I wonder is it possible to make a report to moderators more effective in some way, and at the same time save other forum users time to not report already reported posts. So If someone reports some post to a moderator by using "report to moderator" button, that post will be marked as already reported. This would save time for other users, and maybe even to moderators.

I do not know how mods see reports for one post which is reported let's say 20 times? Do one handled report for such post solve all other reports?

What's in my mind is, if the post was already reported maybe the "Report to moderator" button be removed or never be clickable anymore because that has been already reported by another user. Or, make the "Report to moderator" button colored in red indicating that it has been reported.

I do not know how mods see reports for one post which is reported let's say 20 times? Do one handled report for such post solve all other reports?
I guess I have experience with this and I may say, partly yes, I'm not that sure though. So, I've reporting low-value posts and I'm always making sure I get it onto a new tab but I've stumbled that when I report some new tabs that I've never reported yet it always says "This was topic was no longer available" and meaning someone are also reporting those posts I just reported too (not those that has been deleted, because it's possible he did report other posts there that I've reported) it is just a coincidence that the mod was active and those have been deleted. So possible, we have reported some same posts when the mod wasn't active yet and after that, I rushed on to see my report history and its status says "Good".

Though this seems vague still I guess that's the case. Maybe mods will enlighten us about this, anyone?

The Problem is that when only 1 report the post its will be seen as not important.
When more reporting the same post or thread the Moderator or the global Moderators will look more on it i guess!
Also I guess its not Realy a time saving for users , when the report is processed from one mod the others see that and dont have to handle it.

I used to like this idea but now I'm not so sure anymore.

What's in my mind is, if the post was already reported maybe the "Report to moderator" button be removed or never be clickable anymore because that has been already reported by another user. Or, make the "Report to moderator" button colored in red indicating that it has been reported.

That could be a problem if the first report was incorrect or for something minor, and someone later finds the post was plagiarized. Or even if two users report for the same reason like plagiarism, the second one might have a more solid reason/proof, so you probably wouldn't want to discourage additional reports.

And there might be ways to abuse it. Post disguised malware, use an alt to report it as "racism" (or something else that moderators won't act on), other users see it as reported and may not report anymore.

The additional complication factor to consider is what the post is actually reported for. Reports on a given post may be kind of concurrent in time, but different in nature, to the point that both are diverse, correct and add value. Say for example someone reported a post for plagiarism, and another reported, within a reasonable timeframe for including a phishing link.

Giving a visual cue that the posts has recently been reported (i.e. red coloured Report To Moderator button) may deter the second report from being placed. Categorizing reports may help here with the visual cue in mind (i.e. dropdown list of categories before detail), but it would slow down reporting (and someone would have to be able to add categories every now and then).

Does anyone have statistics about the number of posts/topics that have been reported more than once? Maybe this will give us the ability to predict how effective some changes will be.
I do not expect the number to be large, even if there will be more than one reason to report on the topic, some of which may be logical and others that are not correct.
I expect that when any report is treated as correct, the rest of the reports will be automatically turned into good.

Yeah, you are correct on that. I guess we may leave as it is and let the mods handle it.

Another came into my mind and I don't know if this is efficient on the forum itself or not, so here's the thing, on the report page there should be some details that will be shown if the post has been reported (just the reported one) indicating there the comment been sent by the user to the mods, just the comment not revealing the identity of the reporter. Just my two cents or take my latter statement above.

What i remember when i asked the same question some time ago, was that when 1 post is reported few times then is easier for the mods to spot those who have to be handled quickly.
That's why I created the SpamBusters to skip reporting shitposts multiple times and waste the time of the those who were reporting.

In this case, we have 20 reports.

Quote
Do one handled report for such post solve all other reports?
If the solution is to delete the reported post, yes all 20 reports are deleted.
If the solution is to move a topic, the mod must click 20 times on 'handled' after moving the topic.
If the 20 reports are considered bad, the mod must click on 'bad' 20 times.

I like your idea, but hiding the 'report to moderator' button after just one report can be a bit too harsh. Let's put a higher limit: 5 reports by 5 differents users in less than 24 hours and you can't report again. But there will always be 'clever' people to abuse the system (with alt accounts).

-snip- So If someone reports some post to a moderator by using "report to moderator" button, that post will be marked as already reported. -snip-
Yes, it is an effective way to prevent unnecessary or multi reports for a single spam post only. Then, it also makes clear to all members that which spam posts have been reported and which ones are not reported yet.

Does anyone have statistics about the number of posts/topics that have been reported more than once? Maybe this will give us the ability to predict how effective some changes will be. -snip-
I think only staff dan admin who knows about it. Well, it is interesting to know because we can see how many cases of "multi reports" of one spam post happened so far. If it is categorized as a major problem, it is better to revise or add some changes.

It's not a problem needing solving - most reported posts have 1 report only, and if a post is reported more than once it's still usually a low number like 2-5.

I think @malevolent has solved the answer to the question @Lucius. "Report"..

@malevolent is one of the most active mods in the service section, which has a number of reports that must be resolved.
In my opinion what is answered by @malevolent, has solved this problem, maybe.

There is a script (maybe a few actually) which makes life of the reporter much easier. I use it often, you have predefined report scenarios under each post, everywhere in the post history, in the search results, in the recent posts, just everywhere. It opens new tab for esch report and closes the tab automatically after thr report is send. Well, you have to manually click Send Wink

The situation will go like this (as I imagine):
  • User A see a bad post (just in user A's perspective), then report it to moderator
  • User B see that post (does not think it is a bad one), then skip it (not report)
  • User C see that post, and think it is a bad one, then report it to moderator
  • Moderators (themselves) have their specific allocated boards (by the head admins), will do have their own priorities to receive reported posts by the forum's algorithms.
  • Consequently, if 2 or 10 users report the same post, I guess all those 2 or 10 reports will be sent to the same moderator.
  • Lastly, it's the turn of moderator (who received these 2 or 10 reports -for the same post) to scan before and after that post to get the contextual aspect, before handling it.
From the last step, I don't see there are anything wrong for moderators. 10 reporters might send 10 reports for the same posts, with 10 different reasons or at least have 1 or some common reasons. It makes sense, IMO.

The report button (highlighted in Red) is good, but it has its drawback too. The highlighted signal will probably play as a warning or barrier on the others who initially intend to report that post. After seeing signal, they probably will skip (not report it).

Well, you have to manually click Send Wink
You don't. suchmoon initially commented the line of code which will submit the report automatically to let users download it, set it up, and experiment with it, without firing off a bunch of inaccurate reports. Once you have it up and running, if you uncomment the necessary line, it will submit the report and then close the tab automatically all in the background. You never need to leave the thread you are reading.

Open bct-content.js with a text editor, on line 20 delete the "//" before the word "document".

Thanks to everyone for the answers, my idea could generally be declared as bad or unnecessary, although the intention was to make it easier for the moderators in handling reports. Things don't look as bad as they seem in terms of too many reports or too much work that moderators have (based on what was written in this topic).
