There are lots of us being victim with this ransomware and exploits
the most popular one is encrypting our files, and asking for payments mostly victims are windows users
i am not attacking windows and promoting linux flavors, but giving advice for safety reasons

Since January windows 7 ended supports for its users making this vulnerable for attacks
my suggestion for those who wants license but can't afford for one , is to switch from windows to linux

there are lots of flavors for linux which you can use and since it has also became user friendly over the years they are now lots of desktops
    • Ubuntu

    • Linux Mint Cinnamon

    • Zorin OS

    • Elementary OS

    • Linux Mint Mate

    • Monjaro Linux

Why i am suggesting this instead of windows?
This OS are faster and not resources grabber or eating lots of resources
Also since they are not windows, they are not prone to virus, but you also need extra care ofcourse there are some virus
although those people don't actually spend more time making for linux, because they are focus on windows
What about softwares they have counterparts in linux every softwares office, and other application
Ive been using ubuntu , CentOS for work , but never got a problem, using it for years now
you can also play games tried it in ubuntu myself
so for those who are wondering try linux ,

    advantages are:
    1. No license
    2. Free other softwares
    3. Faster
    4. Maximize hardware capability
    5. good for developers
    6. can be use as server , firewall, etc
    7. Much better dealing with virus attacks and ransomware

On the other hand we have some disadvantages
    1. since your a windows user will find it in the start hard to use but will get use to it

Again this is just to help us , on minimize risk of attacks, also free licenses since we have issue buying one sometimes , and exploring other OS
also if you worry about wallets you can also install it in this , if you want my suggestion you should try ubuntu first
so thank you and i hope i help everyone photo taken from itsfoss.com/best-linux-beginners

If someone can't afford to pay for a licensed Windows, then he/she probably doesn't have very important things in the computer too.
To Windows fans or anyone else that can't afford a paid Windows and a paid AV, I would recommend to make full backups, periodically.

    5. good for developers
I bet this category is already using Linux, and even on Windows won't get any ransomware infection either.

That's a huge ask! Abandoning windows for Linux because of a potential hack???
And not forgetting that your favorite old apps will not be coming with you and if you are a gamer doesn't this mean quitting your hobby of gaming  Cry

I've been using Windows for about a decade now and I am planning to switch to another Operating System which is similar on how Windows Operates. I am currently using Windows for academic purposes such as writing document in MS Office Products, programming using Dev C++, Photoshop etc. These application are crucial since I am studying Computer Engineering and needed an OS that can handle IDE application and similar products like AutoCAD.

Can anyone suggest a different OS that maintains its user friendly interface and can provide similar function from Windows?

However, is it possible to install two OS in one PC?

For the purpose of using AutoCad, well am sure MacOS can handle this without a doubt.
For alternative operating systems that can run this its best to visit the autocad website to see which OS is supported Smiley

However, is it possible to install two OS in one PC?
Very much possible, the process is called dual booting! For step by step tutorials youtube should be enough to walk you through

MufasaR is right, dual boot is the solution for that.
Either you have 2 hard disk drives or just make some partition just to able to install your two operating systems.

I'm also planning to move in Linux if ever I will have some windows laptop soon and I'll just install some Linux operating system on it instead of windows. Since for now, I am using Mac OS and using it for developing in pretty also awesome, I think it will also differ which field you developing, like you are more on website development or mobile development, etc.

Lastly, self-awareness and education still good, even which OS will you use if you are dumb enough to fall in those some exploits/ransomwares you will still be a victim. I've been using Windows OS for a long time and didn't even try to fall in some exploits.

One who don't want to move to linux just follow my simple instructions doesn't keep logged in your email on your windows from where we receive most kind of hack attacks and also better avoiding ad links while surfing web literally there are spam and scam links at every page on the internet.

For gaming have a different devices, keep dumping everything under same device put you under risk.

On my local board, @LUCKMCFLY brought to our attention an interesting report to read on ransomware. Besides going over ransomware amounts being paid, types and targeted industries (the focus is more corporate than personal), It displays the main attack vectors:

I find that interesting to keep in mind, besides considering whether migrating to another operating system is doable, based on the software one needs to run on his every day chores.

I would add MX Linux to this list. Its a Debian stable based distro featuring the XFCE desktop (just like Manjaro) but with additional tools to ease setting things up. Currently the no.1 choice in Distrowatch.

For a no frills productivity environment, where you need to prioritize stableness vs the bleeding edge, AND when you need to minimize support, MX Linux makes perfect sense. I especially use it when installing to others.

The Ubuntu derivatives tend to be slower (Ubuntu, Mint, Zorin, Elementary) they might look prettier but that needs more ram. In this "looking pretty" camp your list incredibly misses KDE (Plasma?), you should put KDE Neon in there which is like Kubuntu but with up to date KDE packages (its the distro KDE devs promote).

(the focus is more corporate than personal)
I have seen people, most of them from the corporate world that asks for a way to bypass or at least remove the ransomware that affected their PC. So, I can attest that it's true that ransomware attacks most to the corporate PCs.

I remember the time when our professor gave us a project about downloading an OS that we want except Windows. I think the one that I've used before is Ubuntu. I'm still not aware of its interface and even the terminal looks hard to use but this is also a good way to learn other OS. Prevention is still better than cure, avoid downloading from unknown sources because most of these ransomware/malware comes from there.

I absolutely despised every version of Linux I've ever tried. I wanted to smash my machine up every single time. I'd rather quit computing than use it.

You can run Windows 10 without a licence. It's much less irritating than Windows 7 was. I think all you get in a remind in the bottom right.

As for ransomware, if you don't have everything backed up by now that says more about you than it does about them.

I am still using windows but fully aware all this jacking that are happening and I need to keep up my security but I want to transfer with no issue at all or slowly so I am buying a desktop probably with all the best spec there is and this is where I am going to install linux, a lot of my friends are recommending me to switch and I am going to do that sooner.

there are lots of flavors for linux which you can use and since it has also became user friendly over the years they are now lots of desktops

The Linux is not user friendly and those who are used to windows will find it awkward to use any flavor of Linux. I studied Linux as a part of my Masters but i never used it on my personal system. In our country, the pirated windows are easily avaible along with cracks and hence we can easily use windows 10 without the license.

yes there are lots of users familliar with windows, but using linux  flavors is easy specially if you are just into, browsing and reading creating documents, i think you study the server side, that's cli/terminal, but its good , maybe you have known a lot in linux, but as an alternative and also when it comes to protection, i'll go with linux specially if you can use it without thinking of the license

You should know that Linux is more secure than windows and if you are familiar with Linux, you can store your desktop wallets on Linux more securely than on windows. Most of the Linux versions are free source and cost you nothing as compare to expensive windows. Since Linux is more secure, you will not find them easily effected by Ransomware virus.

It was based from what I have seen on those posts in the past so that's why I've said that I can attest to the statement of ddmr. But you are correct too that mostly, they don't choose whom to attack.

And, not all of the personnels in a company are like that. There is a possibility that they do avail security software and anti-viruses and the one that they'll hire is the only one to manage and monitor it but doesn't have the capacity to fight it back.

However, is it possible to install two OS in one PC?
yes you can I can suggest use ubuntu, den install virtualbox then run windows inside,

I doubt you can run windows application which need 3D/GPU acceleration from VirtualBox. IIRC VirtualBox have limited 3D/GPU acceleration support.
yes you can run windows application on linux just use playonlinux

I use Wine/PlayOnLinux & i know those have good 3D/GPU acceleration, but those aren't part of VirtualBox.
