Maybe the title is a bit misleading, but NY Gov Cuomo has ordered that everyone in NY when in public (when unable to follow social distancing guidelines) must wear a mask. This is going to be pretty common on public transportation, grocery stores, some work environments, etc.

NY is getting stricter and stricter with their measures, for good reason, as they're the state that has been hit the hardest when it comes to the coronavirus. Let me know what you guys think about this.

Good call, way too late. Unfortunately the CDC flipflopping with its recommendations and the shortage of proper masks has made a huge mess of this. How the fuck we can make a $1000 iPhone for everyone but not a $10 pack of disposable masks is beyond me.

I agree with this being the right call though, best way to limit the spread.

I'm assuming the lack of production is because there never really was a demand for this sort of thing. While this is a horrible thing to happen to the country and the world, as many are going to die. The good thing that is going to come out of this is that the government should invest in having equipment in reserves for this sort of thing. Pretty much me pointing back to the Bill Gates talk on pandemics (https://www.ted.com/talks/bill_gates_the_next_outbreak_we_re_not_ready?language=dz) which was right after the Ebola crisis about how we weren't ready.

Would be great if NY could be providing them to people who can't have them or something like that, though I guess the best thing is to just make your own with a piece of cloth / shirt / etc.

the best thing is to just make your own with a piece of cloth / shirt / etc.

Options for people who are all thumbs when it comes to sewing:

1) Use a stapler. May need some cardboard under the fabric so that staples don't get ripped out.
2) Buy a mask on Etsy - not particularly cheap or quick since it's manual labor + shipping but you're supporting the economy.
3) Or just use a scarf or anything really that you can wrap around your face.

The government should be implementing guidelines and recommendations, not mandates. Any mandates in regard to this situation are not within their powers under the constitution, and are simply a way to train the chattel property to obey commands, regardless of their legal powers to do so. This is just a tool for power hungry people to dictate how people live their lives. That said, wearing masks is probably a good idea, but that doesn't mean the government should, or does have the authority to mandate it.

but remember folks
if your the type of person that is quick to put on a mask and then keeps touching face to adjust it every few minutes.. you are defeating the point of wearing it

if your the type of person that is quick to put on a mask and then think your instantly immortal and able to do everything you used to do last year.. your defeating the point of it.

the point is limit what you touch. wash hands after touching random things. dont touch your face. stay at a distance
the mask is not to replace any of that advice. its in addition to.

I see most people just using a scarf or shirt or something like that. Surgeon General put out a video showing people how to make their own mask: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPx1yqvJgf4 (Scarf/T-Shirt, and rubberbands) Seems simple enough. I wouldn't buy anything off Etsy personally, not a fan of having anything shipped to me now + it'll take too long to arrive.

Think of it this way: if you have a reusable mask you will need to disinfect it every day anyway, so disinfecting it upon receipt is no different in terms of risk.

Lead time is a bummer. But still I'll take anything shipped over going to a store in person. Non-essentials go into a "quarantine" in my garage for 3-5 days. Essentials get bleached/washed/cooked.

@squatz1 in my personal opinion it’s a good move, but a very late move as these orders should have been implemented days ago.

Good call, way too late. Unfortunately the CDC flipflopping with its recommendations and the shortage of proper masks has made a huge mess of this. How the fuck we can make a $1000 iPhone for everyone but not a $10 pack of disposable masks is beyond me.

@suchmoon did you really expect those corporates to make a mask where’s there’s no profit for them, because I had zero expectations from them. @squatz New York governor kept pleading for ventilators and even Trump signalled to corporates to make it, but when they failed to voluntarily make it he forced them to make it.

The government should be implementing guidelines and recommendations, not mandates. Any mandates in regard to this situation are not within their powers under the constitution, and are simply a way to train the chattel property to obey commands, regardless of their legal powers to do so. @TECHSHARE while I don’t like governments crossing a line but these are extraordinary times, and we need to support good decisions like these otherwise people will never wear masks and the infection will never stop spreading.

@franky1 you’re absolutely correct mate touching one’s face while wearing a mask is a really bad idea, and I would advise you’ll to carry alcohol based sensitisers whenever you’re out and recommend you’ll to keep washing your hands with it. Also if it’s possible wear gloves, and keep your distance from people, and be safe guys as this political section will really be boring if you’ll get sick, and don’t come to discuss political events out here.

