Karpeles wanted a no questions asked bailout from the bitcoin community over the (comparatively small, maybe $20,000,000 to $100,000,000 worth of) liability he had that exceeded the amount of bitcoin gox had on deposit. He probably has a borderline personality, did not like the ridicule and lack of help and then figured that if he was not going to get bailed out then bitcoin would go down in flames as well. He probably did not count on bitcoin's resilience and price support from VC's/

Now he is on meds and trying to figure things out, more bitcoin will probably be "found."

That's been my theory for a few weeks, now looks more likely....

If Mark doesn't end up in jail, he'll be assassinated. Nobody publicly steals $500 million and walks away with it.

In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

What make you think these are exclusive?

I would say, the outcome contains both

What makes you think I think they are exclusive? I didn't say (or exclude) anything about the case where he does end up in jail Wink

But I agree, the ideal (and probably the most likely) outcome would involve both.

If Mark is working for "deep-cover" Feds and he gets into a "witness protection" type of program, then he will live comfortably and the spooks will get the $500,000,000.

you got a point there
imagine a guy had just 10k coin ($6mill) in mtgox in previous years. then through a random crime that is not linked, he got sent to prison. blissfully thinking he is sitting on a hidden nestegg of $6mill when he gets released.

now fast forward to last month. using his TV privileges he finds out his nestegg might be gone.. what would he do if he seen karpeles walk into his wing of the same prison........

In America if you steal enough from as many people as possible you often get neither.  Sometimes you get a bonus.

Oh, well, in Italy if you steal enough you usually end up in Parliament.
If you really steal high enough you can even become Prime Minister.

That's usually not enough. You also need to bribe some of the other thieves who sit in Parliament

maybe vice versa? hiding Jupiter behind him?

Anyway, he can be a puppet/scapegoat for all we care. These cases of bitcoin frauds always center around one person, while there could be a whole ring of shady people involved.

Well of course he wanted a bail out. He thought everything revolved around him because of being the first exchanges and being around a long time, plus being on the board of bitcoin foundation.

But yeah, I see your point. All the mined coins or good amount being held by one person.
