Cutting a long story short , I’ve been asked to do a short talk at my children’s school about Bitcoin. Their IT teacher is very progressive and gets the children involved in a lot of IT projects, like coding and cyber security and one of my kids mentioned Bitcoin and I’ve been asked to do a presentation.
It will be a 10-15 min very informal intro. into Bitcoin with the emphasis at the end to explore the Bitcoin world by themselves and I will recommend reading material and certain websites .
The age group will be 12-13 yr olds.
My query is whether to mention this forum?
Currently I’m thinking not to mention the forum , but if they find it , then so be it .
My thoughts are that the forum would be more suited to 16 + because of these factors
- scams
- trolling
- bad language
- gambling
I’m sure there are or have been many members under 16 and if possible I’d like a bit of feedback . TIA
This is placed in Beginners and Help , possibly Meta may have been better , but I really want some constructive replies please  Smiley

Kids of all ages are on different social networks these days, and this exposes them to the harshness of the internet. If they have the ability to handle that, then they can survive here on bitcointalk. But this varies from individual to individual, so it may be a good idea to include parental guidance for those below the ages of 16.

Some adults (18+) also find it difficult to cope with the forum. It's all down to the individual's cognitive ability. If a kid shows the potential to grow, he or she shouldn't be restricted as a result of their age.

Thanks for the feedback @Upgrade00 , these are kind of my thoughts too . It’s a large grey area and certainly it’s hard to group individuals by age etc . Hopefully it’s a case , where if a younger person takes an interest , they’ll see past a lot of the nonsense.

There’s a legal side to it and also a conceptually suited side. The former will depend on jurisdiction. For example, in the USA children under 13 seem to need parental consent, (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children's_Online_Privacy_Protection_Act), so the age group you are dealing with here would not fit well with forums in general (this will depend on each country’s legislation).

Conceptually, kids with those ages normally lack depth in their expressiveness, and they are likely to come-off here stereotyped as Newbie pajeets than as kids trying to learn. For their sake, I would not recommend mentioning the forum other than by it’s historical context and relation to crypto (i.e. I would not hint them to create an account here).

Top advice - never thought about parental consent !!
Yep- the last thing anyone wants is to have genuinely interested younger people been slated on here for being naive etc

Nowadays internet is available to all. And even parents allow kids to explore internet. Platform's like Bitcoin talk are informative platform and no parent would deny their kid from learning upcoming technology. On the other hand even if parents does not allow, the platform just need Email for signup. A kid can use its parent email id, with or without their permission as there is no email verification set.

How to track all of that. My call is knowledge is open for all. It is all about how you use it.

My call is knowledge is open for all. It is all about how you use it.

If one would go by your rules, you'd send 7 years old kids directly to hardcore porn sites. For knowledge and such.
No.

There's legislation available in various countries.

I’m sure there are or have been many members under 16

Here some are nice, some are scammers.
Some talk nice, some are cursing.
Here people talk about investments, which need certain maturity (do not spend what you don't afford to lose)
Here people talk about gambling, which again needs certain maturity to avoid addiction and over spending.
And yeah, there can be NSFW threads too.

I am with Upgrade00 on the "even 18+" part. If you get kids in here, parental consent is a must. Else you may get into trouble.
You're correct, there may be many under 16 here. But they are not your kids' class and not your "jurisdiction". For the ones you have to be (in a way or another) responsible for, you must be much more careful.

While 4 factors you mentioned exist on most social media, it's worse in this forum due to less strict rules. I would only show this forum for history that sounds entertaining such as 10000 Bitcoin for 2 Pizza (https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=137.0)
Like the way you’re thinking AND kids love pizza ! Don’t want to go into btc price /value too much though  Smiley

This forum is all about gaining knowledge on crypto or crypto-related things and I think there is no harm to gain some knowledge about any new technology if someone is really interested.

This forum is a great source of information, but the children of the age you mentioned are too young in my opinion to be save from a large number of scammers who are unfortunately doing very well here and just waiting for someone like them.

I don't think there's anything wrong with mentioning Bitcointalk(and other Bitcoin communities) really. Just say that Bitcointalk is one of the biggest Bitcoin communities today and leave it at that; I don't think you need to give so much emphasis on it like everyone needs to know the fact that this forum exists.

My opinion is that elementary school children should not learn about something like Bitcoin, they are simply too young for it and cannot legally buy or sell it. Also, what a 12-year-old child should do in this forum, I don't see the logic of getting kids involved in such serious things so early?

I know some will disagree with the above, but for all there is a place and time, children should be left to their childhood, adults to some serious things, and retirees to enjoy well-deserved pensions.

I mostly agree. The only time I think a kid THAT young(12-16) would need to know about bitcoin if that kid likes to trade game currency and items online; while at the same time telling that certain kid about PayPal cashbacks and such and how accepting bitcoin instead is safer. We don't need to shove Bitcoin down their throats. Next thing you know people are teaching 12 years olds about self sovereignty and stuff.

Scams and gambling would be the biggest reasons to not introduce kids to this forum, if even adults often struggle with those and lose their hard-earned money, then what chance do the kids have? Even with fiat there's a ton of scummy people who target kids with apps and games that solicit payments, and kids these days know how to use their payments payment card.

mk4, I don't know from where OP is from, maybe in his country kids have some advanced programs in elementary school, maybe for advanced kids only. However, we should be careful with such things because when you instill in someone an idea, you can never know in which direction it will develop. I think that children of that age should be taught how to protect themselves on the internet, not only from various scams, but also from pedophiles and those who abduct children, as they use the internet as their main platform.

I don't want the OP to think he's doing something wrong, it's just an opinion from my perspective. Times are changing because when I went to elementary school we didn't even have computers, nowadays kids have smartphones and tablets on school benches, maybe we're just thinking old-fashioned?

Thanks for all your replies folks.
I’m a father of 2 and my kids are NOT interested in Bitcoin - I think I’ve bored them to death - lol.

2 points that I want to say

1.I think it’s very important for children to know about Bitcoin, they all know about FIAT and use it daily . They even have pre paid cards that they use - this was unthinkable 10 yrs ago !! Think what Bitcoin could be like in 10 yrs .
2. I personally wouldn’t like them on this forum until they are at a certain age - 16-18 , if they are interested. But I can certainly guide them as I have the experience. On other forums and social media platforms that they use , although we monitor as much as we can , I dread to think some of the stuff that is on the Internet.
Again thanks for all your replies and it really has helped me  Smiley

Do whatever you want, but don't tell them about bounty, how they were profitable in 2017 and how easy it is to earn with it. Otherwise theymos will need to make another "Enhanced newbie restrictions & requirements".

If they find out about bounty, they will probably try to turn bitcointalk into branch of cryptotalk, where every shitpost is paid with 1000sat.

Even with fiat there's a ton of scummy people who target kids with apps and games that solicit payments, and kids these days know how to use their payments payment card.
Those scummy people are taking advantage of that opportunity to deceive kids and exploit their assets because they are aware that they don't have enough knowledge to make wise decisions. Personally, it is much better if we will just recommend the forum on people who are interested on discovering various information about bitcoin. Besides, we can't just introduce it without considering how it will affect the person itself.
