No one's posted a source to the news so I'll do it:  https://thehackernews.com/2020/04/chrome-cryptocurrency-extensions.html

moral of a story:  This stuff happens all the time. Just stop using Chrome, it's a shitty ass web browser. If you're a Google Chrome fanboy/fangirl who can't live without this browser, don't download cryptocurrency-related apps and extensions no matter how legit they look.

Google has removed 49 cryptocurrency wallet browser extensions after a security researcher discovered they were stealing private keys. These Chrome extensions targeted users of crypto wallets, such as Ledger, Trezor.

What do you think of this move?

Web browser extensions are horrible! I used to have Chrome in my laptop few months back and installed few extensions a well. But after sometime I started getting notification by the internet security software that some extensions are trying to use my laptop resources to mine cryptocurrency. It was something called "pueminer.exe" or something similar to that. I don't remember exactly.

The moment I moved to firefox, life is good! It's great to see Google is taking measures to curb illegal activities finally!

Good move or not, Google finally do something related to the wallet browser extensions. I don't use the extensions on Chrome because I have a bad experience before so I uninstall that extensions. Sometimes the extensions can eat the computer resources become too hot and make the computer become slower. That is why I never use any extensions after that experience.

I am sure they will have removed it for a good reason. To much criminals are trying to do anything to steal bitcoins. So Google is not going to take any risk, and I agree with them.

The move coming from google cleaning their extensions will help crypto supporters, it will lessen the chance of getting scam or doing illegal things unknowingly from their browsers. It's also a good initiatives since its showing benefits for end users, they are already a well known business they
have many reasons to keep their business more profitable by doing what they've seen will be best for their end users.

It's a good initiative taken by google developers because hackers were leveraging on the use of add ons to steal the information of crypto enthusiasts and have access to their funds. I have always had an ill feeling about installing some of these extensions lol...I don't trust the sources and even sometimes hackers are able to send them to chrome store without anybody noticing till they cause havoc. Hence best decision is not to use them at all.

I think that this will not stop scammers from creating alternative extensions aimed at the same goals.
Only a user who thinks with his own head can stop them before installing any extension in his browser, whatever they may be.
Ask yourself - can I do without this extension? If the answer is yes, do not install it.

Really poor attempt as I didn't even see the link when reading the first post.
But, it seems like this will lead to something more interesting than the current topic. An Estonian exchange, no real address, minimum mandatory capital...I give it 3 months before it has a dedicated thread in reputation  Cool

Hello, I am the Founder of NIOC Exchange.
We have a real address you can check in Google (https://g.page/niocexchange?share) and also minimum capital coz of which license is been granted.

Check out the website, to know more: https://www.nioc.exchange

What Google has done in my opinion is a great shock for hacker. And good news for those who are Crypto users or Crypto investor, so Crypto holders who have been hacked will be much more free from hacker, Haker will not be able to do anything without making a big mistake. Ghoogle knows well what to put it in, how many days later if you restart it has not made any profit. And of course every Crypto users, holders, or investors who have a high security wallet need to use.

Google has removed 49 cryptocurrency wallet browser extensions after a security researcher discovered they were stealing private keys. These Chrome extensions targeted users of crypto wallets, such as Ledger, Trezor.

What do you think of this move?

Of course it is really helpful as we can say that we are a little bit safer right now that google are also doing their job by tracking those extensions that were created just to steal the private keys of genuine wallets. If you can drop the 49 crypto currency wallet browsers here, it will be good also so we can avoid them and will exclude them to the wallet that we are going to consider.

Or even the link of this announcement, I just want to read myself this announcement and for me to avoid those extensions as much as possible.

I am reading here.
https://www.zdnet.com/article/exclusive-google-removes-49-chrome-extensions-caught-stealing-crypto-wallet-keys/
But I don't get it.
Don't they have some kind of filter before they could even ask to be an extension of chrome?
This are wallets and money is inside it.
They should really be careful since it will be their name on the front. Google Chrome it is. They are the face and if people are losing their funds it will be chrome who will be hit back.

This is nicely done but ain't it a little bit late to see all of this?
I am using Metamask extension. Guess I should start transferring my ETH to a new one.

Of course it is.
I read the news that it is kinda targeting people that have a lot of crypto. [Source: https://www.techradar.com/news/google-removes-crypto-stealing-chrome-extensions-from-its-web-store]

Google should consider checking also their Play Store, as the said threat actor could make an app there also.
I believe that Meta Mask was removed before there but was reinstated right after anyway.

when some company removes something from one of their platforms we can't really judge it without having more information about what they removed. whether it is Youtube removing videos or google removing browser extensions, or anything else.
people usually jump to conclusions too fast. of course we had a lot of malicious extensions and if the removed ones were among them then it was an excellent move and long overdue.
it is like the Youtube videos, to this day i have not seen any valuable video be removed. only the crappy scam ones are being deleted.

There is a FOMO brewing...

A very good move by Google. They probably received a lot of reports from the combined users of victims and concerned people. Ledger has been reminding their users through their email to be careful of those fake ledger live extensions because they don't support it.

I think the next move of Google is will be the taking down of those ads that's obviously fake and misleading wallets. They should keep an eye on it so that it can lessen the victims.

Right now Google has removed 49 cryptocurrency wallet browser extensions will be bad news for cryptocurrency and many participants of airdrop and bounty campaign, will google recheck again for remove more than 49 cryptocurrency wallet browser extensions on their platform? I think good way if bitcoin and altcoin get positive respond from google.

the right steps to make using chorme safer. Indeed, many phishing extensions that steal user data, especially private keys, are very sensitive. Users of the crypto wallet will lose their assets if the private key is successfully retrieved with the help of the extension.

As chrome users who use third-party extensions must also be vigilant and look for information before installing a secure extension.

Unless there is a concrete source regarding this, I will be alarmed but as of now, I did not even believe that hardware wallet could be associated with chrome extension. because from the time that I am using my Ledger, I couldn't even see my private key because it is protected unless I export it to electrum or other software.

But it is still possible for google to remove wallets that are independent to ledger and trezor especially, if it commits frauds and steals from the people.

With loads of those Chrome browser extension exploits being around for some time now, I guess it's the best thing to do in order to avoid the numbers ramping up in the near future. There are stand-alone wallets that cryptocurrencies already provide, so why not use those instead? One can easily create a browser extension and mask it as something that is related to cryptocurrencies while stealing information and data in the background. It was done in the past countless of times, so it's not far off from happening once more.

It is a quite good movement of the google that they are trying to remove some extension relayed to their corporation that is not legit and authentic today there are a lot of people now are supporting the use of the bitcoin and to encourage them to make more support they need to retain only the cryptocurrency that is really paying some attention to their users and customers because this is the reason why the users want to use those extension and because of earning if they didnt get any payment on these platform they will not trust the platform again and the cryptocurrencu and may cause of spreading the news rapidly that has impact to their earnings too.
