Thousands of physicians in all specialties and from all States would like to express our gratitude for your leadership. We write to you today to express our alarm over the exponentially growing negative health consequences of the national shutdown.

In medical terms, the shutdown was a mass casualty incident.

During a mass casualty incident, victims are immediately triaged to black, red, yellow, or green. The first group, triage level black, includes those who require too many resources to save during a mass crisis. The red group has severe injuries that are survivable with treatment, the yellow group has serious injuries that are not immediately life threatening, and the green group has minor injuries.

The red group receives highest priority. The next priority is to ensure that the other two groups do not deteriorate a level. Decades of research have shown that by strictly following this algorithm, we save the maximum number of lives.

Millions of Americans are already at triage level red. These include 150,000 Americans per month who would have had a new cancer detected through routine screening that hasn’t  happened, millions who have missed routine dental care to fix problems strongly linked to heart disease/death, and preventable cases of stroke, heart attack, and child abuse. Suicide hotline phone calls have increased 600%.

Tens of millions are at triage level yellow. Liquor sales have increased 300-600%, cigarettes sales have increased, rent has gone unpaid, family relationships have become frayed, and millions of well-child check-ups have been missed.

Hundreds of millions are at triage level green. These are people who currently are solvent, but at risk should economic conditions worsen. Poverty and financial uncertainty is closely linked to poor health.

A continued shutdown means hundreds of millions of Americans will downgrade a level. The following are real examples from our practices.

It's a domino of events that are rapidly unfolding. It was clear from the start that any way we take it, the COVID-19 measures will attack us from every side possible. I unfortunately don't have much of a problem financially yet.. yet. But those who were already poor are going into absolute poverty.

The unemployment's only going to get worse in time. Just wait until multinational corporations are going to start cutting off job positions worldwide. If I learned one thing this entire lockdown, it's the fact that no matter how we take it and no matter what we change, the collapse was triggered and it's going to be a long a$$ chain of crappy events we'll have to do our best to resist.

The peaceful protests have turned violent in a matter of minutes and the worst thing is, so many people are angry at the situation overall. At the situation they have to encounter due to lockdowns and unemployment. It's turned into a mixture of race war & their anger.

But when you have no more money to feed your children anymore, you know you have nothing to lose anymore no matter how crazy and psycho you go. When these unemployed citizens start running out of money & food, they'll join the current violent protests. And looking at how many lost their job since the beginning of the year... it doesn't look like good & peaceful times are coming at all.

the dilemma of imposing a "lockdown" on the poor if there is no concern from those who are able to be able to alleviate it so that it does not starve or at best is the state must play a role in this response. prior to enactment aid distribution must be prioritized so that they do not wander around which can actually be dangerous, because if hunger people can do things that are not commendable.

there are good examples that impose lockdowns and they work well because the people according to what the government says and nobody dares to stubborn or fight with dishonorable actions. the country is now free and there are no deaths due to a pandemic.

In Nigeria the lockdown is uplifted in some states like me am in Rivers State (Port Harcourt) the government uplifted the lockdown till further notice but interstate traveling, Hotel's, and bar's are still on a lockdown and for the church services it is limited to 50 persons for a gathering.
