Where is the electrum exe file

I downloaded Electrum 3.3.8 and installed it on my Windows 10 desktop machine. I see my data in %AppData%\Roaming\Electrum directory. I can't find the executable file. I looked in the Program Files and the Program Files (x86) directories and it is not there. I looked on my menu and there is no entry for Electrum. So where is it hidden? I need it to execute the file. Why didn't the installer put an entry into my menu? Is it listed under a different name?

If you install it in the default directory when installing, you can find it at the following path:

C:\Users\MyPC\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Electrum

For some computers, the folders may be different, but they will have common items like Start Menu\Programs\Electrum

Another idea could be that maybe some antivirus contained the installer.
In that case you should look for folders like c:\VTRoot\HarddiskVolume* and what's inside them. There could be a copy of Program Files with everything "installed" there.

I did not change anything during installation

Good thought about the anti-virus. There is no VTRoot

I also did a search of the C: drive for electrum and never found an exe file. It did find the data files.

I think I will re-install with the anti-virus turned off. But it's late and this can wait til tomorrow.

keep in mind that the .exe file name is not electrum.exe instead it has the version number inside of it so if you are searching for exact strings you may not find it unless you specify that. for example with your version the exact name would be electrum-3.3.8.exe

Make sure you didn't download the portable version, check in the Downloads folder. It might be also be there.
Just press Win+R > write: regedit > Enter, right click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER and choose Find, then just write "Electrum" and see what comes out. Pressing F3 will show you the next result. You will find the path if it's installed properly, the antivirus can mess up the installation as well.

Make sure you didn't download the portable version

The portable version creates its data folder under the exe folder, not in %AppData%\Roaming\Electrum (where OP data is located).

Just search for Electrum*.* in your File manager search field and then when you find it, you just drag it to your desktop to create a shortcut to the files location.    Alternatively, you can add it to your start menu, if you are using Windows and if you do not want to start it from a desktop shortcut.

How sure are you that it installed correctly the first time? Could you access the wallet, after you installed it the first time? The anti-virus might have flagged it as a virus, so it might have quarantined it, so just quickly check in the quarantine folder of your AV software.  

Did you download it and then moved it to a new folder or did you leave it in the download folder? Also search for the wallet.dat or whatever you called it, when you saved your wallet.

Just a note here > Electrum creats a default_wallet instead of wallet.dat. Searching only for wallet.dat will not help in this case. Basically searching for Electrum* should be enought and will do the job.

I downloaded the electrum-3.3.8.exe to a specific folder. I installed by running that program. It created the default_wallet and I copied all the words and created a wallet PW. Now it seems that it did not install the executable anywhere else. If I now run the original downloaded exe file, it starts off as if it were installing, but after I give the PW for the wallet, the program GUI opens. That seems strange, but is that the expected behavior?

I did check the registry and the only Electrum file found was the original "installer" which is apparently my executable. It just seems strange.

Seems you downloaded Electrum Standalone Executable where folder and file not inside like portable version. I think it's normal.
You can searching your data: %APPDATA%\Electrum\wallets

Go to \Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Electrum\wallets (or %APPDATA%\Electrum\wallets)

What windows version do you use?

np. No problem what file you are downloaded then use it even you can verified and get it on official electrum https://electrum.org/#download
choose the one that is as comfortable as possible

The three ".exe" that you can download from the official site behave differently.

I'll just list them for you:

• Stand-alone Executable (name: electrum-3.3.8.exe) - as the name implies, it's "stand-alone" and will run as it is without needing to install.
  It will save the data directory (wallets and settings) to the default location %appdata%/electrum.
• Windows Installer (name: electrum-3.3.8-setup.exe) - is an installer, it will install Electrum (and the launcher) to the location that you selected (C:\Program Files (x86)\Electrum by default)
  Just like the stand-alone, it will save the 'data directory' to the default location %appdata%/electrum.
  
• Portable version (name: electrum-3.3.8-portable.exe) - Behaves like the "stand-lone" version but it saves the 'data directory' in the same location where the executable is.
  This version is made for removable disks.

You likely have downloaded the stand-alone version.
