I observed recently that on several boards and child boards are mentioned some members as moderators but, in fact, these members are not staff members anymore since a while ago. Therefore, for having a more precise view over the boards and over the mods which are really moderating the respective topic, I'd suggest to make the following updates:

- Bitcoin Discussion \ Press: remove jgarzik from moderators list, as he is not part of the staff anymore; besides, he was last seen online on November 8th, 2019
- Beginners & Help: remove MiningBuddy from moderators list, as he is not part of the staff anymore; besides, he was last seen online on April 4th, 2018
- Development & Technical Discussion \ Wallet software \ Electrum: remove ThomasV from moderators list; although, according to tranthidung's topic List of the forum's admins/ global moderators/ staffs, ThomasV appears as having mod privileges, considering that he was last seen online on March 21st, 2019, most likely he is not moderating this section
- Development & Technical Discussion \ Wallet software \ Bitcoin Wallet for Android: remove Andreas Schildbach from moderators list; although, according to tranthidung's topic List of the forum's admins/ global moderators/ staffs, Andreas Schildbach appears as having mod privileges, considering that he was last seen online on February 13th, 2018, most likely he is not moderating this section
- Development & Technical Discussion \ Wallet software \ BitcoinJ: remove Mike Hearn from moderators list; although, according to tranthidung's topic List of the forum's admins/ global moderators/ staffs, Mike Hearn appears as having mod privileges, considering that he was last seen online on March 29th, 2016, most likely he is not moderating this section
- Development & Technical Discussion \ Wallet software \ Mycelium: remove Rassah from moderators list; although, according to tranthidung's topic List of the forum's admins/ global moderators/ staffs, Rassah appears as having mod privileges, considering that he was last seen online on February 9th, 2020, most likely he is not moderating this section

This just crossed my mind. There are few mods who are in-active and does this mean that these were not a paid job for them? If I am not wrong then mods are getting paid for the work they do, right?

The case of mining buddy has been discussed about it here is one of them
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5120177.

I think things are running in good and shape in those boards
Quote
Theymos probably just forgot to manually remove their names from the sub boards which has happened a few times. If you check their profiles you'll see it doesn't say staff anymore.

Maybe we will have some of this changes or things are just left like that and the work assigned to another -maybe global mods-

I really don't know how their payment works, but I am not addressing this aspect in the OP (although it is an interesting idea Smiley ). I was just suggesting to have a better reflection of the reality by updating the obsolete mods. However, if they are paid, I doubt that theymos would still pay Mike Hearn (for example) for moderating services, given the fact that he is not active since 2016. But not the payment is the issue in this case.

mods are getting paid for the work they do, right?
Yes they are, per month I believe, although I can't recall where I came across that;
Actual expenses (from my records): 225.9696519

Expenses breakdown:
- Hosting: 27.96617
- Forum improvement: 40
- BTC storage: 21.9
- Mod payments: 136.1034819

This doesn't include any income since the last mod payment, and there may be minor floating-point errors that I don't care to account for.

I also support updating the information on forum boards. Some users like to PM mods to know why certain actions were taking against them; like post deletion. And those messages could end up being sent to wrong and/or inactive profiles

- Development & Technical Discussion \ Wallet software \ Electrum: remove ThomasV from moderators list; although, according to tranthidung's topic List of the forum's admins/ global moderators/ staffs, Andreas Schildbach appears as having mod privileges, considering that he was last seen online on March 21st, 2019, most likely he is not moderating this section
- Development & Technical Discussion \ Wallet software \ BitcoinJ: remove Mike Hearn from moderators list; although, according to tranthidung's topic List of the forum's admins/ global moderators/ staffs, Andreas Schildbach appears as having mod privileges, considering that he was last seen online on March 29th, 2016, most likely he is not moderating this section
- Development & Technical Discussion \ Wallet software \ Mycelium: remove Rassah from moderators list; although, according to tranthidung's topic List of the forum's admins/ global moderators/ staffs, Andreas Schildbach appears as having mod privileges, considering that he was last seen online on February 9th, 2020, most likely he is not moderating this section

Might wanna fix that, they are not all Andreas Schildbach.

