.  I might have made my threads self-moderated, too, but I can't remember.

The problem is that most of the users have no idea about code and cryptography. Nor about BIPs or network upgrades / improvements. Ask  for example, how many know what represents "sat/WU".

More sad is that many don't care, as you already said. And that's because people are driven by greed, not by the precious gifts given by Bitcoin: privacy in their lives and freedom from governs' oppression.

I also highlighted this sad way of thinking in a personal topic, here and here. Sadly, very few understood what I meant and I abandoned the idea of keeping posting there.

I tend not to read threads about the value of Bitcoin. People just seem to focus on the price relative to the US dollar, and they don't realise that the difference could be caused by the dollar dropping against the price of Bitcoin. Obviously this refers to the long term trend, and not to the short term volatility of either.

i disagree. the reason is not the board, the reason is the subject itself. something this technical and not to mention NEW is bound to get very little number of people posting anything about it. take a look at topics in development and technical discussion board, majority of them don't even reach second page.

i disagree. the reason is not the board, the reason is the subject itself. something this technical and not to mention NEW is bound to get very little number of people posting anything about it. take a look at topics in development and technical discussion board, majority of them don't even reach second page.

it is both .  i hate bitcoin discussion.  one of the worst english boards here.

thread after thread simply design for signature campaigns.

it is really hard to find a good thread there.

op has a good thread 🧵 and it is not an easy thread.

i was with computers since 1974.  i was very shitty at programming but i was very good at ops and translating what a programmer was trying to do to less skilled people.
