So I bought some crypto some years ago, and have used a Nano Ledger S to "protect" them. Now I see the Ledger needs upgrading (current MCU 1.1 and firmware 1.3.1). I have my recovery phrase written down. Are there any things I need to avoid doing when upgrading the Ledger?
I find the instructions on ledger.com confusing. I have tried to use the Ledger Live software without success.
Should I buy a new Nano Ledger, or try to upgrade the old?

As long as your installed Ledger Live is the legit software downloaded from the legit website (https://www.ledger.com/), you should be fine. As far as I can remember, I updated my firmware directly through the Live app - as soon as I plugged in my device, Live asked me if I wanted to update so I only followed the shown steps inside their software.

If you are skeptical about your OS, create a Linux Live USB and install Live on it - you could update your Ledger firmware through Linux too, but in some cases the OS doesn't recognize your Ledger.. in which case it might be needed to modify the udev rules (simply enter the following command in the Terminal):

Code:
wget -q -O - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LedgerHQ/udev-rules/master/add_udev_rules.sh | sudo bash

There was one time my wallet was reset during the update and I had to re-introduce my recovery seed. So keep that copy of your seed safe. Smiley

There is no need for you to buy a new device. What kind of error do you get when you try to connect your device? Does anything happen at all?

When I try to run the "Genuine check" - I unlock the Ledger, but nothing happens. The Ledger Live asks if I have a hard time connecting, and there is a button for "Repair". When I try to follow the "Repair your Ledger device" procedure. It all stops when I try to load the bootloader. The Ledger displays "Bootloader" in the display, but then nothing more happens.

There could be several things causing such a behaviour. Try using a different USB cable or a different PC if it still doesn't work. Also, what version of Ledger Live do you have? You can check it the Settings -> About.

New USB-cable got me a bit futher. Now when I check if the Ledger is Genuine - I power it up, enter PIN. The PC (win10) now gives i pip (like when installing a new usb device). Now the error message in Ledger Live is - "Oops, couldn't connect to device" I have saved the json error file if needed.

BTW - I can not check the version of Ledger Live, but I downloaded the latest version from ledger.com (2.3.2) - there is no "settings" menu in the program. When Ledger Live starts - the heading is "get started with your Ledger device", and I can chose from "Set up a new device", "Restore", "skip device setup" or "don't have a Ledger device". Could the Ledger Live software be fishy?. I downloaded it from ledger.com, and checked the ssl cert on the site.

Could this have to do with the old software (1.3.1)? - That the Ledger Live does not support that old software on the Ledger S?

Try connecting it to a different USB port. You can also try other steps from Ledger support website.

There is a gear icon in the top-right corner which will show you the settings when you click on it. The software itself should be fine.

Could this have to do with the old software (1.3.1)? - That the Ledger Live does not support that old software on the Ledger S?

As far as I know, Ledger Live does not support firmware versions under 1.3.

Great! One more thing before you update. Make sure to uninstall all the apps before updating to the latest version. It is a one time thing and you won't have to do it for the future updates.

As you first tried it on a PC it didn't work on, I suppose it's your main computer so, if you wish, I could try helping you out and solve the problem on it.

Does the upgraded Ledger now work with Ledger Live on the first PC or does it still give the same "Oops, couldn't connect to device" error?

If it gives the same error, have you tried the tips BitCryptex linked you to? Try running Ledger Live on the first computer as an Administrator (right click Ledger Live -> Run as Administrator -> if a window pops up asking whether you'd like running it as an administrator, press Yes), it usually fixed my connection problems.

As long as you still have the seed, there's really nothing to worry about. Grin

Thanks. You are correct - the first PC is my main computer, and now Ledger Live works fine on that PC - without having to run as admin :-)

The only way to lose your funds is to reset your wallet during the firmware update, without having any backup. Given that you've got them and assuming you correctly and in the proper arrangement wrote all 24 words there is no reason to worry.

Ledger has an app through which you can check the correctness of your seed which is definitely a recommendation for everyone to be 100% sure they have the correct backup. It is always important to emphasize that the words from the seed are not entered anywhere except in the device itself.
