Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Depends on your budget and your goal. You can buy old units (s3/s7/s9/v9) and just take out one or more boards and you will have a miner which is bellow 1kW but will not hash a lot and w/th is really high, but the price of PSU with unit is really low.

Or you could buy T17/S17/S17 Pro/T17+/S17+ and use custom firmware to undervolt and underclock it. This will cost you a lot more per TH, but it will profitable for years if you unserclock it low enough.

I think S17 Pro can go as low as 20w/th (but it will not have high TH). But take that number with grain of salt as I have not tested it yet. Lowest I went is 27 w/th but I want to mine as much as possible right now before halving (so all my units have hard OC), therefore I will have an exact numbers after halving.

You could always buy a super cheap $25 used S9 and make it work downclocked. With Braiins OS you could set up a low powerlimit like 800W or manually lower the speeds and voltages so it produces around 10TH/s.

For the newer ones i guess you can wait to buy used ones with failed hashboards, perhaps running a T17 with a single board would do the trick?

His best bet is a 2 board s15 set on low

it should do 600 watts and 12th

a used m10 set to low with 2 boards will do 700-800watts and 13.5 th

My calculus might be off but wouldn't a S17 PRO 53T on low do around 14TH for 1 board @ 430-ish watts?

yeah but costly.

I did get some s9 hashboard replacement kit gear.

from another asic builder then bit main.

I have done a lot of testing of them.

and have a thread here in hard ware.

I made a lot of one board miners using s9 shells getting 54 to 58 watts a th. quiet and can do 275 watts to 410 watts on a one board build.

the builder has not given me a price for 10,50,100,500 boards.

as I would be willing to get them.

It would be a decent hobby miner at a low cost.

I really like the idea Philip. And picked up bits and pieces of that idea in another thread you were in. Guess my dream machine would be 1-2 S17 Pro hashboards with S17 Pro controller in an S9 frame. Because, correct me if I am wrong, these were the last machines that you could control the speeds and power from factory. And for fun, 1 board from S19 Pro 110 would be 800 - ish for 27.5TH - but can't control it and expensive.

There are many options of how you could get a miner to run at below 1000 Watts, but it all comes down to once's personal needs, you could simply buy an S9 and run 2018 firmware with multi-setting options, at -3TH you will be below the 1kw mark without having to use any custom firmware, but that gear won't be efficient and will probably be losing money if you don't have free power, you could also buy an S19 pro and use a single board on low settings ( not sure if they have it, but I suppose they do) and you will end up about 30th at below 1000w as opposed to 8-9th on the S9, but that will cost you an arm and a leg, so it really depends on what you are trying to do here.

But if i had to answer your question without going into many details and assuming you actually want to make a profit, I would say NO , there aren't any 500-1000Watts miners that can make you any money and actually have a possibility to ROI if you don't have free power.

S17 Pro controller in an S9 frame.

How do you plan on getting an s17 pro board to fit in an S9 frame?

scrap that idea. I guess a small form factor was my angle.

Agree with what everyone else above said.
You are going to be looking at 1 or 2 or even 3 generation out hardware that is tweaked to run at lower speeds.

You also didn't mention where you are located. That matters a bit also. Is it going to be a lot less money for you to obtain older less efficient equipment or can you get slightly newer stuff at a better price.

If a S9 is going to set you back $25 but a S15 is going to cost you $850 then the efficiency difference is moot because the time to pay back that $825 is going to be a killer unless you are looking at free power forever. Because in 18 months the S9 is still going to be able to be sold for $10 to someone and the S15 is going to be the $25 piece of equipment so you have to look at that cost too.

There is also the replacement cost of parts. A S9 / Avalon 8xx or 9xx can run off any any PSU that can supply enough power to the PCIe connectors. The newer ones all use their own power supplies. If it dies you are out even more money.

-Dave

I have built brains 1 and 2 board s9's I sold some in marketplace they are very good.

I recently got 3 custom s9 sized board by another builder they are great and would be exactly what you what

but the builder has yet to contact me about buying 10,50,100,500 boards.

You are best off either buying a pre built custom braiins s9

I am not selling them but these were the threads.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5243761.0

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5160194.0

basically like these.

this is the better board but they have not given me a price for more

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5253561.0

the better boards do 52-59 watts a th

the braiins are about 82 watts

the brains can be 2 boards and will down clock really low

the better boards can be 1 board and are more limited with down clock say freq 400 to freq 550. and 285 to 410 watts.
I don't think I will get the better boards any more.

If you can find a cheap watts miner m10 and set to low it is good.

I have a whatsminer m10 doing 14th and 900 watts about 63 th
