With the hollywood industry grinding to a halt and offering it's big releases to online streaming services such as disney plus and amazon/netflix instead.
Some have made movies and actually released them to theaters.

Some other film called Phoenix, Oregon Cheesy beat it last week but still an accomplishment in its own right.

yeah it is a funny story, however the theaters  were empty and the tickets were purchased but the sit unfilled.
It is a very good PR stunt, a great way to promote monero for not much money and I guess a way to support independent theater during the pandemic.

I've seen the information in both facebook and twitter so their goal was definitely achieved.

it ain't much but it's honest work

This guy really think out of the box. Because who could have thought about it. Without big budget he achieved great results. He got some good publicity in news media and it was obviously great promotion for Monero. BTW, is it possible to watch this movie online? Cheesy

When the feature-length documentary Monero Means Money topped the charts during the second weekend of April, it grossed just $3,430.

Yikes, the movie industry really is in a slump, isn't it?  Ah well, that's only temporary.  Those Hollywood schmucks will be back to their shenanigans and the cranking out of mediocre (at best) flicks that aren't worth renting.

I wouldn't have thought Monero would be a good subject for a film, given how privacy coins really haven't caught on like a lot of people thought they would--and it mystifies me why that's the case, because I know a lot of crypto users do actually care about privacy and you'd think they'd be going ga-ga over coins like Monero, PIVX, Dash, and a couple of others.  But in any case, I may have to put the Monero movie on my to-watch list.  Seem like it would be interesting.

Does Netflix count as part of the movie industry? There must be a huge gap between cinema and netflix sales.

I believe it is all about people starting to realize how privacy is becoming a real life problem now. Guess we didn't start off this year very well and the headline-hitting Zoom exploits and privacy concerns didn't help at all with anything but creating a lot of people fear these "cyberattacks" from the sci-fi movies quickly becoming a reality.

To me it looks like people are starting to become more open-minded now that we're all staying at home. We just have enough time to check on things we've never studied before. I have never personally heard of this documentary but the trailer got me interested.

Ditto. Also knowing that Monero doesn't even have that much brand recognition compared to Bitcoin, hence significantly less people would be interested in that film, it's quite weird that they went with it. I'd say they'd probably get more publicity(and support from the Bitcoin community) if they created a film about Bitcoin and privacy instead.

For the people interested in the documentary: https://www.communityworkgroup.org/monero-means-money

It's $10 by the way, but I guess I'm fine with paying it as it's for a good cause anyway.

100% of the net revenue from the film (after transaction fees and publicity expenses) will be given to independent theaters shown in the list at checkout. Tampa Theatre will get 100% of net revenue after transaction fees only.

Hollywood movies are needing to turn to these online streaming services to have an audience as the theaters lay empty. Heard sony is going to start their own by the summer.
And yes I have heard of the zoom exploits and draining accounts this way. So privacy is selling point for cryptocurrencies so their timing was just right to release a film (a media exploit on the situation?) about one of the privacy coins.

In this film they tried a little too hard, mostly unrealistic events but you'll get some laughs out of it.

It deserves a try as an interesting movie made for a specific audience. I watched it with great attention.
I can say it's a great work but seems not everybody can watch and understand the crypto through it. It also took the worst example to present crypto [money lundering] which would add more confusions about the technology and its usefulness in real life.

Wow, it's really cool and the situation is indeed very special and advantageous for crypto promotion via films. I've seen a short one on Youtube just recently which I really liked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf97ofTlZhk.

It depends on who you ask. I can tell that the position of people from the cinema industry is that Netflix is and should always be inferior. Cinemas offer the Big Screen experience and they have built up a tight network with other parties in the film industry, so Netflix should always wait after the film got the most of its cinema screenings, and only then it can grab the bits of what's left. However, Netflix and other platforms are gaining more popularity, and the cinema industry has been concerned for a couple of years now, but this quarantine can add a solid plus to streaming platforms vs cinemas.

We live in a new world now and the entertainment industry will have to adapt to the changing world. It might takes years for the governments to allow people to use places like cinemas and areas where people sit in close proximity to each other.

The Movie industry will have to shift it's focus to online streaming services to adapt to government regulations and to protect people from viruses like this. (Places where large amounts of people are concentrated are also a target for terrorists)

I prefer watching movies at home, where I do not have to over pay for Popcorn and drinks and not have to deal with noisy people around me.  Wink

I am not sure but the big studios who are releasing their movies digitally are saying they did a trial for the last one Trolls world tour Cheesy
And according to looper they did quite well distributing their products in this way and will continue to do so for the next batch of new releases along side with their theartrical releases.

In my perspective, the creation of bitcoin would be really a boring movie subject to take it into hands - do they show satoshi coding all the time and speaking up with Hal Finney or sirius through mails and announcing bitcoin? There would be literally no dialogue during conversations between the main leads and it would end up in a failure. But on the other hand, a toxic part of bitcoin history like how DPR and Silk Road came into existence or how Mt.Gox collapsed would probably spice up the TV screens for sure as they have the raw content to be shown to the audience in an interesting and thought provoking manner.

With the hollywood industry grinding to a halt and offering it's big releases to online streaming services such as disney plus and amazon/netflix instead.
Some have made movies and actually released them to theaters.
After 6 months of posting this, we are experiencing a new release strategy of launching the movie both on streaming platforms as well as in theatres at the same time and a new variant of COVID has started plunging the stock markets again but in the current scenario bitcoin stays stronger than ever because of the institutional investors investing in huge numbers. As far as the vaccine helps in reducing the numbers, I think the new variant wouldn't cause so much hassle to the crypto market in general.
