A Ukrainian top university offering a course on Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies

I am currently doing my Master's program in one of the best universities in Ukraine. Now that the country is on the lockdown due to COVID-19, more and more courses are moving online, especially to our university's online learning platform. So I was minding my own business and checking out the materials on the course I am taking, when I decided to take a look at some other courses available on the platform. And among them, I surprisingly found this course called 'The basics and Blockchain and cryptocurrencies' for 3-year Bachelor's program students. I'm attaching a photo as a proof, but it's in Ukrainian, of course. Just so I can tell you more, I enrolled in the course to see the overview (system bug doesn't allow taking a look at what they're studying without enrolling).
Here's a list of topics they cover: Decentralized databases, attacks on Bitcoin, consensus type, crypto exchanges, functions of money and cryptocurrencies, cryptocurrency types and trading basics. So the course is definitely pro-crypto, and let me reiterate that it's a part of a Bachelor's program in Computer sciences in one of the most popular universities in my country (National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy), so it's pretty cool!

Huh, that's pretty cool. I wonder if KPI or Schevchenko's do the same. Since you are taking this course, can you tell if it's more focused on crypto or on blockchain? I'm hoping that it's focused on crypto, especially Bitcoin, since it's far more practical than "blockchain technology". And since this course is only about the basics, are there any other courses that go in-depth?

It does have amazing courses related to cryptocurrencies and at the same time it is free , you can learn ,pass tests and at the same time you can even ask questions on the board and the courses are sponsored by very reputed Universities all around the world.

You can even get your certificate on edx. ( That would be paid though )

But never hurts to gain knowledge.

Well, being a top university all over Ukraine, I suppose the screening process for lecturers and/or professors and whatever curriculum they propose are never below standard. The university must have experts hired before opening such course for interested students. Any teaching staff and subjects must have duly passed the stringent scrutiny of the specific college or department this course falls under before finally approved by the university itself.

Is it really a better alternative then self-education or some decent online courses?

Although online resources are really vast, I believe it is always best to learn alongside someone who's an expert and who will guide you along the way. Self-education could also be done while undergoing a more structured learning process. And, of course, it is hard to tell which online course or material is legit, more effective, complete, and so on all by yourself. 


The academe is indeed fast adapting to the latest technological developments. This must not be too surprising considering that the university is among the leading educational institution in the country.

By the way, just last year, I was also surprised when a group of young teenagers from a university in one of the leading cities in my country making the news for winning silver in the International Blockchain Olympiad (IBCOL). They were able to create "a way to detect and stop the spread of counterfeit drugs" using blockchain.^[1]

Yes, they definitely have Blockchain course in KPI
I know professor who is teaching a course there - Anton Kobrynets, he is also founder of one crypto-startup and organizer of one of the blockchain conferences in Kyiv.

This is very cool, such courses are now very popular and it is good that more and more countries are adding them to their programs. This shows how cryptocurrencies are becoming popular and necessary throughout the world.

Thanks! I am sorry, I guess I did not clarify it enough in the post, but I am not going to take the course. I am a Master's student while this course is for those receiving their Bachelor's. Plus, I'm a Philosophy major, so I can't really take it (it's not allowed by our educational system and I most likely lack some background)  
I enrolled for, like, a few minutes to see some content, but then I unenrolled because it's just not how it works in my country.
As for courses by KPI and Schevchenko, I tried to find something similar but couldn't. I did find a thesis and a couple of Ukrainian academic articles on cryptos and blockchain, but it's not the same.
And honestly, I don't know anything in detail about this course, but judging from the list of the topics of the lectures, it's more focused on Bitcoin than on blockchain.

It's hard to answer this question because while this official course indeed means that there would not be a random person teaching it (at a minimum, it's a person with a Ph.D. in Computer Sciences), but at the same time Ukraine is far behind the best countries when it comes to education, so in this sense, some online courses might be better. But it's definitely not going to some scammer or something ridiculous since this university is pretty good (for Ukraine, at least).

