Inspired by Ethereum, Tezos can soon support domain names and addresses that humans can read thanks to a new proposal from the blockchain community.
How does Tezos domain work? Tezos Domains project leader Miroslav Bodeček posted an introductory article this week explaining the project's goals. As Tezos Domains noted, standard blockchain addresses are an "obstacle to adopting XTZ as an actual currency" because they are not easy to read, memorize or communicate. The blockchain name service solves this problem by attaching a human-readable wallet address to a standard address.
For example, a user could replace an address like tz1VSU ... jcjb with an address like Alice.tez after the Tezos domain name was introduced. The simpler name makes it much easier for users to send and receive XTZ tokens. Developers can also attach domain names to their smart contracts, making it easy for DApps to discover and interact with them. Some other details
Bodeček noted that this proposal is still an initial draft. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this feature will come with XTZ, and if it does, it may change significantly during this time.
However, a number of plans have been put in place: the project plans to sell the domain name through an "open auction," in which the tender is open and each bid must be larger than the last. Expired domain names will then be sold on a first come, first served basis.
The team also plans to prevent phishing attacks: The name Tezos initially supported a limited character set that would exclude characters that look alike. Extended Unicode support may come at a later time. In the immediate future, the team will begin implementing smart contracts to coordinate services, lightweight indexers and browser applications that allow name lookups.
Other blockchain domain services Some other blockchains also have their own domain service. Notably another one has been built for Namecoin, Zilliqa and NEO. Ethereum also supports other name services, such as Unstoppable Domains.
While blockchain domains are challenging to make, they are an important step when it comes to being easy to use, on par with email addresses or website domains in general.
How do you think about development of Tezos ?
