Hi all,

I was just wondering if any of you know how to configure my node to operate both behind a VPN for nodes that I don't know and also over my standard IP address for my own personal devices for SPV.  I believe that operating behind a VPN via port forwarding on my router with port binding in my bitcoin.con as well as simultaneously operating on my own IP address with the same node is possible via whitelisting but I'm not sure of exactly how I would go about it.  Especially since I believe in order to successfully operate behind a VPN you have to bind your node to a particular port in the bitcoin.conf file via port=port_number  .  Is it possible to specify two ports in the same file with one for the VPN and one for the whitelisted in the clear?  Thanks in advance for the help!

I've seen things like this being done by running a raspberry pi with a firewalling software that acts like a proxy server and puts some connections through one way and others through a different but I'm not sure how it'd work in reality.

You'd probably have to allow individual IPs of the nodes you want to allow to connect and the port of the VPN and nothing else, but other nodes will still probably be able to get your IP and work out you're running a node (though traffic analysis) so I don't know if it'd actually gain much...

Thanks I guess I should of clarified but I'm actually running my node on a Windows 10 laptop.  Also, in addition to the original questions,  what about the same question but instead of behind a VPN and in the clear, behind TOR and in the clear?

I'd give a similar response however you could probably try running two instances of the node and only whitelist the first few nodes and block incoming connections for the rest.

Thank you for your input.  Do you know if it's possible to run two nodes on the same laptop using the same blockchain copy? I don't have enough space to run another copy of the blockchain.  Also, how would I go about configuring the node as you mentioned with blocking incoming except for the whitelisted?  I've never whitelisted before.  Thanks again.

You cannot run two instances of the node that points to the same blockchain directory at the same time. Bitcoin isn't designed for that.

Also, how would I go about configuring the node as you mentioned with blocking incoming except for the whitelisted?  I've never whitelisted before.  Thanks again.
If you want to only allow one IP to connect to you, the best way is probably to set up your firewall to only allow that IP to have incoming connections via port 8333.