The reason for the mask is to slowdown spreading it to others from you. It will not protect you, that's not the point. The authorities in New York took way too long to understand this. If you understand it, you then know that it isn't that important that you change it, in fact reusing it is better as your garbage would become a bio-hazard otherwise.

Yes, you can infect your own mask and it doesn't matter. The mask isn't there to protect you, its to protect OTHERS, from your saliva. You could nearly achieve the same if you are disciplined enough to not open your mouth (but most people can't). Of course touching is a big no no, put your mask properly at home and don't touch it ever until you return. If it itches endure it, because that touch might actually be bringing the virus in because your hand happened to be in contact with the virus somewhere you didn't even think about it (a door handle, some table, chair, whatever). That's the reason behind the frequent hand washing thing (or gloves, but this also leads to a protocol, it is pointless if you wear them and do the same mistake (touching your mask with contaminated gloves).

Those things are too hard for common people to do which is why its easier to just tell them to stay home and let the virus die by itself. But it isn't happening in those places where people don't stay home.

So, they have enough masks for all those people? I can see even for the health care workers there is not enough PPE equipment in USA so asking everyone to wear mask is the right thing?

I guess so, just not a big fan of having someone else handle goods right now. But I guess you don't have much of a choice when it comes to all of the stuff that I'm getting from the grocery store once a week. God there's been a few cases in my grocery store that forced them to shut down for a few days, so I assume Etsy is probably the least of my concerns.

Shipped stuff has already been "quarantined" inside the box for a few days before getting to your doorstep.

Besides going out is not just a risk for you but a risk for others too if you're an asymptomatic carrier.

So, they have enough masks for all those people? I can see even for the health care workers there is not enough PPE equipment in USA so asking everyone to wear mask is the right thing?

There are no proper (like N95) masks for the general population. They're just saying "wrap your face in anything" basically.

It's strange that they started to require it just now. Situation in New York was bad for few weeks already, it's slow and late reaction.
These masks, especially self-made ones or scarves and bandannas don't protect you much, but probably it's better than nothing.
Interesting what penalties will be for people who don't wear it. If it will be insignificant, probably it won't force people to wear it.

Literally every time rights are stripped, it is under the pretenses of some emergency, and under the pretext of "providing security" in some form. Then magically the "temporary" measures become permanent, and then the next time a disaster rolls around, they take it up another notch, never once taking a step back. Lots of people died to provide these freedoms, and people are handing them over willingly for the illusion of safety. If you are afraid, take measures and be responsible for yourself. Encourage others to take precautions. You don't have a right to strip others of their rights to give yourself the illusion of safety.

Probably NY overstepping their bounds in the name of public safety. I get the motivation but it's not the government's place to enforce a mandatory mask policy. It's the same case with mandatory vaccines. If you want to take advantage of a public service like schools, I'm okay with mandatory vaccines because it seems reasonable. However, that's different than just being out in public.

i think the policy should be social distancing. but if your seen licking random peoples faces/door knobs expect to be named and shamed and dealt with for being stupid. including paying a 'stupidity tax'

im ok with people wanting to protest your right. but if your going to turn up wearing a gun and touching people .. in other words putting other people at harm/risk of harm/threat. expect to pay a 'stupidity tax' aka a fine

and to all those stupid people that want to spit at police or ambulance staff and say 'i hope you get it, you cant touch me' get isolated in a prison cell and pay a stupidity tax

i think the policy should be social distancing. but if your seen licking random peoples faces/door knobs expect to be named and shamed and dealt with for being stupid. including paying a 'stupidity tax'

im ok with people wanting to protest your right. but if your going to turn up wearing a gun and touching people .. in other words putting other people at harm/risk of harm/threat. expect to pay a 'stupidity tax' aka a fine

and to all those stupid people that want to spit at police or ambulance staff and say 'i hope you get it, you cant touch me' get isolated in a prison cell and pay a stupidity tax

its ok to want to do things yourself. but if what you do affects other people. then take responsibility for how it can affect other people. rights DO come with responsibilities

Touching people without permission is assault. Spitting on people is assault. None of these things are inherent or legitimate forms of protest. Wearing a gun is a right. Cute how you tacked that on there.

What will happen to them, who doesnt wear mask in public? Fine or a warning?

It was mentioned that one man was arrested, but not wearing a mask was just one of the reason. Besides this, there is nothing about fines/warnings.
