Okay well................
I lost my private key sometime ago, years ago actually; and have been trying to recover it since. Its been 5 years now, and over that time i have tried pretty much everything; within my abilities.
I know what the general response is going to be, and i am not posting to hear the same old dribble frankly. I have reached my point to where im just frustrated, from the people who say they can help; but are just fishing for my information, trying to obtain it under false pretenses. I knew the odds of this occurring were adding up over the years and asking for help, well sadly this has occurred twice but they didnt get it all which i did as a preventive measure. Besides that which i feel alot of angst over... the other point of frustration are the  methods on recovery, some i see no mention of on here; or the few that are discussed which seem to be more advanced beyond my own skill set,  these aspects have pretty much made it impossible for me to resolve.

I have had a few gurus attempt their spin on it to even a major company having their people take a look, .. i never have heard that its not possible, but it requires someone who knows what the hell they are looking at and knows what to do. Seem to me easier said than done in some aspects. That being said, i don't mind hanging over a percentage on a proof of concept model but i wont pay upfront for someone to attempt a recovery when in past instances that has gone wrong. I do know a recovery is possible based on various aspects which i wont disclose in a public forum, yes i do have a few characters to my key, the dat file was lost in a hardware failure event which samsung couldn't recover. I do not have the drives and even if i did they were not spindle so the data was gone. Overall i have PK ranges, K value, pub key, valid output txn, bip creation type, and other aspects which are not publicly available, i might even have the dat from a old old backup the only one actually but is corrupt and could be related to something else. I don't consider that as applicable as its corrupted.  So as you can see most of this was not in the public domain (or at-least not all of it was due to a piece of shit as i eluded too, but i digress).

I have becomes more stressed on this not only due to the years which have passed but recent developments with my wife on needing treatments that insurance does not cover. Hence making it more imperative i resolve this matter. Additionally i am tired of people talking about the account and the worry i have daily on that its going to be taken by someone who isnt acting on my behalf. I dont know if it made any difference but years ago i had claimed this on my taxes the capital gain (and subsequent loss) which occurred before losing access... also i had my attorney submit a letter to the fed and blockchain alike asking it to be reviewed/monitored whatever god dam good that did. Just to clarify a little more this was a company wallet with a few investors whom obviously were upset that access was lost and hence i was sued to pay back funds which i did so, leaving me the only one left with a bag full of coal, i could use a colorful reference which seems more fitting.... Anyways IT has been a very hard 5+ years needless to say and what has occurred recently privately or for that matter the covid matter has exacerbated things...

I don't mind signing NDAs or affidavits asserting ownership and all the rest of it to absolve a person or company from wrong doing. I have done so with others and is a moot point for me due to the details and seriousness of matters i don't need to hide who i am. Anonymity went out the window when the loss occurred.

So long story short, i would like to ask for some help here in whatever way is applicable, dont give me the run of the mill responses as i have tried them and they are aware of my wallet and are trying to come up with something. heh... however doesn't mean i should hold my breathe. As i eluded too there are ways to do it which i would be more than happy to discuss with someone or group who will know wtf im talking about... or can add some insight feedback into how to resolve this. It is worth the time and effort put forth and while i understand people dont work for free, proof of concept is more applicable at this point

Dont take offense that i wont disclose too much in a public forum, why should i so i can subject myself to the wide array of risks or regardless hear assertions/notions which are just insulting to say the least. I have posted in alot of forums over 20 years from stock trading to tech alike, ive modded a few and had huge followings, yet i never have encountered such a semi hostile authoritarian enviroment such as here, i dont know if this has changed in recent months but it has been less than inviting. Im not here for a pissing match or to spar with someone more so i shouldn't be doubted as i see others are for simply asking for help (within reason). I have posted here before over the years and frankly it seems you need to be in the "club" or in the "click" to get any real type of help or taken seriously. This would be my last attempt and outreach in asking for some kind of help, benefit of the doubt if you will, as previous brief requests have gone unanswered or i guess misfiled hence deleted.   (mods if you want to edit my post feel free instead of removing it)

Its not a normal ordeal with someone having zilch and saying help me, so if there is a suggestion or someone who would like to take a crack at it and have a chat i would be more than willing too...granted its not under the guise of helping them-self than someone who genuinely needs it. I had send a pm to a few people here and there but no response which i can understand why; as the stigma is heavy on here, and i haven't wanted to fall into that pool of nonsense.

Overall would i do this again i think its more than clear what my answer would be and want to wake up from this nightmare than have it get worse. I don't believe this was created with the aspect of honest hard working people who by no fault of their own had a event happen and they are basically fawked with no way to remedy the matter. IF so then stoshi was a short sighted and im surprised that the people who are in-charge of this have not implemented something to allow the resolution of matters such as mine.

So please send me a DM or post however the later i wont see where as a msg notification is sent ....i would prefer to discuss it in private anyways due to the trolling and references made ... anyways thanks for taking the time to read this and hope something comes from it.   IF you dont have something to say which will help me as this is a genuine request then please save it for the next person who comes along that has nothing

...  Dont know what else to say so i will just cut it short here.. Thanks again....
Kind Regards...

there are some legit folks who may be able to help. others should chime in with names.

