If you're a linux/Ubuntu n00b... I'd recommend you just download the .appimage file and run Electrum from that...

Basically, download the .appimage from the Electrum website (ONLY download from electrum.org and don't forget to verify the digital signature of your downloaded file!)...

Then goto where you downloaded it in the Ubuntu file manager, right click the .appimage file, select "properties":

Then click on the "Permissions" tab, and tick the box that says "Allow executing file as program":

Close the dialog boxes, and then just double click on the .appimage... Electurm will start up!

+ what does command mean

Briefly, it's the equivalent of Windows command line on Microsoft

Commands are instructions to make it perform a task typed on a terminal or console. When you open a terminal to enter for example
"sudo apt-get install abcd"

This is a command (instruction) to install abcd. Simple as that.
(be careful to not copy-paste commands found on the web if you don't know what exactly it will do)

This article pretty much explains how to install and verify Electrum but for an older version. You just need to update with the latest version given in the Electrum website. But if you are a complete noob, who doesn't know what commands like sudo apt-get install, ls, cd etc do, it's better to follow HCP's guide and then start learning atleast the basic Ubuntu commands.

HCP,

Almost same question but I'm using Lubuntu and it doesn't have the executable tick box. Any suggestions other than not using Lubuntu Smiley ? Thx

I don't know how the LXQt DE exactly looks like, but there should be a drop down menu for Access Control. You need to chose "View, Modify and Execute" for the Owner of that file.

But you can always achieve that via the command line too:
1. Open the terminal (usually something like ALT+CTRL+T)
2. Navigate to the directory where the .AppImage file is located (using cd and the folder it is located in).
3. Add execution permission to that .AppImage by executing chmod 744 filename.AppImage (replace "filename" with the actual filename)

What version of Lubuntu are you using? You must have 18.04 or earlier, as I just fired up a 20.04 VM and it has this:

However, in 18.04 I see that this option is missing:

Just change the "execute" value to "Owner and Group":

Then you should be able to double-click on it and it will prompt you to execute it:

or you can upgrade to 20.04 Wink Tongue
