Is it still possible to discontinue the progress of Epochtalk? And just focus on improving bitcointalk.org?
Just a question and a suggestion; also because most of us already get used to it.
Alghough I know its a big waste if it stopped, but I think it would consume a lot more before we finally have the new forum.

Isn't it pretty much done already (at least most basic features)? theymos said the only thing missing is fixing bugs and polishing the software[1].

After 5 years and a lot of BTC, you want it to be discarded?

Have you at least tried it out on any of the available installations to see where it is at ?

There are some users that contributed however they could with installations, testing, suggestion, bugs, feature parity etc . This is just the tip of the iceberg and dev team is working on them as we speak.

I’m pretty sure that has already been pondered multiple times. Software projects that get delayed well behind an intended schedule may start spinning well off-budget, and evolving requirements on the current running platform pile up to that delay.

What is going to dictate the outcome is the willingness to go ahead (which seems to be there), controlling the budget/scope/managing changes, and the skills of the team currently allocated to the project.

Without there being a specific dire need to migrate platform, I’d say that anything longer than an additional year may be a turning point, and a point in time to reconsider. I’ve seen large projects go down the drain after years of investment with large consultancy firms. It does happen.

Regarding the latter part ^{[improvements in here]}, I don't think running such forum is possible without having to regularly improve some parts of it ^{[regardless of having bugs as its result from time to time]}.
^{- I'm not a coder but I'm sure theymos does a lot of back-end improvements here and from time to time still introduces some new features...}

It is almost finished. The basic is done, now some of us are troubleshooting and bug-reporting until all is done.
Actually today I got the new updates on which I will post in a short time.
So no need to discontinue the project, is more like to fine-tune now and just let it run, the only thing the community can do is to make it a bit more popular.

Epochtalk project is in the final stages. After spending all those millions of dollars and waiting all those years, I don't think it would be wise to give up stop it now just as the harvest is about to happen.

I wish they didn't try to fix what wasn't broken. I suppose there was money earmarked for the project, so they felt like they had to, but doing nothing would have been better than this expensive and time consuming endeavor to create a slightly better looking forum as this forum continues to become less and less relevant.

It's a full forum software package just like you see Simple Machines Forum (SMF) software that bitcointalk and many other forums like bitcoingarden, cryptotalk are using. In Other words, anyone who would want to create their own forum could just use epochtalk to create it.

So with a full software package that could be used by so many comes full responsibility of building and testing for bugs and vulnerabilities hence the very long wait.

We have a great example from 2015 when the forum was hacked and all the password database was for sale on the dark web. And the flaw as in the news feed feature if I remember correctly of course. Such small and simple thing not tested can lead to a major and significant disaster.

Hopefully that the new forum software would be secured so that we can continue with our own.account and not to start all over again especially that earning merits is not that kind if easy to us the members of the forum with no high intellect in terms to cryptocurrency and the forum. Anyway, since the bitcointalk.org forum has been hacked then hopefully it will be a lesson to learn for the admin and the forum devz. And I think bug bounty will definitely be a way for an effective test of the forum database security.

Well I don't see many people testing epochtalk now on coinbistro  for example.
I registered myself with intention to help and even invited all our local board, but we are just few geeks and maybe we need some small bounty now and that would bring more people for sure

I never spent much time paying attention to the new software developments, and the longer I've been a member of this forum the more I've come to believe that the way we have it now is the way it's going to remain in perpetuity.

Well I don't see many people testing epochtalk now on coinbistro  for example.

That might be because people have lost faith that this software upgrade is ever going to happen, or they could just be satisfied with how the forum is right now.  I count myself in the latter category mostly.  The look and feel of bitcointalk might be dated to some folks, but personally I like it and I like consistency in website appearance.

Stack-wise? Most definitely. Looking @ the package.json [1], it seems that they're using AngularJS for their front-end framework, which is already on LTS until 31/12/2021, after which it is no longer supported.

I'm not sure how hard it is to port the codebase over to Angular 2, as I am unaware of the notable differences; but this just goes to show that their dependencies might actually be @ End of Life before it's release, which would be somewhat ironic.

This is the main issue when using package managers.

A user asked about upgrading to Angular 9 or 10 back in April on their github repo. The response from one of the devs was:

As mentioned above we are on the latest version of AngularJS. Once the product reaches a more stable point, we may upgrade to the typescript version of Angular, but at this point and time it does not make sense for us to upgrade.

From what I read hapijs is another framework they use that had some thoughts of switching from open-source to commercial and community volunteers to keep working on the opensource version. Things like this happen...
