American here. I probably won't even vote honestly. Its unfortunate to say, but I really don't feel like any of the candidates appeal to me. Biden / Jo doesn't really feel like they would entice me to vote as a voter, and trump is well...trump lol

@friends1980 I don’t think that any American is seriously considering voting for them because they’re not in the limelight, and it’s a direct battle between Trump and Biden. @Fallenkeith75 instead of choosing not to vote I would rather suggest you to go out and vote for NOTA, as it’ll send a clear message to the politicians that they need to do better work if they wish to earn people votes.

Not really possible for a 3rd party to rise in the US due to the nature of US elections. Pretty much all elections in the US work as follows: If you win even one more vote then the other candidate, you win and they get nothing (for Presidential elections this one vote would be in the EC instead of pop vote like for everything else.

if we had a different system of voting, yes this would be pretty different. A different system could be something along the lines of proportional representation and multi member districts. If you win a certain amount of the votes in a particular area, you'll get a certain number of the allocated represenatatives.

Ranked voting as well -- As this allows you to vote for more then one candidate, your vote would still go to the next candidate if the lowest is removed.

It is indeed not easy at all, except for when you have an extremely well organized party, but without radio and TV chains, I can imagine it's hard to get a foot on the ground in US politics. In the UK, the classical 2 party system has been turned over however, so it is not impossible though (although indeed, their voting system is still different from the US's).

It's not private tyranny that Libertarians want. Rather, it is privacy, with true justice for privacy infringement.

Right now, if you are injured by someone, the court system takes your attempt to get justice out of your hands. They give it to a judge and two supposedly opposing attorneys. Often the so-called justice is merely a slap on the wrist of the guilty party, and barely any repayment for the injury at all.

Generally, libertarians don't want all kinds of laws. Rather, they want repeals of laws, and recognition that the laws don't change anything, anyway. We are seeing this right now with all the BLM and Antifa stuff. Laws do nothing... except allow for police brutality.

Libertarians want freedom, privacy, and the right to justice. Most libertarians don't even want the Libertarian Party to exist. They are afraid that their own Party might infringe on their rights, or the rights of others.

Even a well organized party is going to have a hard time. The only thing that the two major parties are going to agree on EVERY SINGLE TIME is that they want to be in control. They're willing to 'share' the power between one another to ensure that another party doesn't rise up. Making sure another party stays irrelevant is pretty easy when you're the ones writing the elections laws.

They ensure that only the 2 major parties are relevant by doing the following:

1. Making it hard to get onto the ballot

2. Absorbing the ideas of smaller parties

3. Running mass PR campaigns convincing people that voting for the 3rd party isn't worth it -- and while this may be true at certain points -- people are conditioned to just disregard a 3rd party even if the ideas behind them are popular / good.

4. Gerrymandering Districts

I never understand how in USA they have only 2 parties for a century and more. That sounds to me half way to totalitarianism. Those two parties are simply so strong that dont let anyone get even close to them. Non republican or Democrat senators were extremely rare in last century. Insanely rare. I dont understand how people simply dont get at least bored of them if not see through  their corruption.

Big advertising, done by billionaire companies and people, to keep it this way. Why would they want it this way? There is modeling that shows that a two-party system can be regulated/manipulated to producing almost even votes on both sides.

People see the votes, and they think that it is a close call. But they forget that the vote that counts is that of the Electoral College.

As I've said in OP, I was especially eager to hear how the LP is perceived in the US. How do they campaign? How are their supporters? In which states are they (the most) active? Are they visible? Maybe it's still too early in the campaign? Etc.

If, like me, you're not an American, your perception is limited to what you can find or read online or watch on Youtube, and so on.

Although interesting, it was never my intention to start just another discussion about general politics, libertarianism or the two-party system. A lot has been and will be written about these topics, in the past and in the future, on these boards, and elsewhere, so allow me to propose to keep the current thread strictly on-topic
