Hi all,

I've been doing some extensive searching on the web and am at a loss on how to find a good utility to connect blockchain addresses to one another. Basically, the ideal application would allow me to enter in two addresses and find how many "hops" (if any) there are between one address and another address ("hop" meaning transaction). I would rather not have to pay for it.

Ever since blockchain.com did their "upgrade", I find it much harder to use. Its just uglier looking and not as intuitive as it once was, and I was hoping there was a block explorer out there that could do something closer to what I want than it can. In any case, I'd be most appreciative if you could point me in a direction or two. Thanks!

Uncle Nutildah

Bitcoin addresses contain a checksum, so it is very unlikely that mistyping an address will cause you to lose money.

Basically, the ideal application would allow me to enter in two addresses and find how many "hops" (if any) there are between that address and another address ("hop" meaning transaction).
I recently stumbled upon such a feature (and it took me far too long to find it back):
- On main page we added link to "Bitcoin Path" tool. It's a really cool stuff, that reveals any connections between 2 BTC addresses.
I haven't tested it yet. Starting up Tor now to check Smiley

Quote
Using that tool will help you to check quality of mixing bitcoins.
Note that entering your old and mixed Bitcoin addresses into any third party tool compromises your privacy. You shouldn't tell any service about that connection.

Update: I've tested it, to find the path from my profile address to your profile address. It found a path, but the kids are too wild to thoroughly check it now.

That tool is amazing. Direct link is here: https://learnmeabitcoin.com/tools/path/.
It's better to post the direct link indeed. Thanks.

The best I can suggest is https://www.walletexplorer.com/. It's significantly easier than most other blockchain explorers for attempting to link addresses to one another, but it is not automatic, and will require you to manual search addresses and follow transactions forwards and backwards.

As far as I am aware, any automatic service will cost, and I don't know of any which offer services for individual users. The big ones, such as Chainanalysis, Elliptic, CipherTrace, are targeted at businesses and institutions, and none are forthcoming with the price they charge for their services.

I stand corrected. That tool is amazing. Direct link is here: https://learnmeabitcoin.com/tools/path/. I've used the learnmeabitcoin site for years, but never knew they had this tool available! It's quite a difficult interface initially, but once you realize what it's showing you, it's easy to follow.
The large green circles are addresses.
The small blue circles are transactions.
The grey squares draw your attention to specific outputs on each transaction that link the addresses on either side.
Reading the URLs for each makes it easier to follow.

I will definitely be using this to make sure my different "address sets" which I use are as separate from each other as I think they are (over Tor of course, and directing to intermediary addresses rather than directly to each other). Thanks.

Walletexplorer is automatic in terms of address linking,
When you pasted an address, it will show which wallet it belongs and you can check all of the wallet's addresses by clicking "show wallet addresses".

It automatically include an address to a specific wallet if the address was used together as an input with one of that wallet's address.
Just take note of the latest block update below the page, most of the time, it's delayed.

WalletExplorer has been loading & working pretty slow most of the times during my last few tries too. I get the results I need, but I have to wait a few minutes for pages to finish loading up. With a bit of patience, you'll do it.. unless there are a ton of addresses you wish to link.

Walletexplorer.com works okay, but it's not 100%.  I've used it to check some of my own addresses that all come from the same HD wallet, and it's hit and miss as far as linking them together.  I've even combined a bunch of UTXOs into one output, and it still won't link one or more of my addresses to that wallet.  It's a pretty handy tool, but certainly not infallible.

I've been thinking a tool like that would be quite helpful, that's great.  I'll have to play around with it next time I'm in the need.

Ever since blockchain.com did their "upgrade", I find it much harder to use.

Blockchain.com's explorer is the sux.  They're tracking their users with cookies, and IP logs too.  Fuck them, I try to avoid browsing to any of their pages all together.  The one cool feature they used to have, address tags don't appear anymore either.  There's absolutely nothing about their explorer service that is appealing anymore.

I mostly use blockchair.com these days, they have a much better UI, and they're compatible with 12 (and rising) different blockchains, not just bitcoin.

+1 from Blockchair from me. It's my usual go-to explorer. I love the ability to search and filter for specific blocks or transactions by time, fee, inputs, outputs, size, weight, etc., plus all the extra features, graphs, node explorer and stuff like that. Plus they have a dark mode.

I gave up on blockchain.com when it took them a ridiculous amount of time to even recognize SegWit addresses. The fact that they still show the fees inaccurately as per byte rather the correct per vbyte is extra annoying.

@OP I'm just curious on what will you be using the tool/s for? I'm guessing that this will help you ease some time when it comes to discovering and connecting alt accounts in bounty campaigns? Since walletexplorer has been used in the past by scam hunters to connect related wallets before. Or will you be just using it personally?

Maybe that's because the site database wasn't yet updated to the latest blocks where your transactions are included.
As I've said, there's a note below the page that states the last analysed height.
