Anyone still make crypto tickers?

So there have been a few low(ish) priced crypto tickers over the last few years.

Both of which are no longer around / shipping.

VoltageGoat still is out there but they are a bit different then the standard tickers:

The epaper display was a nice one.

I was curious and Google image search came up with some shops with tickers but not for cheap(ish) prizes and could not find the older lcd1602 versions.
The costs for building a basic ticker with the display you want with a 3d printed case is the way to go it seems.

So looking around there are a lot more open source ones for the RPi then I thought.
I am going to start playing with them now when I have any spare time.
Don't know how good any of them really are, but none look particularly time consuming to set up.

There have been many through the years but none of them stay as long term projects for some reason.
I'm thinking the real problem is cost. By the time you add together all the parts you are probably in the $40+ dollar range for a lot of them.
You can go smaller and cheap like the paper ledger I have in my 1st post but there is no room for any real sort of profit. Or you can go for an RPi build but by the time you add the PI the screen the case etc... it's not cheap before you add your time.

One of the cheap generic RPi 3.5" screens that plug into the GPIO



It's a bit slow due the the fact that it's the oldest Pi out there but so what.
No WiFi but that can be added through a USB adapter.

Works well, if a bit limited. Only pulls data from some coins on Coinbase.

So, if you have the parts or only need to order some of them it's a quick and simple project.
Follow the docs and you can be up and running with it in under 30 minutes to an hour depending on how familiar you are with burning SD cards for the OS / Linux / RPi in general.

Honestly, I've considered building a bedside ticker for a while. Thx for the reco on the repo.

If I were to build I'd probably try to make as wireless as possible; trying to make the valiant effort to see if its possible to power w/ solar, considering the device would be exposed to an open window and would be exposed to sunlight throughout the day. Unsure if that's enough to actually power a PI though. Obviously backup to a integrated battery ofc.

I used it just as a test since I had the parts and didn't have to disassemble anything else to do it.

The 3 and 4 both have built in Wi-Fi so it would not require anything else.

Solar would be tough, you can do 5V 3W easy enough but it's going to probably going to cost some $ to get that and a battery and a setup to make it all work well together.
There are some "survival" solar phone chargers that will do it, but they are big and ugly IMO.

No, not planning to sell anything.
It's all off the shelf parts and installing 1 script on a RPi. There are enough people out there to help anyone install / configure it.
What was looking to do was generate a list that people who want to can take a look at and go "I can do that"

The 24hr data is not working but that could just be me.
The coin choices are limited to 6. BTC, GNT, IOTA,NEO,OMG,VTC
And for some reason it did not work on the old RPi1 I used for the 1st project.

Continuing the quest.

If I ever get the chance and time, I could code something up similar. It's not exactly hard to produce a ticker now-a-days. Can be mostly done with basic HTML/CSS/JS/PHP + an API service like Blockchain.info

I don't know if the RPi has PHP installed by default. So that might be an issue.
You would also need the ability to update if the API changes.
In theory if you wanted to do it all on the server side all you need is something like the coinmarketcap widget

I think using it in a larger screen defeats its purpose and I was able to find a few other 3.5 inch screens with a resolution of 800x480 ^{[recommended resolution for it to display everything normally]} but unfortunately, I couldn't find any for your RPi 1B ^{[still might come in handy for other builders]}:

I have seen those, and some other ones. Will have to order some and play.
I am playing with what is around the office / home. I also figure what is here in terms of parts are the more common ones that people have. The cheap 3.5" and the cheap 5" both of which have the lower resolution.
The better ones in 3.5" and 5" are just not as common out there. And they are not stocked at the local Microcenter so you can't just run in and grab one.

Yes, with the but I would prefer ones that didn't involve making your own frame.
There are enough early gen kindles on eBay that you can say that enough parts are available that anyone who wants one can make it.

I ordered some parts to test a few other ones. Waiting on shipment.
