Most people will tell you 14-period. That's the default setting. I rarely see anyone use other lookback periods, but it's sometimes done to increase or decrease indicator sensitivity.
Shorter lookbacks can be useful for scalpers and shorter term traders, but keep in mind they produce worse noise-to-signal ratios. For strategies like this, some people recommend using the 10-period:

When they line up, signals tend to be quite strong. For example, 9 and 18-period Chande momentum, or 10 and 14-period RSI.
