Merit was not being "abused" here -- that's the mistake you are making.

Perhaps it was given away frivolously, but Vlad isn't a merit source, so who cares?

Correct, I’ve NEVER sold a single merit point.  And rarely have I given away just 1.  It’s the same when I give away coins, it’s usually very generous.  Say something original or funny and odds are you’ll get a big merit reward.

To be honest, even after 2 years of being around, the "rules" are still confusing to me.

If you read the Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules it has no rules regarding the trading of merit, however, there is another pinned topic FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit

It literally states:

Selling merit is disallowed.

Do I think that is a forum rule even though it's not in the rules' topic? YES. Am I 100% right about it? No clue.

As far as I know, merit trading is not forbidden, but discouraged. Please see below a quote of LoyceV

Wrong again, hater.  It’s not what that means, it means I’m not a scammer looking for schemes like selling merit points.  And these guys, Hornetsnest, and Market Magic, I don’t know who they are, but they must have said something that either made me laugh or impressed me in some way so I gave them my merits. 

As for that bet - it is a big deal cause it was a hasty bet I made [and I don’t agree with gambling] about when the bitcoin was coming and it didn’t happen the year I expected so I lost.  I didn’t know the guy Jake, or whatever his name was, he was just a random guy in a chat room and on a different continent and I had to borrow money at the time to pay him.  I did a difficult thing, I paid the bet, cause it was the correct thing to do.
