Good luck with it. I've been looking at it as a hobiest and have found what works the easiest for final products starts by going over Icharus mining. It may sound ' dumb ' to people to start with reviewing what worked, and it might, and it is a good starting spot for an already accepted set of connections/commands. The final hardware will need some connection to the net, if it's through a pc like an Antminer or Erupter, there will be the need of some simple usb/uart IC that will actually send the info to and from the ASIC and report to the mining program. The standard for this is already established and being used by quite a few different products and some of the coding is open source so getting and making a profit on it means making them and selling.
The other option is the stand alone unit that will actually use a mining program or potentially a version or derivitive of minepeon. The hosting device will act both as USB host and TCP/IP connection to a mining pool. In this methodology, you do not have to alter much that a USB device would need other than dedicated control lines, central power, and potentially a display to show it's working and at what rate. The Beagle Board with an FPGA is a good example of what I'm refering to as an outline of the system. Obviously there will be more components, and you would not want just one ASIC representing 4 or more Icharus cores per stand alone unit.
I wish you good fortune with this and when you get to the point of manufacture, I would be willing to test and evaluate units for SHA or Script mining.
