Mining crypto on TV

There are some powerful Android TV devices that allows anyone to play graphically-demanding games with ease. For instance, the Nvidia Shield TV goes easy on heavy resource apps, as well as, high-end games. Such a powerful little device could make the perfect "miner" for crypto. Now, I'm starting to wonder how to do this, since mining options on Android are very limited (AFAIK). Coins that can be mined with GPUs like Zcash and Ethereum could be efficiently mined with the Nvidia Shield TV if there was a way to do it.

If it's possible to mine crypto on TV using said device, I'd like to know what hashrate I'd expect from it? If anyone has tried doing this before, I'd appreciate some advice, tips, or recommendations. Thanks in advance

I think this coin is CPU friendly, I visited the site and planning to mine some verus coins soon.

You aren't going to get any good hash rates from Android TVs because their processing powers is the same with many high end Android smartphones, from quad core CPU to octa or hexa cores, nothing more

And there is no good miners for Android that can mine Zcash or Ethereum at incredible speed, smartphones counterparts can't handle the power of mining coins yet, maybe this will be possible in future

I too use a RK3399 based RockPi. It's a ARM chip commonly used in set-top boxes.

In order to mine it does have to run 64-bit linux. Mine runs Ubuntu 18.04 LTS server (+ Mint GUI for demonstration of the Verus-Desktop GUI wallet). Mining on 6 cores (4x A53 + 2x A72) it does about 2.5-3.0 MHs on Verushash 2.2 at 9 Watts indeed.

It may not be a huge hashrate, but's above average on MH/W


Mining on an Android TV is a unknown to me. Lots of different processors used and very little Android miners available.

Those are impressive results. Earning $4 a day by spending little on energy, is a win-win situation. I'd want to mine crypto using the Nvidia Shield TV's GPU, but it seems that it's impossible to do so. Among the mining apps I've stumbled, there are none which allow you to mine ETH or ZEC-based cryptocurrencies. PoW algorithms like Equihash, or Ethash would've been great to mine with a GPU on Android TV devices. And since the Nvidia Shield TV is the most powerful Android TV device yet, it could make you some decent profit by mining ZEC or even ETH.

Nonetheless, I'll give Veruscoin a try using the ARM CPU of the Nvidia Shield TV. I also have some old android phones lying around, which could help me get bigger gains. If interest/demand in crypto continues to grow, we might be able to even mine crypto on our TV game consoles like the PlayStation and Xbox. It would be a blast to play your favorite games on TV while getting paid in crypto (mining on the background).

I believe that if you mine on a TV, that TV has to be running, i.e. keeping the screen on. That would mean a waste of energy and that could make this kind of mining unprofitable.
Or you are thinking on infecting others' TVs to mine for you?

I have the same feeling about these ARM CPUs: they are designed for low amount use, not 24/7, so they may make more heat than hashes. I remember how my older phones did behave as GPS while also charging them. Keep your eyes open and try to not burn down the house.

Of course, I'm also curious on real and proper long-term stats on mining on old phones.

Well, not exactly. One could run the mining device in "headless mode" without ever having to leave the screen turned on 24/7. In terms of graphics processing power, the Nvidia Shield TV packs a punch compared to other Android TVs on the market. My guess is that this "little" device will be able to mine Equihash or Ethash-based cryptocurrencies with ease. The only problem is that there are no mining apps that would take advantage of these GPU-oriented PoW algorithms. So far, I'm only limited with the ARM CPU which is not that very powerful compared to the traditional x86 and x64 CPUs on laptops and desktop PCs. Old phones could be put to good use, although I won't be earning that much with them.

Nonetheless, I think I'll "stick" with dedicated hardware in the meantime to mine cryptocurrencies at home. It would've been nice to do so with a TV, especially at your friend's house, but this is not feasible right now. Maybe in the future, gaming consoles like the PlayStation 5, Xbox One, or the Nintendo Switch will be able to mine cryptocurrencies on TV. If there's demand/interest for something like this, developers will make it a reality. But I guess that there are far more important things to focus, besides this. Just my opinion
