What's with the almost 500,000 BTC transaction?  There was (at least) another one of those yesterday.  When I checked bitcoinwatch.com, over 5 million BTC changed hands in 24 hours.  How the hell does about a third of the entire currency circulate in a day?

Tracking those money is pretty fun. One would expect that such big amount of coins is sitting in some cold backup, with private key backed up on many places. However those 0.5mil coins changed hands many times in last few days, looks like it is moving around together with plenty of casual (small-amount) transfers.

It also looks like owner is mining on Eligius or somebody mining on Eligius knows who the owner is, because of this: http://blockexplorer.com/address/14igy7qHESq2uTy7xBZ2hf7aBt2i2m8xic - address is registered on eligius and one of last payout moved to wallet 1Mb5rPL3zeHqx8rd5Xg9jkcxTKSMkKfktb, which was keeping those 0.5mil coins for some time. Very interesting.

Looks like this http://blockexplorer.com/address/1KLahQtqDNAXvrjNyfvgSBtAhwco5ZxLp4 is the place where was such big amount of coins firstly consolidated. 12/06/11.

I'm fairly sure that these ~500000 transactions belong to MtGox. Does anyone remember the 424242.42424242 BTC transaction after the MtGox hack? These coins can be traced back to that one.

OK, if it is known MtGox wallet, then everything is fine. I didn't find any info about it.

Well, it isn't mining directly to this address, but direct transfer from mining address to 500k wallet. So it actually make a lot sense that somebody has been cashing out directly his mining profits.

recently a bug in the wallet encryption was reported.

I guess it caused many people to move their coins to a new wallet, as a safety measure.
