http://rt.com/business/visa-mastercard-russia-sanctions-285/

Many russian customers of "sanctioned" banks are trapped abroad and cannot  access their money.

This is really the precedent. Now we see the power of totalitarian financial authority of the world.

Hey Russia,  it's really time to start using bitcoin, don't you think so?

It is Russia. In another instance I heard www.CoinLearn.org is also getting big traffic from Ukrain. Is it a sign that those people are joining the BTC bandwagon silently ?

Quote
The bank added that its own services relating to Visa and Mastercard cards, like withdrawing cash from the bank’s ATMs works fine.

This would have really screwed Russians traveling abroad.  Hopefully these travelers have money in their accounts and not just debt on their credit cards like most in the US.

It's another point for Bitcoin.

I dont like how Visa and Mastercard are tools of the U.S. government. If I were a shareholder, I would being complaining loudly. Their action is bad for business and will hurt them in the end.

Putin wants to control everything that goes on. It backfired a bit in this case, but I really doubt that will make Russian politicians more open to letting go of control.

This is going to backfire on the Visa / Master. The Russians are not that stupid. In a matter of few months they will dump VISA/ Master all together.

This is abuse from the US government. We had the same with Wikileaks, where hundreds of unrelated businesses on Iceland were harmed. We have also Iran and Syria which are under bank attack, and this boycott is in practise violent, as it deprives the people of those countries from essentials, including food, healthcare and education.

In this era, with extended trade and work specialization (which is necessary to support a large global population), forcibly taking away peoples ability to trade freely is just as bad as killing people and destroying their houses.

Bitcoin can obviously fix parts of this problem, should it become generally used. A separate chinese, renminbi-based international banking system decoupled from the present? Not likely.

Is that related to Crimea? Well if it is just w8 for winter and cold weather to come and Russia cuts off gas, that would be hilarious Wink