- Who better to be displayed as moderator for Electrum board than the guy who invented it aka ThomasV ? Even if he may not be active. At least for recognition if not anything else
- Who better to be displayed as moderator for Bitcoin Wallet for Android board than the guy who invented it aka Andreas Schildbach ? Even if he may not be active. At least for recognition if not anything else
- Who better to be displayed as moderator for BitcoinJ board than the guy who invented it aka Mike Hearn? Even if he may not be active. At least for recognition if not anything else. Also you think "most likely" Mike Hearn in not moderating that section ? Really ?
- Who better to be displayed as moderator for Mycelium board than the guy who invented it aka Rassah ? Even if he may not be active. At least for recognition if not anything else

PS none of them were mods. They are just shown there for users to see the dev. Might have lost some of it's usefulness over the years but IMO should remain for posterity.

Staff aren't paid a salary per se. If you don't handle any reports then you won't get paid anything. The more reports you handle the more you'll be paid, but it's capped at a certain amount depending on your moderator rank. There's no obligation for staff to handle any or even x amount of reports per month, but if you're inactive after a while theymos will usually remove them from staff. Sometimes he forgets to remove them from specific sub boards though hence why their names are still there, though for other mods if they're not active they certainly wont be getting paid anything.

But they are shown as moderator.

In my opinion should change the word "moderator" to "developer" if the purpose is to introduce them as developers.

Who else to put as a moderator in a Bitcoin forum other than one of its biggest opponents aka Mike Hearn? Good job with your suggestion. Roll Eyes

You don't have to like the guy (no really, you shouldn't !) but happened to develop BitcoinJ (among others). That's all I said.

I believe I read the same proposition on meta before 1-2 years and one of the answer was "recognition" as mentioned here too (will try to find it). I respect that but it is confusing to see them as moderator while they aren't.
A "recognition", special thanks" or "founder" depending from each situation would be better imo.

Yes, respect bad people from fooling you at first about their character? Do not give awards to bad people just because they contributed something at some point. Undecided

They are not moderators, but rather Mod-privileged
You have three Cryptios, and about 28 moderators. list of them https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5206428.0

MiningBuddy and jgarzik are not moderators

Go to https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=mlist;sa=search search by position add Staff and search

You are probably talking about the following topic.
Most of our moderators are inactive

And the following post by Welsh.

Mike hearn isn't a moderator either. He was likely given permissions there because hes the original author of BitcoinJ. Hes since quit Bitcoin, though. Shame, because he was one of the contributors to Bitcoin Core too.

Fixed, thanks!

- Who better to be displayed as moderator ~snip~

In order to reflect the reality, there should be no moderator displayed, as there is no moderator for these sections. As others suggested as well, these developers should be displayed as "developers", or with any other name, but not moderators. Some had mod privileges, although they were not moderators and some were real moderators, but moderating activity can't be done while being offline, can it?

Also you think "most likely" Mike Hearn in not moderating that section ? Really ?

Yes, I am absolute positive that someone who was last seen online 4 years, 2 months and 4 days ago is not moderating any section of the forum, unless he does it while being offline. Not sure if you were joking or serious though.

Who else to put as a moderator in a Bitcoin forum other than one of its biggest opponents aka Mike Hearn? Good job with your suggestion. Roll Eyes

Lol, that was a great addition!

My imagination was that they get paid weekly or monthly basis a fixed salary. I had no idea that things could work like this. Good to hear the information and it seems a win-win position for both sides :-D

My imagination was that they get paid weekly or monthly basis a fixed salary. I had no idea that things could work like this. Good to hear the information and it seems a win-win position for both sides :-D
As a general disclaimer, don't get it in your head that moderation is a good 'job' (similarly to signature campaigns). One should look at it like heightened volunteer work with a small financial incentive: you're not moderating for the money, you're doing it to clear the forum of spam.

Correct, it's a volunteer position first and foremost. Moderators also weren't paid anything at all before ~mid-2013.

I think this should be handled by theymos, at least let few changes be made in the forum where it is necessary. Since that dimension is not been handled by the respective Mods. Let them be replaced with other mods that are ready to do the job.
