MJ: Is toning a bad thing in your opinion? I have some graded silvers that have toning. Seems like in the coin collecting industry, it can be a desirable trait.

I prefer natural toning on my coins, gives them eye appeal and some character

Patina is one of the lesser considerations when grading and falls into the overall eye appeal of a coin and is somewhat subjective. A colorful patina will be more desirable than a dark patina. An even patina will be more desirable than a splotchy patina. Patina that is limited to the rim of a coin isn't generally a factor in grading. I have some Lealana Silver Dimes with a purple patina on the rim that you can't see when looking at the face of the coin. Some collectors like coins with an attractive patina or toning. I purposely left my St. Petersburg coin in its original holder just because I wanted to see how far the patina would go and what it would look like. It gives the coin character and it's still in its original case. Patina doesn't impact the strike, the strike on this Casascius looks very good.