Not surprising at all as blockchain is emerging nowadays, this has been a discussion for about a year now whether school should start offering this kind of program in college for those who wants to pursue a career in blockchain industry. It is not the first school I have seen that is offering the said program, I have already seen it with MIT ( well not surprising for world's top university lol) and RMIT located in Australia. Definitely this is a win for all of us, world is taking blockchain into a whole new different level, innovation is the key and cryptocurrencies will have a good image.

Wow that's great.Having a degree course on Blockchain andCryptocurrency is really a great idea and a big help to all student to learn and have more knowledge about it. Also it well spread the information about cryptocurrency. Hoping that not only in Ukrain but also in all countries so that many people well become aware about cryptocurrency.

Wow, that's really good to know. Courses on Blockchain are really emerging these days.
Recently I had also heard that one of the universities in China had released a course on Blockchain.
If more such courses are emerged in such reputed universities then people will start becoming more aware of blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

Wow! This is so great that a university has taken it upon itself to expose blockchain technology to its students. It would have been great to see all countries doing something like this or in a similar way because I feel that the blockchain technology has several use cases that can be tapped into. All these will be unearth once more research is directed into it.

A great course. You get some lessons on cryptocurrency and cryptography in general plus you get a bit of economics on the side, which IMO is good considering that you are dealing with a disruptive technology involving economics. Most degrees concerning blockchain and crypto don't integrate the basics of economics on their curriculum, so I must say that this one is a well-thought course description and what students actually should expect re: bitcoin and other crypto.

I'm a "mature" student now, approaching middle life and only a few years back signed up for my first degree (I'm one semester + a thesis away from graduating now) long distance. Was prepared to pay top dollar as the course was rather specialised and the only one available long distance, but the cost still floored me -- had to stretch it out over 4 years just to pay in batches.

I will be so glad to be done, studying had never been my strong suit, but yeah, since last year I've been tempted to take a degree as well here. More for vanity than anything else, but my choice has always been University of Nicosia =)

That's great. Wish our university also take some step like that. Blockchain is the most useful technology discovered by human in decade. Many country already assume that in the future blockchain industry will rule the world so it's important to know about what it is, how it'll change the world and how it'll help in human life. It's really a smart move for your university. Couple of years ago i heard about in USA many college already start to teach their students about bitcoin/blockchain. Now i can see it's spreading strongly in the hole world.

I surely don't understand it because I am not Ukrainian but apparently a course just like this is a true breakthrough for people to surely understand the blockchain and cryptocurrencies because I have known many in my country that are very scared of cryptocurrency especially hearing the word Bitcoin they would immediately think it as a networking kind of business so I am quite happy hearing this kind of online school was available at your country, well if you could show more image on what kind of things you have learned from it I would surely much appreciate it.

As our technology is advancing from time to time, it is possible for people to promote and help adaptation of blockchain technology in their country not only Ukraine. But it is a good start for the student who are engaging in the technology to explore more about the benefits of blockchain technology in our society by pursuing the course. Probably, that's not the only thing that they can implement related to blockchain, they should also implement online games related blockchain technology.

China is always the first one to make this things up, as they have a great economy and their technology is advanced compared to other country although their population is the largest, they can still manage to make their technology on track. I'm pretty sure that China is very well prepared as they are focusing on global advancement and it is good that they are the one who first moved about implementing blockchain technology as a course for students who are intersted with that.

If more such courses are emerged in such reputed universities then people will start becoming more aware of blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

It will also help our global economic advancement to happen, the only problem here is that some of the government are still not that knowledgeable about the benefits of making blockchain technology legal in their country. They don't know that it is the key on how the economy will grow in a certain country as they try to learn how things work with blockchain technology.

That's great,even though I don't like the conventional education system.
I've wasted 4 years of my life,studying economy and finance in the second best university in my country(I live in the European union). It was a waste of time and I didn't learn anything new.
I don't know how good the Ukrainian universities are,but I would prefer a free online course about blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies,rather than going to lectures and paying for expensive education.
I don't believe that a university in my country would ever start a Blockchain education program.
