that is an odd thing to say. i hope you know that all those who are selling a wallet file are trying to scam others, without exception. Do any of you have a real wallet.dat I can take a look at that I could download and open up ? Balance of 0 of course.
why don't you download any wallet and run it for the first time so that it creates a wallet file for you?

If this is for experiment only you can try to use the link below to download wallet.dat file You can find many from here. - https://www.4shared.com/web/q/#query=wallet.dat Just don't deposit on these wallets because you won't be able to recover them if someone still has access to these wallets.

It's a bit annoying to download different version of Bitcoin Core to obtain multiple version of wallet.dat with noticeable difference.
It really isn't... you simply go here: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/releasesGet the version(s) of Bitcoin Core that you want/need... there are even standalone versions that don't need to be "installed". Then simply run with a custom "datadir" and it will generate a new wallet.dat for you. As already mentioned, you don't need to download the blockchain at all... and you can very easily create whatever version wallet.dat's that you require if you want/need ones that were created by specific versions of Bitcoin Core. No need to look at shady websites or porn or deal with potentially dodgy file downloads.

why don't you download any wallet and run it for the first time so that it creates a wallet file for you? i thought this will (or is already?) change in the future, then when you start core, it will not generate a default wallet - i guess then you have to do it all by yourself

Let me suggest that it is NOT a good idea to download wallet.dat files on the internet, particularly if you are using Windows because the file could actually be named "wallet.dat.exe" with the extension hidden, containing bitcoin-stealing malware.
It is better if you download the Bitcoin Core software yourself, and run it in regtest mode like this: bitcoin-qt -regtest, this does not require you to download any blocks.

Are you sure this site is safe Don't download anything posted in this thread, especially the files posted by newbies. Lot's of shady links being posted here, even by members who should know better. Since you want to play around with "wallet.dat" files, I'm assuming you're talking about the wallet files generated by Bitcoin Core. The best way to learn about bitcoin, bitcoin core, and wallet.dat files is to run your own node on Testnet. The testnet blockchain isn't very big, won't take too long to synchronize, and you can do anything with it that you can do on mainnet.
i suggest not using windows...
I suggest learning how to keep your computer safe regardless of which operating system you use. All OSs vulnerable, and even more so if you're unfamiliar with it.

You need to remember that saying things like "Don't use Windows" does not work for a vast majority of people who have neither the time, nor inclination to learn the inner workings of Linux etc...
Linux has certainly come a long way from the old days of slackware and compiling your own kernels etc... but it still has some quirks that can be particularly frustrating for folks for whom the commandline is just a big black window of doom.
Direworlf's advice is on point... regardless of the OS chosen, you need to learn how to keep it safe... Linux can be just as "poor" as Windows if it isn't used/configured properly.
Blindly thinking that "I downloaded and installed this Linux distro, so now I must be impervious to all cyber threats" is a hazardous attitude.

just because it doesn't work for most of the people doesn't make it wrong, windows sucks big times Linux has certainly come a long way from the old days of slackware and compiling your own kernels etc... but it still has some quirks that can be particularly frustrating for folks for whom the commandline is just a big black window of doom.
it's interesting that you think i use linux just because i say that you should not use windows Direworlf's advice is on point... regardless of the OS chosen, you need to learn how to keep it safe... Linux can be just as "poor" as Windows if it isn't used/configured properly.
i agree with you that you should do the best with what you have and it is of course better to inform yourself how to keep bitcoin safe, no matter the operating system. but i think it is important to mention that windows is one of the worst operating systems out there and if you somehow can make the switch you would win a lot. by giving up what? microsoft word? or the gaming over steam? of course you can still fuck up, i never said that not using windows is a silver bullet Blindly thinking that "I downloaded and installed this Linux distro, so now I must be impervious to all cyber threats" is a hazardous attitude.
who thinks that? i agree that is the wrong attitude

~ All OSs are vulnerable to malware and phishing attacks. The only way to avoid being victimized is to educate yourself, and be diligent. The OS you choose will not save you from mistakes. I've been using computers since Commodore 64s were all the rage. I used Apple IIs and the first generation of Macs when I was in junior high and high school. My first version of Windows was 3.2, and I've used every version since, including enterprise versions and some server versions. Currently I use Ubuntu for a variety of tasks, and most of my servers run a version of Linux. My daughters prefer Macs, so I've had a couple of those around the house for the last decade as well. Those of us who have industrial engineering jobs, those of use who use CAD to earn our living, those of us who must interact with other people around the planet who use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the like... How hard would we be making our lives trying contribute while using some buggy shitware? All the best quality and most practical business and industrial software is written for Windows, and only Windows. So yes, my main personal computer is built to run Windows, and that's the only way I'll have it. Not because I don't know what else is out there or because I don't know how to use anything else. It's because I like it, it works great for my needs, and it's been quite safe when I do my part. When I say that I find Windows to be among the most versatile, useful, and dependable OSs of all that I've used, it does come from a place of experience. So, you'll have to forgive me for not taking the advice of some newbie on an internet forum when he says things like "i suggest not using windows."

