The Challenge: Solve this hash (a bitcoin style wallet password hash) and find the plain text password.

I have decided to stop this challenge after realizing it is "Spammy" in nature.

It's nice and all, and i realise that if you've chosen a strong password the odds of anybody bruteforcing this hash is very, very, very close to 0.

This being said, i'm always a bit sceptical if a newbie enters the forum with an account that can be thrown away in a heartbeat and offers a very big reward for about any task... IF somebody actually succeeds, and by doing so helps you improve your security, what's stopping you from just logging out never to return to bitcointalk using the same account without paying the "winner"? After all, you don't have a reputation you can lose, nobody knows who you are, you're just an anonymous new member that can do whatever he/she wants and walk away without real consequences.

If you offer a reward, it should be helt in escrow by a trusted forum member... At very least you should give proof of funds (altough this is not sufficient imho)

I wouldn't recommend brute forcing, unless you have several powerful rigs at your disposal. Word lists + rules are usually better. And I know my account is "noob" but I have been around a while, albeit with low activity. I've been more involved with mining forums, than bitcoin general.

You'll probably have to provide a wordlist if you want people to use one or suggest how many characters you might have used at the time of creating the password...

A lot of prepwned passwords can also be downloaded and scanned against this but they won't be as good as a wordlist from you op.

Honestly... the cynic in me thinks this is just someone who has managed to steal "aquire" a wallet.dat from somewhere that has "several" BTC showing in it, but they obviously lack the password and sufficient hardware to attempt to crack it and they're just attempting to get someone else to do the heavy lifting to bruteforce the password...

Unless the "reward" is placed into escrow, I'd be inclined to stay well away from this.

Otherwise, go talk to Dave @ https://walletrecoveryservices.com/  They also have a thread here on Bitcointalk. He has a proven track record of helping to recover passwords.

i have seen very similar thing posted on bitcointalk (services board) and also once elsewhere claiming they only have this hash and want it be cracked. there is a good chance that someone is selling this on the internet with the promise of a very high reward inside if they break it.

This a thing, I've seen rewards in the range of 1-20 BTC posted in other forums. Once you have control of the wallet, that user could deduct whatever they want. It's a risk for both parties.

that is assuming there is something to break! if i am right and this is indeed a wallet that is being sold, then it means it is a scam and it contains no coins whatsoever. it certainly is not going to be the first time something like this happens.

No, it's not. The OP isn't really risking anything at all. However, it is a risk for anyone that attempts to waste time and money and resources on this...

The OP has only provided a "hash" that has been extracted from the target wallet.dat file... So, even if you were to "crack" this and discover the password, it is useless to you because you don't have the wallet.dat to be able to use the discovered password.

A middleman could be used to easily solve this issue.

- OP sends the wallet.dat to the middleman
- The cracker sends the password to the middleman
- The middleman unlocks the wallet, sends the 1 BTC to the cracker and the remaining to OP (minus fees).

Everybody gets happy!

Hell with this, I do not think this is try. I think one how has to post such change should give the reward amount to one of the Bitcointalk moderator and then should get permission to post so that at least people have assurance that it is true.

I think I saw the OPs has being offered with a much larger bounty on another site but I cannot be 100% sure so it might be legit which is why I did not report it.
