Hey, I'm using the atomic wallet and wanted to know if it is safe. I've read some conflicting ideas on it on this website but those all dated from 6 months ago. So yeah.. safe ? Also is it safe to buy crypto on it ?

If no, what wallet would you recommend ? I'm thinking about the hardware ones, but I'm just afraid to lose it.

I've seen some scam accusations against the wallet before, but even if we put that aside, your coins would still be unsafe. If you get malware, you're done.

I suggest going with a hardware wallet instead (Ledger or Trezor). When you're creating the wallet, you'll be given a seed, which can help you recover your coins in case you lose your device so just make sure to write many copies of that seed and hide them in different places.

My recommendation is get a Ledger Nano S. It has support for most well known coins and tokens, is relatively cheap compared to some other vendors, and their newest model, the Nano X. Hardware wallets offer the best combination of security of funds and ease of use.

If you are looking for a Bitcoin-only wallet, you can also take a look at Electrum. It is a software wallet but it is the safest and best one available, and it doesn't need a full download and sync of the blockchain.
I can't comment on wallets for altcoins since you didn't mention what assets you are planning on storing in your wallet.

What coins do you plan to save on atomic wallet?
If it just a bitcoin use only official wallets that bitcoin.org recommendation but if you are looking for multi coins wallet. Only one wallet for mobile that I know safe as of now.

Have you heard Coinomi wallet? It is the best wallet for bitcoin and altcoins and much Safier than atomic wallet. They also have a desktop wallet but I heard that they have some issues about the desktop wallets. I don't know if they already fix that issue so I don't recommend using the desktop wallet.

You can also check zelcore wallet I'm using this wallet without any issue until now.

But if you are going to save a large amount of coins hardware wallets are the best and safest option as suggested above.

Although they have a Github folder, it not mean that they are safe. There are a lot of things that are not related to the wallet file, so they seem to be trying to gain credibility with the word "open source." Would you trust someone trying to gain trust in these ways?
They use a central exchange, there is no reason to trust them.
So it is dangerous to keep your coins at that wallet.

Also is it safe to buy crypto on it ?

They use Simplex which is used by multiple wallet providers, including Binance with their Trust Wallet. I'd rather buy it directly from exchanges, or if you need to buy it with a debit/credit card, do it from a more reliable source. If something went wrong, things can get ugly quickly.

Hardware wallet (such as Ledger and Trezor) are best option if you don't want to take risks or don't want bother to manage security of your device.

Additionally, most of their repository is forked from another repository without any improvement. I can't even find which repository used to host their wallet source code.

Is the code 100% open source? Some multi-coin wallets' libraries are open source, but their implementations are not.

OP, if it's not fully open source, be careful.

Wallets suggested in Veriphi's list, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aZ1zbaUEzCo9NCctN8-eL2VLIiSdY009tTJvRXDUWEw/htmlview

It's not fully open source. You guessed correctly, it's only a few libraries: https://www.reddit.com/r/atomicwallet/comments/apeyp8/is_atomic_wallet_fully_open_source/

I wouldn't suggest the spreadsheet you shared though. It's a bit misleading and it makes it look like desktop/phone wallets are better than HW wallets.

Quote from: atomicwallet
However, we keep part of our development in secret, in order to protect our users and ourselves from scammy copycats, phishing and bootleg applications.

that is a pretty stupid excuse. scammy copycats, phishing, etc do not need the application to be fully open source to scam people. they can still scam them all the same by only knowing the name of the wallet application and nothing more!

Veriphi's representative have already said, and clarified, that the review was for Trezor/Ledger online platforms, not the hardware wallets.

Plus this is in the spreadsheet.

You have to understand something. All hot wallets include some risks. There is no %100 secure hot wallet. This rule valid for Atomic wallet and all others (Trust, Enjin, Huobi, Coinbase etc.)
So as I always say, hot wallets can be used for a certain period of time. But they are not reliable for long-term use. Atomic wallet has never had a security problem. But no one can guarantee that there will be no tomorrow.
Hardware wallets are usually safer than hot wallets. So you can prefer to use hardware wallets.

first of all, "hot wallet" is usually referred to a desktop wallet or mobile that can connect to the internet which means "Coinbase" can not be categorized among them. not to mention that when you use Coinbase you have no control over your private keys which makes it completely different from other wallets.
secondly it is not about whether the wallet (Atomic wallet in this case) had any security problems in the past. it is about how safe it is in general, whether it is completely open source and could be trusted, whether the released binaries are actually built from the same source code or something else!

OP wanted a wallet review. Your argument deserves its own topic. Of course nothing is as secure as cold storage. Although, it's only as secure as your OPSEC.

I mean Coinbase wallet app there, not exchange wallet. So it is a completely hot wallet that you can use it when you are online.
And I have no technical information about Atomic wallet. And I didn't comment on its safety. I just reminded that there was no problem yet with Atomic wallet.

If you mean this one (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coinbase.android), then there's no difference since there's no option to obtain private key/seed and you're required to sign up.

Yes it is a safe and secure wallet. I am pretty sure with that. It's been operating for more than 2 years already. It's widely-used, tried and tested.

Atomic is a great crypto wallet. I've been using it for a while and haven't noticed any security issues.

One of you has all his posts about atomicwallet and the other woke up from a long period of inactivity (last post in 2018) Roll Eyes You're just making your product lose any credibility it had.