He might be some newbie on an internet forum but he is not completely wrong. Windows is one big piece of spyware. Together with all the known and unknown vulnerabilities at any given time, the risk of getting compromised with a windows system is higher than getting compromised using a mac or unix system. Malware does exist for every OS, yes. And if you just double-click every downloaded file, it won't matter much, yes. However, if you are ready to learn something about your OS, using anything else than Windows does indeed increase the security and privacy more efficiently.

Please DO NOT download anything that you're unsure of. People often intentionally dangle these kinds of files as a bait. I would avoid downloading them at all costs, even if you're not going to execute them. I'm not sure why people would recommend doing so, you literally can generate one by downloading Bitcoin Core. You don't even need to synchronize it. who thinks that? i agree that is the wrong attitude
I find it quite common, given how people almost always take the advice of "don't use Windows" at it's face value. Your security depends far more on your habits rather than the OS. All OSs are vulnerable to malware and phishing attacks. The only way to avoid being victimized is to educate yourself, and be diligent. The OS you choose will not save you from mistakes.
Exactly and I can't emphasize it enough. People seem to think that there are no vulnerabilities associated with Linux based distributions. That is completely and utterly wrong. Zero day vulnerabilities has been exploited from time to time; Shellshock on Unix based systems with bash, a whole bunch of distribution specific backdoors as well. The main reason why WannaCry was such a big problem was because it was patched previously but people were either unwilling to update or still using EOL OSes. The most common is still users willingly running it themselves. I don't disagree that Linux is better than Windows in some aspect but Windows is designed to be KISS and not over complicate certain things. From time to time, you'll see users coming on the forum to seek advice on running certain things on Linux. It is quite obvious that some didn't do their due diligence and are instead relying on websites to teach them how to compile Core, for example without knowing how to resolve simple issues; not having correct Path variables, not having updated dependencies, etc. It's okay if you want to learn how to use Linux, but if you aren't prepared to read up on it in depth and practice simple security habits, then you're just shooting yourself in the foot.

Windows is one big piece of spyware. Spyware schmyware! Are you not aware that you can set up Windows with a local account, and provide no personal information? Okay, so Windows is not open-source, but if you're personal information is also "closed-source," spyware problem solved. If your privacy is a significant concern you're probably already using Tor or VPN for IP masking. Unencrypted data you transfer through the internet is more likely to divulge personal details than anything I'm likely to save on OneDrive, and a warrant isn't required. Together with all the known and unknown vulnerabilities at any given time, the risk of getting compromised with a windows system is higher than getting compromised using a mac or unix system. Of course there's more risk to Windows than other systems, because hackers want results. If everyone took your advice and started using Linux, do you think that hackers would continue to only target Windows? Hacking a Windows box, or writing malware to attack Windows isn't any easier than it would be for other systems. In fact, with all the closed-source anti-malware features built into Windows these days, I would reckon it's harder. It makes perfect sense that hackers would target the most commonly used operating system just because it's the most commonly used operating system, regardless of difficulty.
It's perfectly fine to not like Windows because Bill Gates, NSA, ABC, XYZ... but, it's disingenuous to promote this theory that if you don't use Windows somehow your privacy is magically protected, and you're invulnerable to being hacked. That's far from the truth. If you don't know how to keep your data private or your computer safe, no OS will protect you. Educating yourself, your family, and your colleagues is the only safe course of action, and promoting any alternate theory is dangerous.

Your security depends far more on your habits rather than the OS. you should that take at it's face value IMO, i agree that your habits are a big part of your overall security, that doesn't make windows a great os I don't disagree that Linux is better than Windows in some aspect but Windows is designed to be KISS and not over complicate certain things.
that is the most hilarious thing i've read in a long time.... windows is a "business" operating system, they have to be compatible with software from ages ago and that means they can't get rid of some very old codebase because of their licenses or contracts with governments or businesses, sure that is getting better, but no, just no sure you probably mean it is kiss for the enduser, but even that is something i completely disagree, apple products are more userfriendly than any windows system will ever be (okay i don't know the future, but it is highly unlikely)but in the end i agree with you guys on some parts, don't download stuff you don't know, your habits are part of your security, but your os is also part of your security and i really believe that people should not use windows - if something is bad, don't recommend it because it is convenient or a "everybody does it, it can't be bad..." It's perfectly fine to not like Windows because Bill Gates, NSA, ABC, XYZ... but, it's disingenuous to promote this theory that if you don't use Windows somehow your privacy is magically protected, and you're invulnerable to being hacked.
