I wanted to post here about a new type of game made possible by advancements in Ethereum. It's a play-to-earn game.
The model works like this: sponsors looking to broaden their token distribution donate tokens to a game that then uses the tokens as in-game rewards.
This is a new way of getting new token holders without using the spammy airdrop methods of 2017-2018. Projects can target application users that already have downloaded metamask and own Ethereum!
There are already a few games making use of this model but I think the most interesting is Axie Infinity. They've secured sponsorships from Ethereum giants MakerDAO & Kyber Network!
The play to earn aspect works like this:
The game has an alpha for its application out on Desktop, Android, and IOS (testflight).
You can battle other players in the arena and climb the leaderboard. Top leaderboard spots can earn DAI/KNC but players also have a chance of earning DAI/KNC from each victory.
It's still pretty small and experimental but if this idea can scale, it will revolutionize gaming.
Right now you need to pick up a team of Axies from the player-market (the team does not sell Axies at the moment).
