Does SMerit expires ?

Some people do not spend their s-merits or are lazy in sending merits to others. So if anyone does not use his smerits, will they ever expire or they just keep on accumulating forever ?

sMerits won't expire. But base on what said on sending merit page, theymos or anyone who's incharge can remove unused smerits for particular reason. And that's why people recommend to send smerits to quality posts because hoarding smerits is nonsense.

I don't know if I'd call it "nonsense" or not, because some members of the forum--and especially the older ones in particular, I think--don't really care a hell of a lot about the merit system.  Unless you really feel the need to "like" a post or want to help lower-ranked members with the merit requirements in order to rank up, it's just a waste of (some) members' time to give out their sMerits.

This has been discussed before in other threads, and I think I recall giving the example of gameristo, who basically only makes posts trying to buy bitcoin in the Currency Exchange section.  He's a member who probably doesn't do a lot of reading here, and that's perfectly acceptable, but he's an example of a member who's likely indifferent to the merit system.  I think he's even got every single one of his airdropped sMerits from 2018.

So some people are very miserly with their sMerits.  That was probably anticipated by Theymos, and might be one of the reasons he made some members merit sources.  They're usually members who believe in the system and want to make it less impossible for Newbies & Jr. Members to rank up.

I can't think of any proper reason of why people will not spent their smerits.  One reason can be jealously as they do not want other members to grow up quickly than themselves and hence do not send any smerit.

That may be the reason for some people for not sending their smerits. It even take me long time to save some smerits and start a merit contest for example. In my own reasoning, it is completely a waste of time and also useless in hoarding smerits and leave it as it is rather than sending it to the users who post constructively.

I doubt that decay of sMerit would have positive effect. If members don't spend their sMerits now, I doubt that decay of sMerit would force them to spend their sMerits more actively.

I don't think it's the reason. I think that some member just don't give a shit about merit system, they don't care about it. And it's very likely that some members simply don't even know about merit system, so this is why they don't spend their sMerit.

The system has been added to encourage quality discussions. May I remind about the fact that before this the forum was flooded with "sir I believe in bitcoin, it's a great project sir and it will go the moon sir". A lot of members were complaining about it in Meta.

jealously? It's the kindergarten here? The Bitcoin Discussion board is a good example to take, it's maybe one of the board with the lowest amount of Smerits received. Why? I'm going to tell you, it's hard to have a decent discussion, people repeat the same thing over and over they just rephrase the post above.
I read some topics with 6-7 pages, on the 7th I don't even remember what the original post was about lol. I'm not at all inclined to reward anything in such a conversation.

It's harder for shitposters in Development & Technical Discussion or Bitcoin Technical Support because either you know what you're talking about or you just shut up. Yet I see a decent amount of Smerits received in.

They will not expire but holding smerits are really disappointing and it will discourage other users to make constructive posts.Because when an user creating best posts with hard work and not getting any merit because of holding them he will not get encourage and will start plagiarism.

So I would like to Request all users plz don't hold your smerits and give them who are really working hard and contributing in this forum.

Making a contest for giving away smerit is also not a very good idea unless you have a lot of smeirt to give. You don't need to start a contest to distribute the smerits as if you look around, you will easily find the posts which deserve some attention and merits.

Rules do change. I knew that smerits didn't expire when they first came into being but the reason was to ask if there is any expiry of smerit introduced after few years of its implementation, the result seems to be No.
