The dual-screen Microsoft Surface Duo running Android was originally expected to launch in the holiday season of this year, but as it turns out, the software giant wants to release it as soon as possible.

A recent report indicates that the Surface Duo could be announced in the spring alongside the Surface Go 2 and the Surface Book 3, with sales likely to start in the summer.

The timing seems right from a business perspective, especially when looking at the Surface Duo spec sheet.

The device will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB RAM and 64GB storage for the base model, but regardless of the configuration, 5G support won’t be offered. This means the Surface Duo will launch without 5G at a time when everyone’s making a big deal about this feature, so many could criticize Microsoft for being late to the party.
"The 5G game"

Samsung launched the first 5G phones last year, and since then, several other companies followed in its footsteps. Apple is projected to unveil 5G iPhones in the fall, so presumably Microsoft wants to release the Surface Duo in the summer to avoid being compared to the new iPhones.

By the looks of things, the work on the Surface Duo is more or less complete, as Microsoft is expected to finalize the software side of the device by April. Surface Duo will launch with Android 10, so with an earlier release date, Microsoft makes its device available before Google announces the next version of Android.

The Surface Duo will launch in limited numbers at first, the report adds, so most likely Microsoft will only allow developers and enthusiasts to purchase it. Pricing information and full availability details aren’t public for the time being, but more should be shared in the coming weeks as we get closer to the rumored summer release date.
