Ignacio Rubio Menendez, a compliance expert and lawyer specializing in business law, completed the process of registering the "Name and Logo" of Bitcoin in Spanish Patent and Trademark Office.

Compliance with government documents is very clever way of securing business interest as customers 100% safe working security and feeling away from frauds or scams are protected.

The catalyst is very helpful especially on the ecosystem and network of Bitcoin in general and perhaps to more emerging businesses (normally local exchanges).

Alongside this catalyst is the idea behind the compliance and initiative of one person to do business in crypto industry without compromising the risk on the part of the users/customers.

On the other hand, he said "I am not a fake Satoshi", which means he denied that he was Satoshi. "I have just registered the ownership and legitimate use of the logo and the word", he said. "If someone uses it incorrectly, I will defend it", he added...Which is correct knowing that there are many scam websites and fraudulent activities online; out there or even right now.

Thus, Mr.Menendez objective is to protect not only his business  but in such case, someone misused the Name and Logo of bitcoin; he can sue and have claims on it. Very clever one...

Surely not a clever one for me.

Anybody who is sane enough and a real follower or fan or advocate of Bitcoin wouldn't do this. Hell, anybody who knows the basic philosophy of Bitcoin would think it is unbelievably stupid for any entity to try to own either the logo or the word.

There were already several failed attempts to trademark the word Bitcoin in the US, UK, Russia, and other countries in the past. But there was one which somehow made it in the UK.[1]

There was actually one clothing merchant selling a few shirts with the word Bitcoin on them that was issued a cease and desist order in accordance with that trademark.[2]

Though earlier thought to be impossible due to the word Bitcoin being too generic to own and that it is a public name and therefore not an intellectual property of anybody, mind-boggling decisions such as this one still happens.

Surely not a clever one for me.

Very clever I'd say. It's basically saying that he doesn't really care about the principle of Bitcoin and what he only cares about is the profit that he is getting by using Bitcon's name and logo. He will have control over there if someone tried to use Bitcoin's name or logo for businesses purposes. Though he might make profit out of this, he'll become an enemy of the community if he tried something unjust.

Might get him some success initially, but in the end, yeah, it'll all just backfire on him if he wants to take it big. People wise up and they'll know eventually what he tried to pull off. Bet you if he has a Twitter or other socmed account, he'll already be getting some "love" from all those lovable people out there.

That's... dumb.

"I am not a fake Satoshi, I have just registered the ownership and legitimate use of the logo and the word. If someone uses it incorrectly, I will defend it."

Because we all know that scammers abide by trademark law Roll Eyes

If anything that will make it harder for legit crypto business ventures to take a foothold in Spain.

On a side note they only got class 35 (Advertising, Business and Retail Services) -- so I guess if they are indeed "a bitcoin salesman", which could be seen as financial service, one could still file a trademark for class 36 (Insurance and Financial Services) just to fuck with that guy.

Nonetheless how this trademark got through in the first place is a complete mystery to me.

This is how upside down the world is and how much of an arse hole this guy is: you create something amazing and a decade later people try claiming ownership and legitimate use of your invention as if it was always theirs.

But at the end of the day, all you have is a claim you can laugh at people with while, at the same time, you can't do much at all with it. If one such attempt ever gets to claim ownership over Bitcoin's name for all cases & domains, good luck claiming ownership over everything that has Bitcoin in it without becoming the enemy for literally millions of people.

@HeRetiK agreed. Dumb move.

umm there is "bitcoin" name but there is no such thing as a bitcoin logo since bitcoin is not a company to have an official logo. different wallets used different designs by a graphic designer that holds the rights to their design or have published them on public domain which means nobody can claim ownership of them as a trademark or something like that!

There is a FOMO brewing...

In this concrete case they trademarked one of the most commonly used logos:
https://www.tmdn.org/tmview/#/tmview/detail/ES500000004046141

Or as Wikipedia puts it, the "prevailing Bitcoin logo".

No idea how in the living hell they managed to trademark a public domain logo though.

For reference, here's the archived thread with bitboy releasing the above into the public domain in 2010:
https://web.archive.org/web/20131213113233/https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=1756.0

(The thread can still be found on bitcointalk as well, but the image links are dead by now)
