Hello,

Sorry for the rudimentary post, I have little to no idea what I am doing. I have tried to search for similar issues on the forum but I am not sure what I am looking at. If you want to just link me to another forum thread I will be happy to follow the advice.

The issue is that I tried to buy some amount of bitcoin and never received the funds in my wallet. I have been told that the transaction has been completed and I have been given the wallet address (which I think is correct) and the transaction info but I am not really sure how I can use this to verify the transaction.

I am connected to the Electrum server and have updated the software. I can see the 0 mBTC in the bottom left. My history is also completely blank.

Email:

Tell them that the transaction has been completed and here are the blockchain links:
Wallet address
38fNkEUaDBuh7n4TnheLys4fbGtcXEczeE
Transaction hash
5d1359344b71070dfe29aa9aa99d7e4e7ecae82fe3bb3de5ccd4b126e692ce29

I get the feeling that I may have given the wrong wallet address but I am not sure how to check this.

Again sorry for the uneducated post.
Best wishes,
Lazy (Rob)

Transaction hash

This transactions shows up on the blockchain.com block explorer as a Bitcoin Cash transaction. It seems that you have bought Bitcoin Cash by an accident or you were cheated. Where did you buy those coins from?

Ok, that makes sense.

I bought them from https://buy.bitcoin.com/

I don't think I was scammed, maybe lack of information and naivety on my part. I should have done some more research.

Time for me to find out what Bitcoin Cash is and how I can convert to what I need.

Thanks for your response.

How much did you pay?

If it was in the >$6000/BCH range, you were scammed... If it was in the >$200/BCH range you were misleaded but not scammed in the strict sense of the word...

You can exchange your BCH for BTC, but you'll lose value, since exchanging requires you to deposit BCH to the exchange (you'll lose a transaction fee), then exchanging BCH to BTC (you'll lose the exchange fee), the withdrawing the BTC (you'll lose the withdrawal fee).

You should be able to get your coins back using Electron Cash. It's a fork of Electrum which works with the Bitcoin Cash blockchain.

Looking at this transaction, I think he is not fooled, he just confuses BTC and BCH

Since Electron Cash is a fork of Electrum then it should be compatible with the same recovery phrases. Simply import the seed into the Electron Cash and you should be able to access the coins. If it doesn't work for some reason then export the private keys in Electrum ('Wallet -> Private keys -> Export') and recreate the wallet in Electron Cash.

It was not a large amount of cash. Something like £140.

I have Electron Cash downloaded now so should not be too long before I have my money back.

Thanks guys!

Probably back in 10 minutes once I get stuck again but I will try to do some googling before I waste your time.

Ah, no surprise here. I see that they still refer to Bitcoin as Bitcoin Core.
Right
Look at their guide to buy bitcoin.

It says visit our buy bitcoin page and then select whether you want Bitcoin Cash or Bitcoin Core.
And when you visit that page, you see Bitcoin Cash first.
They are saying we have two kinds of bitcoin.
Every newbie visit this website is likely to make such mistake and buy bitcoin cash instead of real bitcoin.

I just searched about owner of the domain.
Till now, I didn't know the owner of bitcoin.com is Roger Ver.
If that's true, what we see in this website is not surprising.

Hey guys, me again Smiley

I have both Electrum and Electron cash running. I tried to create a new wallet using the Electrum seed in Electron Cash but that did not work, in fact, I cannot click 'next' to complete the process as it is greyed out.

I have tried exporting keys (from Electrum to Electron Cash) as CSV and JSON but I cannot get either to work (again the 'next' button is greyed out).

Feel like I am close to sorting this out but my inexperience with these platforms is causing some issues. Does anyone see what the problem might be?

Thanks!

You should export the private key from Electrum instead of the files you made  Roll Eyes From the address you used to get the BCH above
Electrum ('Wallet -> Private keys -> Export') and recreate the wallet in Electron Cash.
Then go to Electron Cash, import the private key that you recieved above.  I think it must works  Wink
EDIT: If it still doesn't work, I'll install Electron Cash to try and guide you  Wink

Can you see the address which you used to receive in your Electrum wallet? If you can, click on that address and get the private key from that address. I guess that's the easiest way for you. Then import it Electrum Cash.

Till now, I didn't know the owner of bitcoin.com is Roger Ver.
If that's true, what we see in this website is not surprising.
It's been a while Roger is misleading people, with the domain it's easier, you know people easily trust the dotcom domain.

There is no need to save anything. You should see a list of addresses. The private keys should be at the right side after 'P2SH:'. There is one more problem, though. Bitcoin Cash does not support SegWit. You have sent your coins to a nested SegWit address which means, as far as I remember, that you won't be able to recover those coins without the help of a miner.

Ok I managed to 'sweep' the keys (no import in Electron cash)  - no inputs found

Is that what I would expect to see because SegWit is not supported?

Thanks

I have no idea. You wouldn't be able to spend those coins anyway. Try contacting btc.com as stated on this website which is related to coin recovery. If they decide to help you then they will charge you a fee. Explain your situation in detail in the e-mail.

By the way, Bitcoin Cash has its own address format now. It looks like btc.com still supports the legacy format. Addresses starting with 3 are also created by multisig wallets which is why they sent the coins.

Yeah, bitcoin.com is a known scam site ran by known scammer Roger Ver. This is part of how he makes his money - tricking newbies like OP in to buying his trash altcoin while thinking they are actually purchasing bitcoin. It is highly deceptive and highly untrustworthy. OP isn't the first and won't be the last to fall victim to this scam, unfortunately.

To OP - is your wallet a multi-signature wallet, some other script, or just a standard "nested segwit" wallet? How did you create it? Depending on if it is or isn't a segwit address depends on how easy or not it will be to recover the coins.

I realise now that it defaults to the other coin so unsuspecting and stupid people (like me) buy without realising the difference.

The wallet is 2FA, script is p2sh.

The wallet is 2FA, script is p2sh.
So you created a 2FA wallet on Electrum from scratch, and went through the process of setting up with Trusted Coin, giving an email address, scanning a QR code with your phone, etc? In that case, you have a multi-sig legacy wallet (as multi-sig segwit wallet addresses begin with "bc1" rather than "3").

You should be able to recover this in Electrum Cash using your seed phrase, but going through the "2FA" options and disabling 2FA when you are prompted to do so.

I think everything you said is correct. My wallet says trusted coin protected and I definitely used a QR code on the Microsoft Authenitcator app on my phone. But on the 'receive' tab the address starts with a 3. Based on your previous comment there seems to be conflicting information as I have the dreaded 3 to indicate that it is not multi-segwit.

I did try to take the seed from Electrum and use it to start a new wallet on Electron Cash earlier, maybe I missed something.

Thanks for all your help people. It may not be solved yet but I am learning!
