I noticed a lot of people immediately post a "Reserved" reply after submitting a new topic. What is the purpose of that?

And also since there are a limit character on 1 post

AFAIK it's 64,000 characters. I tested it recently and it hasn't changed.

If the topic starters think the thread is need update and very long, he should post reserve

Isn't that what the edit function is for? Why avoid editing the original post?

Yeah it is, however for some authors they preferred a segregate post for another update for the topic they first posted. For example: On a campaign, they usually tend to give follow up news or put some valuable information on that "reserved post" leaving the original one untouched. Why its sometimes hard to edit or add some coded paragraphs or images to a set up post or ann thread. That's only in my opinion. Or they just wanted to make a neat OP. Why so concern about this anyway?

If you notice, it's usually done as the first reply (or first couple of replies to the original thread). This way, the author reserves a spot at the top of the thread for updates and announcements.
Everyone may not go through the OP multiple times looking for little changes, the reserves spot can be used for this

It can also be used by people applying for a service like a signature campaign. They may not have all the requirements for the application format, so they post a reply to reserve a top spot while they fetch them.
This is not so important as not many managers use the 'first come, first serve' method.

In some cases its important to keep to old thread unedited for visitors and need extra space to give regular updates. By using reserve space thread creator can give regular updates without editing main thread.

Scam busters will look at the edit date of information such as bitcoin addresses or instructions.  By simply not editing the post with that info, you can avoid accusations of wrong doing.   Similarly, when a post has been edited (or deleted) months/years after, there is a good chance the person is trying to bury something.