BUT. wait till others vet those persons.

if i get the chance i will try to find a couple trustworthy (so far) persons.

again.. WAIT till others vett them and even then RESEARCH them.

and IGNORE PMs they will almost certainly be scams. only pay attention to public posts as those will be analyzed as to their effectiveness and honesty.

Okay well................
I lost my private key sometime ago, years ago actually; and have been trying to recover it since. Its been 5 years now, and over that time i have tried pretty much everything; within my abilities.

I have to admit that I had to read your post history to try find some relevant information, because everything you wrote in this post is more of a personal story about your current situation, and that does not help anyone who wants to help you on the technical side.

truth be told i have lost 2 keys many years ago, due to a RAID SSD failure which could not be rebuilt and even when i sent the drives to samsung for their review, the data was either missing or scrambled beyond use. I do not have those 2/3 drives anymore nor trust SSD based tech even today. i had established the raid due to a spindle failure back in 2011, and thought i had covered my ass when infact if it was spindle would of had a better chance.. the SSD just made things next to FML WTF ARGH ..etc etc.

I mean i remember some aspects about the keys but not the entire numbers.. i see people comment often on the odds of recovery and i sit here and wonder if they have ever lost their own keys, to where its a constant hinderance in their lives.. I lost 40-60million in current values 78xx btc over 2 accounts - granted i never assumed it would be worth this much but in 2013 it mattered never the less.

With regard to the above, your private keys are lost due SSD failure, data recovery did not help and you do not have those disks anymore? Unfortunately, in these circumstances, I think there is no one who can in any way restore these private keys, regardless of their technical skills. The brute force of private keys is something that is still impossible (at least that's what they claim), and if it were possible then BTC would become totally worthless.

Don't get me wrong, I know I didn't help you, but I didn't want to give you any false hopes - although I would be glad if you could somehow get those coins back in future.

I'm sorry to hear your story and hopefully there is someone with advanced skills out here who could help you with the recovery. As I am not that advanced guy I just talked about and this post is very long;

I'll make a Tl;dr for you to summarize the most essential stuff from your OP:

What happened:
  • A private key has been lost 5 years ago
  • The ".dat" file was lost in a hardware failure; Samsung couldn't recover it and OP does not have the drives anymore

What OP has tried:
  • Working with a major company and others on the recovery

Possible helpful information OP has about the lost wallet right now:
  • It was a company wallet with a few investors
  • Has a few characters of the privkey
  • Has the PK range
  • Has the K value
  • Has the pubkey
  • Has a valid output txn
  • Has the BIP creation type
  • Might have the ".dat" file from an "old old backup" but it's corrupt and could be related to something else
  • Mentioned they have other information that is not publicly available

Other potentially important info:
  • OP thinks a proof-of-concept is more applicable at this point

I'd advise you to move your thread to Bitcoin Technical Support, I think the best people when it comes to the advanced skills & technical side of BTC are over there and less shitposters will visit your thread.

thank you for the tips... ill make sure i do that ...

sorry about my delay here... i had a family member come down with covid so kinda been dealing with that...

as an update... i looked over my backups again (the 20th time) and did find a backup dat to my wallet.... but it being locked and not remembering the password poses an issue now... *Argh*

so one step closer i suppose... a big one at that.... Smiley

Do you have any idea of the password that might have been used? It might be possible to brute force it if there's only a couple of characters missing, and you know the majority of the password. A common program used to recover Bitcoin wallets is BtcRecover

I haven't taken a look at the program in a while so you'd have to either vet the source yourself or consider running it in a isolated environment. You could potentially extract the "mkey" from the backup, and test against that to prevent any malicious attempt on the wallet itself it you don't completely trust the program to target the wallet.

Generally, users have some sort of idea of the password that they used even if it was somewhat random they will remember tadbits of information or at least possible combinations due to muscle memory from accessing the wallet years ago. If this is the case, then try to think back to when you first created the wallet, and try to visualize that scenario ago. Think about the things that could have influenced you in making a password. This all sounds a little crazy, but accessing memory by using certain triggers is quite an effective method.

Any information you can think of. If the password is relatively short then we might have a decent chance at getting access to the wallet by using various different techniques. If the password is relatively long, but you know the majority of the password or have a general idea of it, then that isn't a complete lost cause, because we might be able to look at the patterns that humans tend to follow when making passwords.

Awesome thanks for the input welsh.. and everyone else...  That being said if anyone would like to assist whom would be able to resolve it .. im open for assistance.
i tried recently to find someone which im tired of the double standards or motives... i just would like to get it resolved... so whatever % of the wallet to get it done im open for.

After 7 years of this im tired of the struggle... ive recovered the dat which im worried about trusting the wrong person ... which i think i already have since i am seeing it for sale on the net.  I have contacted the places which do have it and asked for it to be removed and they have done so..  I am so sick of this enviroment where everyone just wants to screw someone else over..

Now i am asking for assistance here .. PM with experience... if anyone vetted can resolve my dat issues..  as if it hasnt been hard enough... jesus christ.
Thank you..
