Hi guys, I have some bitcoin in an old wallet file of mine. I still have access to the file, however it is password protected and I have been trying endlessly to find a way to start brute force attempts at this file. I have stumbled across hashcat and saw that in 2018 it added the ability to brute force electrum passwords. I'm wondering if any of you can help me get this set up and running on my home PC so that hopefully I can get into this wallet eventually. Thanks.

Yes, it is possible. Depending on your version of Elecrum, possible modes are:
-m 16600  - salt 1-3
-m 21700  - salt 4
-m 21800  - salt 5

Download project https://github.com/magnumripper/JohnTheRipper
there you will find script run/electrum2john:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/magnumripper/JohnTheRipper/bleeding-jumbo/run/electrum2john.py

if you launch this with your wallet, you will receive hash which looks like
$electrum$2*0000000 - so it is salt type 2.
and depending on type of salt you launch hashcat with a proper mode.
Good luck!

Perhaps this video would help you, How to bruite force bitcoin wallet. As far as I know that person have good knowledge about it, but it is only learning purpose, I haven't tried it myself. You may learn from video and get details from mentioned by @math09183.

By the way, even you hadn't save your seed? Or private keys from your wallet? Remember, don't forgot to backup your wallet file and don't share it with any third party. Perhaps some scammers would send PM to you for recover your funds. If its happen just share with us so we can see if the person is trusted. Don't lose your fund with scammers. Be careful and try yourself only and download any kind of script from trusted source only.

LottoBTCorg, if you fail to do it yourself, there is one good and legitimate service that has helped many in similar situations. Of course, it is quite logical that you first try to do something yourself, but if you fail, save your nerves and time. As far as I know the fee for this service was 20% which is quite decent and not too expensive.

No. Definitely a no.

OP, do not trust any random "recovery services".
A lot of them are either a scam or really bad.

There is only one reputable and trusted wallet recovery service.
And that's Dave's recovery service: https://www.walletrecoveryservices.com/

Do not use any other service.

My fault, I definitely meant the service that bob123 is posted as only which has proven to be legitimate and fair to its users. I will edit and remove the link from the previous post so that someone would not fall victim to a possible scam.
